The best way from Hanoi to Cao Bang is a daytime limousine van: about 5 to 6 hours, door to door in the center of both cities, for 370,000 to 420,000 VND. Night sleepers cost about the same and save a hotel night, but they arrive before dawn after hours on mountain roads in the dark. A private car only makes sense for a group. Ban Gioc waterfall is a further 2 hours east of Cao Bang city, so most people break the trip there or ride the Cao Bang loop.

How we built this guide: on 3 October 2026 we checked Vexere's route pages for Cao Bang and Trung Khanh (both updated that day), listings on 12Go for Wednesday 14 October 2026 and on Baolau for Friday 9 October, Vietnam Coracle's February 2025 Ban Gioc guide, Vietnam's tourism board, 2026 press reports on the new expressway and the UK government's travel advice. We did not make the trip for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 3 October 2026. Where a site showed dollars, the VND figure is our conversion.

Plan on 5 to 6 hours by van, 7 to 9 by sleeper bus and 5 to 6 by car. Vexere listed about 70 departures a day from 16 operators, between 05:00 and 21:35, with an average trip of 7.1 hours over 241 km and an average fare of 315,000 VND.

Limousine vans: about 5 to 6 hours

Vans are the quickest scheduled option, and most pick up in central Hanoi. Examples on Vexere for October 2026:

  • Duy Quang Limousine: hourly from 05:00 to 14:00 from its office in the Sai Dong area, timed at 5 hours, 420,000 VND.
  • Trung Khanh Limousine: ten morning and midday departures from 05:30, from the Hanoi Opera House or Noi Bai airport, timed at about 6 hours, 370,000 VND.
  • Tuan Anh Travel and Lam Hieu Limousine: from the Opera House area, timed at 5 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 40 minutes, 378,000 to 400,000 VND.
  • Thuan An Travel: six departures from Minh Khai street, timed at 6 hours, 370,000 VND.

On 12Go for 14 October, 249 van trips started at 360,000 VND, and Trung Khanh Limousine's 10:10, 12:10 and 14:10 departures from the Opera House were timed at 5 hours 30 minutes for about 452,000 VND after a discount. On Baolau, Duc Duong Bus's seven-seat vans left Hoan Kiem at 06:00, 12:00 and 15:00, timed at 6 hours, for 580,000 VND.

Sleeper and cabin buses: about 7 to 9 hours

Big sleepers mostly leave My Dinh bus station in the evening. On Vexere, Thanh Ly's 24-cabin bus leaves at 21:30 from bays 33 or 38 for 450,000 VND, timed at 7 hours. Hiep Giang runs at 10:10, 20:20, 20:50 and 21:35 from My Dinh or Giap Bat for 350,000 VND, or 450,000 VND for a double berth. Vinh Dung leaves at 20:30 and 21:00, and Bon Hai at 20:00, both for 350,000 VND. By day, Thanh Phong's 11:30 sleeper costs 280,000 VND and Cao Bang Express's 10:20 seat bus is the cheapest at 180,000 VND.

12Go showed night sleepers arriving at 04:30 to 05:00 and Baolau a Thanh Ly bus arriving at 05:45. Both sites charged more than Vexere for the same buses: 12Go listed Thanh Ly's cabin at 875,000 VND.

Private car: about 5 to 6 hours

12Go's 12 car listings cost about 3 to 4.7 million VND per vehicle, the fastest timed at 5 hours. One SUV for four went all the way to Ban Gioc in 5 hours 40 minutes for about 3.59 million VND. Baolau listed a private transfer at 5,500,000 VND (about $210), timed at 7 hours.

Which road do buses take, and is the new expressway open?

Most traffic still uses National Road 3, the old main road north; Cao Bang city sits on it about 270 km from Hanoi, per Wikipedia. Distances on booking sites range from Vexere's 241 km to Baolau's 282 km, and Vietnam's tourism board allows around eight hours depending on transport (vietnam.travel).

A second route is coming through Lang Son. The Dong Dang to Tra Linh expressway is 121 km in all, and 85 km of its 93 km first phase was technically connected in February 2026, with a completion target of 30 April (Bao Bac Ninh). In April VnExpress reported that a 62 km section from Dong Dang to Dong Khe was due for technical opening by 19 May, while soaring fuel costs threatened the rest. We could not confirm whether any bus company uses it yet, so plan with the timings above.

Should you travel overnight or by day?

By day, if your schedule allows. Night sleepers reach Cao Bang around 04:30 to 05:45, and the UK government warns that night bus drivers may become tired but keep driving, sometimes with fatal results. Mountain roads in the north also suffer landslides in the rainy season: on 9 September 2024, during Typhoon Yagi, a landslide and flash flood swept a passenger bus off a road in the Nguyen Binh area of Cao Bang, leaving more than 30 people dead or missing, DTiNews reported.

If you do take a night bus, choose a cabin sleeper, keep your passport and phone on you, and ask your hotel about early check-in.

Where do buses leave from and arrive?

Vans pick up in central Hanoi, while big sleepers use the bus stations; in Cao Bang they finish at offices, hotels and the bus station.

  • Central Hanoi: Trung Khanh Limousine, Tuan Anh Travel and Lam Hieu Limousine use the Opera House area on Trang Tien street, per Vexere.
  • Noi Bai airport: Trung Khanh Limousine lists a pickup at the domestic terminal, floor 2, hall A, by pillar 9.
  • Bus stations: sleepers leave My Dinh in the west, and some use Giap Bat or Gia Lam.
  • In Cao Bang: vans drop at hotels in the city center, and sleepers finish at the interprovincial bus station or company offices, one beside the Bang Giang bridge.

How do you get from Cao Bang city to Ban Gioc waterfall?

By van, local bus, motorbike or car with driver; allow about 2 hours. Vietnam Coracle puts the falls 83 km east of Cao Bang city, about 1.5 to 2 hours by road, with local buses several times a day, motorbike rental at around 200,000 VND a day and a car with driver at $80 to $100 a day. On 12Go for 14 October, vans left Cao Bang bus station at 07:00, 09:00 and 17:00, taking 2 hours for 248,000 VND (about $9.50) to a homestay near the falls.

To skip Cao Bang city, two night sleepers run straight to Trung Khanh and Ban Gioc, per Vexere: Hanh Quang from Gia Lam bus station at 17:30 for 350,000 VND, and Vinh Dung from My Dinh at 20:30 for 400,000 VND.

Tip: Since the falls area has few services, carry enough cash for entry, rafts and your homestay, and sort out your onward ride before you leave Cao Bang city.

When is the best time to go?

September to November, when the falls still run strong and the roads are drier. From June to September the rains bring the fullest falls but also the highest landslide risk. Around Lunar New Year, buses fill early; see our Tet 2027 guide.

Going the other way: Cao Bang to Hanoi

The same vans and sleepers run back to Hanoi, with day vans in the morning and sleepers in the evening. Book the return when you book the outbound trip, especially for weekends, and leave a wide gap if you fly out of Noi Bai the same day. For more trips from the capital, see Starting from Hanoi, the Hanoi to Ha Giang route for the other big northern loop, and our bus companies compared.

Limitations

These figures are a snapshot of listings checked on 3 October 2026 for trips in early and mid October, and they will move around weekends and holidays. Vexere's trip times are its own averages and operator estimates; real times depend on traffic and roadworks. Distances differ between sources, and we could not confirm whether any buses use the new expressway. Resellers such as 12Go and Baolau charged more than Vexere for the same buses. Mountain roads close after heavy rain, so check the forecast and your operator before you set off.
