Ho Chi Minh City is easier than it looks once you pick the right base. Stay in or near the old District 1, give the city two to three days, ride the new metro where it fits, and save a separate day for the Cu Chi tunnels or the Mekong Delta. Expect to see two sets of place names, because the city replaced its districts with wards in July 2025.
How we built this guide: on 2 October 2026 we checked the Independence Palace's official ticket page, published metro fares, Grab's airport ride page, 2025 and 2026 reports from Tuoi Tre, VOH, VnExpress, VTV and Vietcetera on the metro, airports, ward changes, museums and the Cu Chi tunnels, Vietnam's national tourism site, UK travel advice and published cost data. We did not visit the city for this update.
How does Ho Chi Minh City work for a first-time visitor?
Ho Chi Minh City, still called Saigon by many locals, is a huge city with a compact visitor core. Since 1 July 2025 it has also absorbed Binh Duong and Ba Ria Vung Tau provinces, and it now covers more than 6,700 square kilometers with over 14 million residents (VnEconomy). For a short trip you will spend most of your time in a few square kilometers around the Saigon River waterfront, the Central Post Office and the Ben Thanh market area.
The same reform abolished the district level of government. The city now has 168 commune-level units, and familiar names like District 1 and District 3 no longer exist on paper, as Vietcetera explains. You will already see the new names on official addresses: the Independence Palace now lists itself in Ben Thanh Ward, and the War Remnants Museum in Xuan Hoa Ward.
| Old name you will still hear | New wards since 1 July 2025 |
|---|---|
| District 1 | Saigon, Ben Thanh, Tan Dinh and Cau Ong Lanh wards |
| District 3 | Ban Co, Xuan Hoa and Nhieu Loc wards |
| Thao Dien (old District 2, Thu Duc) | Part of An Khanh ward |
Vietcetera notes that many hotels and guides still use the old district names, so search for both when you book, and give drivers a street address or a pinned location rather than a district.
How many days should you spend in Ho Chi Minh City?
Two to three days in the city is enough for most first visits, plus one day for each trip out. The national tourism site frames its own suggestion as a weekend in the city.
- Day one: the Central Post Office, the Independence Palace and the War Remnants Museum, then street food in the evening.
- Day two: the Cu Chi tunnels, out early and back by mid-afternoon.
- Day three: Cho Lon and its pagodas, a metro ride to Thao Dien, or a slow day of cafes and markets.
- Day four (optional): the Mekong Delta, or the start of an overnight trip to Can Tho.
Where should you stay in Ho Chi Minh City?
Stay in the old District 1 for your first visit, and move to District 3 or Thao Dien if you want calmer nights or a longer stay.
| Area | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Old District 1 (Saigon and Ben Thanh wards) | First visits, walking to the main sights, the Ben Thanh and Opera House metro stations, nightlife | The noisiest and most expensive area, with heavy traffic |
| Old District 3 (Xuan Hoa, Ban Co and Nhieu Loc wards) | Local food, calmer streets, the War Remnants Museum | A ride to the riverfront, and no metro station |
| Thao Dien (An Khanh ward) | Longer stays, cafes, the river, a metro station of its own | Across the river from the center, so most sightseeing needs a ride |
Budget Your Trip's Kayak-based averages put a hotel room at about US$29 (750,000 VND) in the low season and US$54 (1,400,000 VND) at peak, with a typical range from US$15 to US$131. Compare live prices for your dates.
What is worth your time in Ho Chi Minh City?
The city's best sights tell the story of the 20th century, and they are close together and cheap.
The Central Post Office and Notre Dame Cathedral
The Central Post Office is still a working post office, so you can walk in and look up at the hall during opening hours. Next door, Notre Dame Cathedral is still behind restoration works. Its towers got new gold-plated crosses on 19 March 2026, replacing ones removed for corrosion in June 2023, and the parish said no completion date has been projected (Tuoi Tre).
The Independence Palace
The palace and its exhibition house cost 80,000 VND for adults, 40,000 VND for students and seniors, and 20,000 VND for children aged 6 to 17. It opens daily from 7am to 6pm, with gates on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia and Nguyen Du streets.
The War Remnants Museum
This is the city's most affecting museum, and it is worth reading up before you go. Entry is 40,000 VND, students get half price and children under 6 enter free, and it opens daily from 7:30am to 5:30pm. Since February 2026 you can buy tickets online and enter with a QR code (Tuoi Tre).
The Cu Chi tunnels
The tunnels are a full morning or day out, about 70 km northwest of the center according to VnExpress. Its July 2026 guide lists entry at 35,000 VND for Vietnamese and 85,000 VND for international visitors, describes about 250 km of tunnels on three levels between 3 and 12 m deep, and mentions public bus 13 toward the Cu Chi area or a taxi at around 500,000 VND a trip. The two visitor areas are Ben Dinh and Ben Duoc. Tour prices vary, so check whether yours includes the entry fee.
The Mekong Delta
A day trip from the city shows you the river and the orchards, and an overnight in Can Tho lets you start on the water at dawn. Our Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho guide covers the buses and transfers.
How do you get to Ho Chi Minh City?
Most visitors fly into Tan Son Nhat, which sits inside the city. International flights use Terminal 2, and Terminal 3 opened on 17 April 2025 for Vietnam Airlines' domestic flights, with most of them moved there by the end of that month (The Investor). Check your terminal before you go to the airport.
The new Long Thanh airport, east of the city in Dong Nai, is not yet in regular use. The airports operator ACV planned to start commercial operations on 1 December 2026, with international flights by Vietnamese carriers, new international routes, charters and cargo moving first, until 27 March 2027 (VOH). Check which airport your ticket names.
By land, the city is the southern end of the railway and the hub for southern buses. See Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat and the Starting from Ho Chi Minh City hub.
How do you get around Ho Chi Minh City?
Use ride-hailing for most trips and the metro where it fits. From the airport, Grab puts the center about 7 km away, 25 to 40 minutes by car, at 120,000 to 200,000 VND. Bus 109 now runs from Terminal 3 to the Saigon bus station for 8,000 to 15,000 VND, every 15 to 25 minutes, taking about 45 minutes (VOH).
Metro Line 1 opened on 22 December 2024 (VTV). It runs 19.7 km from Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien with 14 stations, and only the first three, Ben Thanh, Opera House and Ba Son, are underground (Wikipedia). Trains run from 5am to 10pm on weekdays and until 11pm on weekends and public holidays, and you can pay by bank card or QR e-wallet as well as cash (Tuoi Tre). For visitors, the most useful stretch is Ben Thanh to Thao Dien.
| Metro ticket | Price | About US$ |
|---|---|---|
| Single ride, cash | 7,000 to 20,000 VND | 0.27 to 0.77 |
| Single ride, cashless | 6,000 to 19,000 VND | 0.23 to 0.73 |
| One-day pass | 40,000 VND | 1.55 |
| Three-day pass | 90,000 VND | 3.50 |
Fares come from the city's decision as reported by Sai Gon Giai Phong. For everything else, compare Grab with the electric taxi firm Green SM (called Xanh SM until April 2026), which narrowly overtook Grab nationally in late 2024 with 37.41 percent of the ride-hailing taxi market (Viet Nam News).
What safety issues are specific to Ho Chi Minh City?
Traffic and bag snatching are the two things to plan for. Motorbikes fill every street, so cross at a slow, steady pace and let riders flow around you rather than stopping or running. The UK travel advice says bag snatching by thieves on motorcycles is common, so hold bags in front of you or on the side away from traffic, and keep your phone in your hand away from the curb.
Watch out: UK advice also warns that offers of free bus transfers to hotels can be scams. Book transport through Grab, Green SM or your hotel, and check that the car and driver match the app.
The same advice warns of methanol poisoning from drinks bought in licensed bars and shops in tourist areas, so be careful with spirits and cocktails. Heat is a quieter risk: carry water, and plan outdoor sights for the morning in the hot months of April and May.
How much does Ho Chi Minh City cost?
Sights and transport are cheap, rooms cost about the same as in Da Nang or Hoi An, and sit-down dining runs a little higher than in central Vietnam. Prices were checked on 2 October 2026. We convert at 26,000 VND to US$1, rounded from Vietcombank's published rate that day (25,790 VND buying by transfer, 26,170 VND selling).
| Item | VND | About US$ | Source |

| Meal for two, mid-range restaurant | 600,000 | 23 | Numbeo |
Numbeo's figures are crowd-sourced, and street stalls usually come in under the restaurant price above.
What food is worth seeking out in Ho Chi Minh City?
Start with the city's breakfast dish and work outward. The national tourism site's guide to eating like a local points to:
- Com tam: broken rice with honey-glazed barbecued pork chop, a fried egg, spring onions and pickled papaya.
- Hu tieu: rice noodle soup in several regional styles, including Phnom Penh and Sa Dec versions.
- Banh mi: the Vietnamese sandwich with pork, pate, butter, pickles and chili.
- Goi cuon: fresh spring rolls of lettuce, herbs, rice noodles, pork and prawn.
- Seafood and snails: grilled and stir-fried cockles and razor clams, best on Vinh Khanh Street in the old District 4, which fills up after 6pm.
When is the best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City?
December to April is the dry season, and December and January are slightly cooler, which makes them the most comfortable months, according to the national tourism site. It suggests avoiding the April and May heat and treats May to November as the rainy season.
| Months | Average rain days (Tan Son Nhat) | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| December and January | 5 and 2 | Dry and slightly cooler, the most comfortable months |
| February to April | 1 to 4 | Dry and getting hotter, with average highs reaching 34.5°C in April |
| May to October | 13 to 19 | The rainy season, with rain on roughly half the days or more |
| November | 9 | Rain easing toward the dry season |
Rain-day averages and temperatures come from the Tan Son Nhat climate table, which cites the Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology and the WMO. In the rainy season, keep a museum or a cafe in reserve for wet afternoons.

Limitations
Long Thanh's opening date has slipped before, so treat 1 December 2026 as a plan, not a promise, and check your booking. Airline terminal assignments at Tan Son Nhat have also changed since Terminal 3 opened. Cu Chi entry fees differ between sources and between Ben Dinh and Ben Duoc, and guide fees may be added, so confirm what your tour includes. Ward names are new and some hotels, maps and apps still use the old districts. Notre Dame has no confirmed reopening date. Metro hours, bus routes and fares can change around Tet and on holidays. Hotel averages are Kayak-based estimates and Numbeo food prices are crowd-sourced, so compare live prices for your dates.
