Ninh Binh is the best short trip from Hanoi, and it is better with two nights than as a day trip. Book the Trang An boat for the caves, climb Hang Mua for the view, and spend the rest of your time cycling flat lanes between karst towers and rice fields.
How we built this guide: we checked the Trang An Landscape Complex Management Board's 2026 ticket list, 2026 news reports on price changes and route closures, the Ninh Binh tourism department's site, UNESCO's listing, WMO climate normals and published transport times on 2 October 2026. We did not visit for this update.
How does Ninh Binh work for a first-time visitor?
Ninh Binh is two places: a working provincial city with the train station, and a scenic district of karst valleys a short ride away, where you actually spend your days. A 2026 transport guide from Bhaya Cruises notes that most tourist sites sit 5 to 15 km from the city center. The scenery is protected as the Trang An Landscape Complex, which UNESCO inscribed in 2014 as a mixed cultural and natural site of 6,226 hectares. UNESCO notes more than 30,000 years of human activity in its caves and that Hoa Lu, an early capital of Vietnam, was established here in the 10th and 11th centuries.
Each attraction sells its own ticket, so there is no single pass. The province itself also changed in 2025: Ninh Binh merged with Nam Dinh and Ha Nam into one larger Ninh Binh province, so some addresses and maps now use new ward names.
How many days should you spend in Ninh Binh?
Two nights is the right amount for most travelers. Day one: Trang An by boat in the morning, Hoa Lu in the afternoon. Day two: Hang Mua at opening time, then Tam Coc and a slow cycle around the villages. A day trip from Hanoi works if you are short of time, but you will spend about four hours in transit and see the sites at their busiest.
Trang An, Tam Coc or Hang Mua: which should you choose?
If you only do one boat ride, choose Trang An, and add Hang Mua for the view. The table compares the main sites at the Trang An Management Board's 2026 prices, updated with April 2026 increases.
| Site | What you do | Adult price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trang An | Rowed boat through caves, temples and karst valleys, about 3 hours | 300,000 VND (since 1 Jan 2026) | The classic Ninh Binh boat trip |
| Tam Coc - Bich Dong | River trip through rice fields and caves, plus Bich Dong pagoda | 250,000 VND | Rice-field scenery close to Tam Coc village |
| Hang Mua | About 500 steps to a viewpoint over Tam Coc | 150,000 VND (since 1 Apr 2026) | The best panorama in the area |
| Hoa Lu ancient capital | Temples of the 10th and 11th century capital | 20,000 VND | History, short visit |
| Thung Nham bird park | Bird garden eco-park | 250,000 VND (since 1 Apr 2026) | Families, birdlife |
| Van Long | Nature reserve visited by boat | 100,000 VND | A second, different boat trip |
Trang An's three routes
All three Trang An routes cost the same and take about three hours, according to a 2026 route guide. Route 1 passes nine caves, including Hang Toi and Hang Nau Ruou, plus the Tran temple. Route 2 covers four caves and the Vu Lam palace area and is the most popular. Route 3 includes the longest water cave in the complex. Your ticket buys a seat in a hand-rowed boat shared by four to five people, with travel insurance. Routes can close after heavy rain: on 31 July 2026, CafeF reported, Route 3 was paused because cave water levels had risen.
Tam Coc
Tam Coc is the more pastoral of the two boat trips, and it starts right in Tam Coc village. The board lists the Tam Coc - Bich Dong ticket at 250,000 VND per adult, or 350,000 VND with electric shuttle cars to Thai Vi temple, Tien cave and Bich Dong pagoda. The list does not spell out whether a boat seat is included, so confirm at the counter before you pay.
Hang Mua
Hang Mua is the climb that gives you the postcard view over the Ngo Dong River and Tam Coc's fields. The Ninh Binh tourism department describes about 500 stone steps to the top. Entry rose from 100,000 VND to 150,000 VND on 1 April 2026, Bao Van Hoa reported. Go at opening time, before the heat and the tour buses.
Hoa Lu
Hoa Lu's temples are small, but they explain why this landscape matters to Vietnamese history. At 20,000 VND for adults, it is the cheapest ticket in the area and an easy add-on to Trang An, which is nearby.
If you have a third day
A third day is best spent away from the boat piers. Cuc Phuong National Park, a forested park west of the karst area, charges 60,000 VND per adult, and its primate conservation program adds 80,000 VND, according to the management board's list. Van Long (100,000 VND) offers a slower boat trip through a nature reserve. Bai Dinh, the vast pagoda complex, is reached by electric car at 150,000 VND return. A driver for the day makes this combination easy, since the sites are spread out.
Where should you stay in Ninh Binh?
Stay in Tam Coc village unless you have a reason not to. It puts Hang Mua, the Tam Coc boats and quiet cycling lanes on your doorstep.
| Area | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Tam Coc village | Bikes, homestays, evening restaurants, Hang Mua and Tam Coc nearby | Can be busy at night in peak season |
| Near Trang An and Hoa Lu ancient town | Early starts at Trang An, the free-entry Hoa Lu old town | Fewer independent eateries |
| Ninh Binh city | Train and bus links, cheaper business hotels, local food streets | 5 to 15 km from the scenery |
| Rural homestays around the karsts | Quiet, views from the garden | Need a bike or scooter for everything |
Budget Your Trip puts traveler-reported hotel prices in Ninh Binh at about $22 (570,000 VND) in the off-season and about $41 (1,070,000 VND) in peak season, with a range from about $14 to $78.
Is cycling the best way to explore Ninh Binh?
Cycling is the best way to see the countryside around Tam Coc, between the ticketed sites. The lanes through the rice fields are flat, and bicycle rental is common in Tam Coc village. Use a bike for Tam Coc, Hang Mua and the villages, and a taxi or ride-hailing car for longer hops such as Trang An to Bai Dinh or the city.
Watch out: the shortcuts between sites often join main roads with trucks and buses. Ride on the right, wear a helmet if one is offered, and avoid the midday heat from May to September.
Electric scooters and motorbikes are widely rented too. For licensing rules and the wider picture, see getting around Vietnam.
How do you get to Ninh Binh?
Ninh Binh is about 90 to 95 km south of Hanoi, and most travelers come by limousine van or train. Per Bhaya Cruises, the limousine van takes about two hours and costs roughly 150,000 to 350,000 VND, while the train takes two to two and a half hours with fares of about 80,000 to 200,000 VND depending on class. Many vans can drop you at your hotel, while trains stop at Ninh Binh station in the city. Compare every option on Hanoi to Ninh Binh, and onward links on Starting from Hanoi.
How do you get around locally?
Use bicycles near Tam Coc, and taxis or ride-hailing for anything across the district. Bai Dinh, the large pagoda complex northwest of Trang An, runs electric cars at 150,000 VND return per adult, according to the board's list. Many homestays arrange drivers for a half or full day, which is the easiest way to combine Trang An, Hoa Lu and Bai Dinh.
What safety issues are specific to Ninh Binh?
The main risks are heat, roads and flooding rather than crime. Our Vietnam safety page covers general advice.
- Heat and sun: boats are open, and the nearest WMO station, Hanoi, averages highs of about 33 to 34 degrees Celsius in June and July (WMO). Bring a hat, water and sunscreen.
- High water: heavy rain can close cave routes, as with Trang An's Route 3 in July 2026.
- Steep steps: Hang Mua's stairs are uneven, so wear shoes with grip and skip it in rain.
- Roads: quiet lanes meet busy highways; cycle in daylight.

What food is worth seeking out in Ninh Binh?
Goat is the local dish to try. The Trang An Management Board's food article names goat meat and com chay, crispy scorched rice, as Hoa Lu specialties, and notes that Ninh Binh goat was listed by the Vietnam Record Center among 50 Vietnamese specialty dishes. Restaurants around Hoa Lu and Tam Coc serve it in several styles, including smoked. The same article points to food streets in Ninh Binh city, including a breakfast street in Van Giang, if you stay in town.
When is the best time to visit Ninh Binh?
Autumn and spring are the most comfortable seasons for boats and cycling. Ninh Binh has no WMO-listed station, so we use Hanoi's normals, about 90 km north, as a guide.
| Months | Average low to high (Hanoi) | Rainfall (Hanoi) | In Ninh Binh |
|---|---|---|---|
| December to February | About 15 to 22 degrees Celsius | 19 to 28 mm a month | Cool, often misty karsts |
| March to April | About 19 to 28 degrees Celsius | 55 to 79 mm a month | Green fields, comfortable cycling |
| May to September | About 25 to 34 degrees Celsius | 188 to 335 mm a month | Hot, wet, highest risk of route closures |
| October to November | About 19 to 30 degrees Celsius | 48 to 126 mm a month | Clear days, ideal for bikes and boats |
Weekends and Vietnamese public holidays are the busiest times at the boat piers, so aim for weekdays if you can. For the national picture, see best time to visit Vietnam.

Limitations
Ticket prices come from the Trang An Management Board's list and 2026 news reports as of 2 October 2026, and several of them changed during 2026. The board's own list still showed the older Thung Nham price when we checked, so the April 2026 figure comes from a news report. We could not confirm from an official source whether the Tam Coc ticket includes a boat seat, or whether Trang An's Route 3 has reopened. Transport fares and times come from a travel company's 2026 guide, not from operators. Before you go, check which Trang An routes are open after rain, confirm Tam Coc's inclusions at the counter, and book trains through Vietnam Railways or a trusted agent.
