Nha Trang is a city beach, not a castaway one, and it works best when you treat the city as a base and the bay as the point. Give it two or three nights, spend one day on the water around the islands, see the Po Nagar towers early, and come between February and August. From October to December, heavy rain, floods and rough seas can take the beach off the table.

How we built this guide: on 2 October 2026 we checked Vietnam's national tourism site, World Meteorological Organization climate normals, UK travel advice, 2024 to 2026 Vietnamese news reports on Po Nagar, the Hon Mun diving ban, floods and sea rescues, Vietnam Airlines' and Vietjet Air's published guides, Baolau's transport listings and published cost data, plus the figures in our route guides. We did not visit Nha Trang for this update.

How does Nha Trang work for a first-time visitor?

Nha Trang is a resort city with a long beach along its seafront and a bay full of islands. VietNamNet counts 19 islands in the bay, which holds Vietnam's first marine protected area, set up around Hon Mun in 2001. It is busy: Khanh Hoa province had more than seven million visitors in 2023, about 70 percent of them in Nha Trang.

For visitors the city splits in two: the central beachfront on Tran Phu Street has the hotels and nightlife, and the north end, toward Hon Chong and Po Nagar, is quieter. The airport is at Cam Ranh, well to the south.

Addresses changed in 2025. The old city was reorganized into wards, and the center is now Nha Trang ward of Khanh Hoa province, formed on 16 June 2025 from five former central wards, per Wikipedia. You will also see names such as Tay Nha Trang and Nam Nha Trang.

How many days should you spend in Nha Trang?

Two or three nights is right for most people. A simple plan:

  • Day one: Po Nagar at opening time, Hon Chong and the north end of the beach, then a mud bath in the afternoon.
  • Day two: a boat trip to the islands, with snorkeling around Hon Mun and lunch on board or on an island.
  • Day three: a slow beach morning, the Long Son Pagoda, and seafood at the beach grills in the evening.

Add a night or two for diving, or if you are breaking a long trip between Hoi An and Saigon.

Where should you stay in Nha Trang?

Stay on the central beachfront for a first visit, or at the north end if you want quieter nights.

Budget Your Trip puts traveler-reported hotel prices at about US$26 (676,000 VND) off-season and US$49 (1,274,000 VND) in the winter peak, in a range from about US$12 to US$125. The national tourism site describes Long Beach as home to seafood joints and surfing spots.

What is worth your time in Nha Trang?

The bay and the Cham towers are the two things you cannot get elsewhere on this coast. The city beach is pleasant, but it is the backdrop, not the highlight.

The Po Nagar Cham towers

Go at opening time, before the heat and the tour buses. The Cham people built the towers between the 8th and 13th centuries to honor the goddess Po Nagar, four towers still stand, and the main tower rises 23 m, per Bao Van Hoa. The site was upgraded to a special national relic in January 2025, and Vietnamese worship of the Mother Goddess has blended with the Cham tradition here since the 17th century.

It is still an active temple, so dress for it. MoMo's visitor guide says no sleeveless tops, shorts, skirts above the knee, hats or sunglasses inside, and that you can borrow a robe at the entrance for free. It lists opening hours of 8:00 to 18:00 and a ticket of 21,000 VND, though we could not find an official 2026 price list.

The main festival falls on the 20th to 23rd days of the third lunar month, and in 2026 its program ran from 5 to 11 May, with thousands of pilgrims, per Tuoi Tre. Expect big crowds.

Hon Chong and the north end

Hon Chong, a headland of granite boulders at the north end of the bay, pairs well with Po Nagar in one morning. The beach grills near Hon Chong are a good place for seafood in the evening, and a whole grilled squid cost about 80,000 VND there in an August 2026 food guide. The national tourism site also points to the Long Son Pagoda, with its 78-foot (about 24 m) Buddha, and the Bao Dai Villa.

A day on the islands

A boat day around the bay is the best thing to do in Nha Trang. Most trips stop at Hon Mun for snorkeling. Local Vietnam, updated in May 2026, says snorkeling is offered on almost every tour and the marine reserve fee is 22,000 VND for adults, usually included in the tour price. It also warns that the reef has been badly degraded, so set your expectations accordingly.

Pick a smaller boat over a party boat if the reef is the point.

Mud baths

A mud bath and a soak in hot mineral water is the classic Nha Trang afternoon, and it is good after a morning on a boat. The national tourism site places the mud baths and hot springs in the hills just north of the city. A Vietjet Air guide lists adult packages from 120,000 to 1,000,000 VND at the Thap Ba center on Ngo Den Street and from 170,000 to 900,000 VND at I-Resort, a 12-hectare site with mineral pools. Packages run from a basic mud soak to massage and jacuzzi add-ons.

When can you dive and snorkel, and what are the seas like?

The water is calmest from about March to September, and diving around Hon Mun has been restricted since 2022. Local Vietnam rates March to September as the best season, with July to September best for visibility, and says rough seas regularly cancel boat trips in October and November.

The diving rules changed after the reefs bleached badly. Swimming and diving in the Hon Mun area have been banned since June 2022 to protect bleached reefs, and in June 2024 Khanh Hoa named four other dive areas for one year: north of Hon Rua island, the artificial reefs at Vinh Hoa, northeast of Tri Nguyen island, and the waters between Bai Tranh and Bai Soi (Bac Ninh TV). Local Vietnam reports that some operators have since resumed limited, controlled diving. Ask your dive shop which sites it is licensed to use this season, and walk away from any shop that is vague about it.

The city beach has its own pattern. In the northeast monsoon, from late in the year into the dry months, big waves can roll onto Tran Phu. On 9 January 2026, winds of force 6 to 7 and waves of 2.5 to 3.5 m swept seven tourists out along Tran Phu and Nguyen Chanh streets; all were rescued (DTiNews).

What about typhoon season and floods?

Typhoons and floods are the main reason to avoid Nha Trang from October to December. The UK government puts the typhoon season at May to November and central Vietnam's rainy season at October to December, and warns that landslides can block roads. WMO normals give Nha Trang about 325 mm of rain in October, 400 mm in November and 224 mm in December, against under 80 mm in every month from February to August.

The 2025 season showed what that means. On 18 November 2025, after days of heavy rain, water rose above 2 m in parts of Tay Nha Trang and Nam Nha Trang wards, and a landslide on the Khanh Le Pass had killed six people two days earlier, per DTiNews.

Watch out: if you travel between October and December, book refundable rooms, keep a spare day, and check the forecast before any boat trip or mountain road.

How do you get to Nha Trang?

Fly into Cam Ranh, or arrive by train or bus along the coast.

  • By air: Cam Ranh airport is about 30 km from the city, per Wikipedia, and about 35 km by Vietnam Airlines' reckoning. Its airport guide lists bus 18 into town for 50,000 VND in 50 to 60 minutes, and taxis at about 250,000 to 350,000 VND.
  • From Ho Chi Minh City: trains take about 7 to 9 hours, with the fastest at 7 hours 43 minutes, and flights about 1 hour 10 minutes, per Baolau.
  • From Hoi An and Da Nang: an 8 to 11 hour sleeper bus, a 9 to 11.5 hour train from Da Nang, or a 1 hour 15 minute flight. See Hoi An to Nha Trang.
  • From Da Lat: about 3 to 4.5 hours by van over the Khanh Le Pass, which was closed from 18:00 to 5:00 on 26 September 2026, per Dan Tri. See Nha Trang to Da Lat and our Da Lat guide.

The Starting from Nha Trang hub lists every route out of the city.

How do you get around Nha Trang?

Walk along the beachfront and use ride-hailing or taxis for everything else. Grab lists Khanh Hoa among its service areas in Vietnam. Ask whether your island tour includes hotel pickup, and take a taxi to the mud baths in the hills north of town. If you rent a motorbike, the UK government says you need the 1968 international driving permit with your home license and third-party insurance.

What safety issues are specific to Nha Trang?

The sea is the main risk, followed by the storm season. Our Vietnam safety page covers the general picture.

  • Rough surf: during the 2026 Tet holiday, rescuers pulled 10 people from the water off Nha Trang beach and recovered the body of a foreign man on the same day, per Tuoi Tre News. The Nha Trang Bay Management Board asks swimmers to stay out of rough seas and rip currents and to follow the warning flags.
  • Floods and landslides: October to December, as above.
  • Boats: check that your boat carries life jackets for everyone and that the crew will turn back in bad weather.
  • Drinks: UK advice warns that methanol in spirits can kill, and that you cannot detect it by taste or smell.

How much does Nha Trang cost?

Nha Trang costs more per day than Da Lat on Budget Your Trip's traveler averages, about US$49 against US$37, mostly because visitors spend more on food and transport. Prices were checked on 2 October 2026. We convert at 26,000 VND to US$1, rounded from Vietcombank's published rate that day (25,790 VND buying by transfer, 26,170 VND selling).

Key facts at a glance

  • Bay: 19 islands, and Vietnam's first marine protected area, set up around Hon Mun in 2001 (VietNamNet).
  • Po Nagar: built between the 8th and 13th centuries, a special national relic since January 2025 (Bao Van Hoa).
  • Diving: swimming and diving banned in the Hon Mun area since June 2022 (Bac Ninh TV).
  • Rain: about 400 mm in November, the wettest month (WMO).
  • Airport bus: route 18 from Cam Ranh, 50,000 VND, 50 to 60 minutes (Vietnam Airlines).

Limitations

The diving rules are the least settled fact on this page. The official reports we found date from 2022 and 2024, and the newer claim that limited diving has resumed comes from a travel site, not the authorities, so confirm with your operator. The Po Nagar ticket price and the mud bath packages come from undated travel and airline guides, and the bus 18 fare from Vietnam Airlines' guide. Check on the day. Storm and flood seasons vary every year, and the Khanh Le Pass rules may change once repairs finish. Budget Your Trip and Numbeo figures are traveler averages, so compare live prices for your dates.
