Hue sits halfway along the classic route, so leaving it is a simple choice of direction. South, the short hop to Hoi An is the most scenic road trip in the country if you go over the Hai Van Pass. North, the overnight train to Hanoi does the long haul while you sleep, with Phong Nha's caves as an optional stop on the way.

How we built this guide: this page pulls together our two route guides that touch Hue, which checked Vietnam Railways' timetables for 14 October 2026 and listings on 12Go, Vexere, Baolau and Daytrip on 2 October 2026. Follow the links for the full detail behind each number.

Where do you leave from?

Trains leave from Hue Railway Station on Bui Thi Xuan street (Baolau). Buses are more scattered: depending on the operator, they use Nguyen Hoang Bus Station, the railway station forecourt or company offices around Le Loi street, per the listings in our Hanoi to Hue guide. Tourist vans to Hoi An often collect you from your hotel, so check the pickup when you book. Flights use Hue's airport (HUI).

South to Hoi An: do you want the Hai Van Pass?

Decide that first, because it sets the price and the time. The pass climbs between the mountains and the sea north of Da Nang, and the Da Nang tourism portal uses its traditional nickname, the most majestic pass under heaven. The tunnel underneath is faster but you see nothing.

North to Hanoi: sleep on the train

The overnight train is the best value for most people. On Vietnam Railways' timetable for 14 October 2026, trains run in both directions, and the overnight services between Hanoi and Hue take 12.5 to 13 hours. A flight takes about 1 hour 15 minutes in the air, and sleeper buses take 10 to 12 hours from about US$19 on 12Go.

To break the trip, stop at Phong Nha for its caves. Buses from Hue to Phong Nha take about 4 to 5 hours on 12Go, and Phong Nha to Hanoi about 7 to 8 hours (12Go).

Tips for leaving Hue

  • Flood season: Vietnam's tourism authority warns of occasional flooding around Hue from September to November (VNAT). Keep a spare day and check the pass road before you ride it.
  • Early arrivals: night trains and buses can reach Hue before dawn, so book a room from the night before or ask about early check-in.
  • Motorbike tours: ride only with a licensed, insured operator, and not in heavy rain.

Limitations

These figures are a snapshot of timetables and booking sites checked on 2 October 2026, not our own trips. Prices move with demand and rise around Tet, and Vietnam Railways adjusts its timetable during the year. In the autumn rains, landslides and floods can close the Hai Van Pass road or delay trains at short notice, so check conditions on the day you travel.
