Phu Quoc is the one place in Vietnam where foreign visitors flying in directly from abroad can arrive without a visa. Give it three or four nights, pick your coast before you book, and come between November and March, when the west coast is calm and the rain mostly stops. In the wet months, choose your beach by the wind, not by the photos.

How we built this guide: on 2 October 2026 we checked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' visa exemption list and the 2019 immigration law amendment, Vietnam's national tourism site, Wikipedia's climate table for the island, 2025 and 2026 Vietnamese news reports on the new special zone, APEC 2027 construction and sea rescues, flight and ferry listings on Kayak and Baolau, a 2026 cable car ticket guide and published cost data. We did not visit Phu Quoc for this update.

How does the Phu Quoc visa exemption work?

Foreigners who enter Phu Quoc directly from abroad get 30 days without a visa, whatever their nationality. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs' exemption list, updated to 14 March 2025, says the rule also applies if you stay in the transit area of another Vietnamese international airport or seaport and then continue to the island.

The legal basis is the 2019 amendment to Vietnam's immigration law, in force since 1 July 2020. It allows visa-free entry to coastal economic zones chosen by the government that have an international airport and their own separate territory, cut off from the mainland, and it grants a 30-day stay (Law 51/2019/QH14). Phu Quoc is the only place the ministry's list names under this rule, and Wikipedia notes that all foreign tourists have been able to visit visa-free since March 2014.

Two conditions catch people out:

  • Do not clear immigration elsewhere first. If you land in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi and pass through passport control there, you have entered mainland Vietnam, and normal visa rules apply.
  • The stay is for the island. The law leaves travel on to other parts of Vietnam to separate government rules, so if you plan to continue to the mainland, get an e-visa first or check whether your nationality is exempt. Many nationalities already have their own visa-free stays in Vietnam, and our Vietnam visa guide has the current lists.

How does Phu Quoc work for a first-time visitor?

Phu Quoc is a long, mountainous island in the Gulf of Thailand, with a town in the middle of its west coast and resorts spread north and south. Since 1 July 2025 it has been a special zone of An Giang province, covering more than 589 km² and including the former wards of Duong Dong and An Thoi, per SGGP. Duong Dong, on the west coast, is the main town, and An Thoi sits on the southern tip.

The island is busy and getting busier. SGGP reported nearly 4.5 million visitors in the first half of 2025, about 900,000 of them international, and VnEconomy put foreign arrivals at more than 1.2 million in the first nine months of 2025. Expect building work too: Phu Quoc hosts APEC in November 2027, and 21 projects were under way in April 2026, including a second airport terminal, a convention center and a 17.7 km, 10-lane road due by 30 April 2027, per Nguoi Lao Dong.

How many days should you spend on Phu Quoc?

Three or four nights is right for most people, because the beaches are far apart. A simple plan:

  • Day one: Long Beach and the sunset, then dinner at the night market in Duong Dong.
  • Day two: the south: the Hon Thom cable car in the morning, then an afternoon at Sao Beach.
  • Day three: a boat trip around the An Thoi islands, booked for the morning.
  • Day four: the north, with a pepper farm, the national park or a slow resort day.

Where should you stay: north, south or Long Beach?

Pick Long Beach for a first visit, the south if beaches are the whole point, and the north if you want quiet.

AreaBest forTrade-offs
Duong Dong and Long Beach (west coast, middle)The most hotels, sunsets, the night market, close to the airportBuilt-up, and the west coast takes the swell from May to September
The south: An Thoi, Sao and Khem beachesThe cable car, the best sand, boat trips to the An Thoi islandsFar from the night market in Duong Dong
The north: Ganh Dau, Bai Thom and Ong LangQuiet resorts, the national park, the theme parksLong rides to town and the night market

The national tourism site describes Long Beach as 20 km of unobstructed sunsets and the northern beaches at Ganh Dau and Bai Thom as home to secluded resorts. Kayak-based averages on Budget Your Trip put a hotel room at about US$29 (754,000 VND) in the low season and US$54 (1,404,000 VND) at peak, with budget rooms from about US$16 and luxury rooms to about US$123.

What is worth your time on Phu Quoc?

The sea is the reason to come, so build each day around the right beach for the wind. Long Beach, facing west, is for sunsets; the theme parks are fine for families but not why Phu Quoc is special.

Sao Beach

Sao Beach, on the southeast coast, has the fine white sand and pale water on this page, and it is the beach to see if you see only one. A sea-conditions guide on vietnamtourism.com, published in August 2026, recommends it from November to April and advises avoiding it in July and August. Local Vietnam notes that east coast beaches such as Sao and Bai Vong may be calmer than the west in September. Go in the morning; the vietnamtourism.com guide notes that the wind builds through the afternoon.

The Hon Thom cable car

The cable car from An Thoi to Hon Thom island is billed as the world's longest three-rope cable car, at more than 7,899 m, and the view over the fishing harbor and the islands is the best on Phu Quoc. A 2026 ticket guide published in April lists the adult round trip at 850,000 VND, including the Aquatopia water park on Hon Thom, with the first cars at 9:30 and the last trip back at 17:30.

Our view: go early on a clear day, and skip it on a gray one. The ride is the point, and haze takes most of it away.

The An Thoi islands by boat

A boat trip around the small islands off the southern tip is the classic snorkel day. The same vietnamtourism.com guide says these trips run best from December to April, when the water is flattest, and advises booking morning departures in any season because the wind builds in the afternoon.

The north: forest, pepper and theme parks

The north is greener and quieter. Phu Quoc National Park, set up in 2001, covers 336.57 km² of the north of the island, and pepper is grown across the island, especially in Ganh Dau and Cua Duong. The national tourism site says more than half of Phu Quoc has been part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2006. The Vinpearl Safari and other big parks are up here too, if you are traveling with children.

Phu Quoc Prison

For history, visit the former prison. From 1953 to 1975 the island held South Vietnam's largest prisoner camp, with 40,000 prisoners in 1973, per Wikipedia. The national tourism site lists it as Cay Dua prison.

When is the rainy season, and which coast is calm?

The rainy season runs from roughly April to November, and the west coast is calmest from November to March. The climate table on Wikipedia, citing the Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology, shows about 27 to 61 mm of rain a month from January to March and 380 to 490 mm a month from June to September.

MonthsRainSea and beaches
December to March27 to 61 mm a monthCalm on the west coast in the light northeast wind; the best time for Long Beach and boat trips
Aprilabout 148 mmHot, with showers starting
May to September281 to 486 mm a monthSouthwest monsoon; swell on the west coast, worst from July to September, with 1.5 to 2 m waves common
October to November354 mm, then 164 mmRain easing, seas settling

The sea figures come from vietnamtourism.com, which puts the calmest seas from November to March. In the wet months, the east coast is more sheltered than the west, but it is not always calm.

How do you get to Phu Quoc?

Fly. Kayak lists nonstop flights from Ho Chi Minh City of about 1 hour, with 20 to 22 a day on Sun PhuQuoc Airways, Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air and Vietravel Airlines. It showed one-way fares from US$24 and typical round trips of US$64 to US$103. There are direct international flights as well, which is how the visa exemption works.

By sea, speed ferries from Rach Gia take 2 hours 30 minutes for 324,000 VND with Superdong or Phu Quoc Express, per Baolau, which warns that sailings may be interrupted in the storm season from July to October. Our Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc guide compares the flight with the bus and ferry, and the Starting from Ho Chi Minh City hub lists the other routes.

How do you get around Phu Quoc?

Use ride-hailing or taxis, or rent a scooter if you ride well. Grab lists Phu Quoc among its service areas in Vietnam. Buses run on the main roads: Sun Group's 2026 bus guide gives about 20 to 30 minutes from the airport to Duong Dong, 40 to 50 minutes from Duong Dong to An Thoi and 50 to 70 minutes to Ganh Dau, at about 20,000 to 40,000 VND a ride. For scooters, the UK government says you need the 1968 international driving permit with your home license and third-party insurance.

What safety issues are specific to Phu Quoc?

The sea is the main risk, above all on the west coast in the monsoon. Our Vietnam safety page covers the general picture.

  • Rough water: on 20 May 2026, a tourist drowned and two were injured off a beach in Duong Dong during strong winds and high waves, and officials said warnings to stay out of the water in bad weather had been issued repeatedly (DTiNews). On 31 August 2025, five tourists were swept out by waves and one was left in critical condition (DTiNews).
  • Boat trips: book morning departures and make sure everyone has a life jacket.
  • Storms: the UK government puts the typhoon season at May to November, and ferries may stop in bad weather.
  • Construction: expect road works and detours as APEC 2027 projects race to finish.

Watch out: from May to September, swim only where lifeguards are on duty and stay out when red flags are up or the waves are big. If the west coast is rough, pick a more sheltered beach or the pool.

How much does Phu Quoc cost?

Phu Quoc costs more than Da Lat or Nha Trang, mainly for rooms: Budget Your Trip's travelers spent about US$55 a day here. Prices were checked on 2 October 2026. We convert at 26,000 VND to US$1, rounded from Vietcombank's published rate that day (25,790 VND buying by transfer, 26,170 VND selling).

What food is worth seeking out on Phu Quoc?

Eat seafood, and eat the island's own dishes in the morning. A Vietjet Air guide points to these:

  • Bun quay: fresh noodles in seafood broth, with fish or shrimp paste stirred in until it cooks, a breakfast dish in Duong Dong.
  • Bun ken: a creamy coconut and fish noodle soup with turmeric and lemongrass.
  • Goi ca trich: marinated herring salad with herbs and shredded coconut, at Ham Ninh fishing village and around Sao Beach.
  • Ham Ninh crab: blue crab from Ham Ninh fishing village, grilled, in soup or with fried rice.
  • Seafood grills: at the night market on Vo Thi Sau Street in Duong Dong.

Bring home the fish sauce. Phu Quoc fish sauce received Protected Designation of Origin status in the European Union in 2012, the first Vietnamese product to do so, per Viet Nam News. Check your airline's rules before you pack liquids.

When is the best time to visit Phu Quoc?

November to March is the best time to visit Phu Quoc: dry, calm on the west coast and warm. April and May are the hottest months, with temperatures reaching 35°C per Wikipedia, and June to September brings low-season hotel prices, heavy rain and rough water on the west coast. The national tourism site describes the island as warm all year, at about 27°C on average. For the rest of the country, see best time to visit Vietnam, and for a city stop on the way, our Ho Chi Minh City guide.

Limitations

The visa rule is the fact that matters most, and the official exemption list we used was last updated on 14 March 2025, so confirm it with your airline or a Vietnamese embassy before you fly, especially if you are connecting through another Vietnamese airport. The cable car price and hours come from a 2026 ticket guide rather than an official price list, and bus times and fares from an undated 2026 guide by Sun Group, which also runs the cable car. Sources disagree on Sao Beach in the wet months, so check the wind on the day. APEC construction may change roads and airport access through 2027. Hotel and flight prices are averages, so compare live prices for your dates.
