Fly the long jumps, ride the train along the coast, and take a bus or van where the railway does not go. That simple split works for most Vietnam trips. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are about 1,680 km apart, according to Baolau, so a north-to-south trip without at least one flight or night train eats days you could spend exploring.

How we built this guide: we read Vietnam Railways' official timetable for 15 October 2026, fares and journey times on Baolau and 12Go, the UK, Australian and Canadian governments' transport advice, and 2025 and 2026 government news on expressways and airlines, all on 2 October 2026. Fares are what the booking sites showed that day, converted at about 26,000 VND to US$1, close to Vietcombank's published US dollar rates on that date (25,760 buying, 26,170 selling).

Should I fly between cities?

Fly when a train or bus would take most of a day. On the Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City run, Baolau listed flights of about two hours with Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Bamboo Airways and Pacific Airlines. Shorter hops are quick too: Hanoi to Hue is about 1 hour 15 minutes from 905,781 VND (about US$35), and Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang about 1 hour 10 minutes (Baolau).

The domestic market has grown crowded. Voice of Vietnam named Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, Bamboo Airways, Vietravel Airlines and the newer Sun PhuQuoc Airways among the carriers expanding their networks in December 2025 (VOV).

Two practical notes. Delays are common: CAPA reported that the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam recorded on-time performance of 68% for Vietnamese airlines in August 2026 (CAPA), so leave a buffer before onward connections. And carry the same passport you entered Vietnam with, because Smartraveller says you may be refused boarding on a domestic flight with a different one.

Is the Reunification Express worth taking?

Yes, for at least one leg. The North-South line links Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City by way of Ninh Binh, Hue, Da Nang and Nha Trang, and Lonely Planet points out that an overnight sleeper saves a night's accommodation. These are the scheduled times in Vietnam Railways' official timetable for departures on 15 October 2026 (Vietnam Railways):

Hanoi to Lao Cai (for Sapa)7 h 45 min (SP7)7 h 55 min (SP3)2

Baolau showed Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City fares from 1,003,000 to 3,300,000 VND (about US$39 to US$127), from hard seats to soft sleeper berths, with private carriages from companies such as Violette Trains on some services (Baolau). Vietnam Railways sells tickets at dsvn.vn.

Keep valuables in a bag you sleep with, since the UK government warns of petty theft on overnight trains, and keep your ticket stub, which Smartraveller says you need to leave the station. Around Tet, book early: our best time to visit guide explains the 2027 Tet rail rules.

How do sleeper buses, limousine vans and open-tour buses compare?

Buses reach places the main railway does not serve directly, such as Sapa town, where trains stop at Lao Cai, and they are often the cheapest way to cover short distances. You will meet three types:

  • Sleeper buses with reclining berths or private cabins. On Hanoi to Sapa, 12Go listed operators including HK Buslines, Inter Bus Lines and Sao Viet, with journeys of five and a half to seven and a half hours (12Go).
  • Limousine vans, minibuses with fewer and larger seats, also sold on 12Go and Baolau.
  • Open-tour buses, which sell flexible tickets along the tourist trail. The Sinh Tourist, for example, lists open-bus services linking Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Da Lat, Mui Ne and Saigon (The Sinh Tourist).

Safety is the trade-off. The FCDO says bus and coach crashes are not uncommon and more likely at night, and Smartraveller says inter-city buses have a high accident rate. Daytime departures with a well-reviewed operator reduce the risk. Our Vietnam bus companies compared guide goes operator by operator.

How have the new expressways changed travel times?

They have made road travel much faster than it was, but they help cars more than buses. Vietnam expected to finish about 3,513 km of expressways by the end of 2025, with all 23 component projects of the eastern North-South Expressway in operation (Viet Nam News). VietnamPlus reported that 1,313 km opened between 2021 and 2025 alone, nearly as much as the previous 20 years combined (VietnamPlus).

A private car runs door to door with a stop or two. A bus adds pickups in town, rest and meal breaks and a run to the bus station, so the same road takes longer. On Hanoi to Sapa, Baolau lists a private transfer at 5 hours 30 minutes and buses at 5 hours 30 minutes to 6 hours 30 minutes, while 12Go gives buses five and a half to seven and a half hours and some recent reviews there mention long stops and late arrivals. On Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang, Baolau shows 7 hours by private car against 7 to 9 hours by bus, with the train at 7 to 9 hours too.

The lesson: when you see a travel time online, check which vehicle it is for. A car time quoted on a forum does not apply to the sleeper bus you booked.

Is Grab the easiest way to get around cities?

For most visitors, yes. The UK government recommends official ride-hailing apps such as Grab or Xanh SM (renamed Green SM in April 2026) because they supply licensed vehicles, and warns against people claiming to work for them (FCDO). Lonely Planet adds that app rides tend to be cheaper than street-hailed taxis and show the price before you ride (Lonely Planet). Grab's Vietnam app also covers food and parcel delivery (Grab). Canada calls street motorbike taxis (xe om) unsafe (Government of Canada), so if you ride pillion, use a decent helmet.

Can I rent a motorbike legally?

Only with the right license, and the rules depend on where you are from. The UK government says British riders need the 1968 international driving permit and their UK license, plus third-party insurance, which is compulsory. Australia and Canada say a Vietnamese license is required for any motorbike of 50cc or more, and Australia says Australian-issued permits are not accepted. Our safety guide covers helmets, deposits and what happens after an accident.

When do I need a ferry?

For the islands. One ferry route to Phu Quoc runs from Rach Gia and takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, with Superdong and Phu Quoc Express operating, according to Baolau, which warns that the service may be interrupted in the storm months from July to October. Boats are also central to Ha Long Bay; Smartraveller says vessels have sunk there, so check life jackets and the safety briefing. See our Ha Long Bay guide.

Limitations

Timetables change, especially around Tet and after storm damage, and the train times above are for one October 2026 date only. Fares on booking sites move daily and depend on class and how early you book. Airlines, bus operators and the expressway network all change quickly, so recheck schedules before you commit to tight connections. Motorbike license rules differ by nationality and their enforcement varies, so take the strictest reading. Before you travel, confirm your train on dsvn.vn and your bus or ferry with the operator.
