Ha Long Bay is worth one night on the water, not a rushed day from Hanoi. The karst islands look their best early and late, when the day boats have gone, and an overnight cruise is the only easy way to be there at those hours.

How we built this guide: we read the Ha Long Bay Management Department's fee, itinerary, visiting-time and storm-notice pages, Quang Ninh's 2025 fee resolution, Hai Phong's 2026 fee decision for Lan Ha Bay, UNESCO's listing, WMO climate normals and 2025 news reports on 2 October 2026. Cruise prices come from one operator's published rates. We did not sail for this update.

How does a Ha Long Bay trip actually work?

You do not wander Ha Long Bay on your own: you board a licensed boat that follows one of a set of official routes, and your ticket price depends on that route. The bay is part of the Ha Long Bay - Cat Ba Archipelago World Heritage property, first inscribed by UNESCO in 1994, with boundary changes in 2000 and 2023. UNESCO describes 65,650 hectares and 1,133 islands and islets across Quang Ninh and Hai Phong.

Most boats leave from Tuan Chau International Marina or Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay. The management board numbers its routes VHL1 to VHL8, and each has its own fee. Cruise and tour prices often bundle that fee, so ask whether it is included before you compare quotes. In summer (1 April to 31 October), boats may depart from 5am and must be back at the pier by 8pm, according to the board's visiting-time page.

Should you do a day trip or an overnight cruise?

Choose an overnight cruise if you can, and a day trip only if Ha Long is a box you need to tick on a tight schedule. The road from Hanoi takes a big share of a day trip, while a night aboard turns the same transfer into a slow evening and morning on the water.

Fees are from the management board's fee page, updated 31 March 2025. The board's fee schedule lists overnight stays only on routes 2, 3 and 4. Under its exemption rules, children under 1.2 m (or under seven) go free and children aged seven to under 16 pay 20 percent less.

How many days should you give Ha Long Bay?

Plan two days and one night from Hanoi for the classic trip, or three days if you want to add Cat Ba Island or a second night in a quieter area. A one-night cruise typically leaves Hanoi in the morning and returns the next afternoon. If you are pressed, the day trip still shows you the scenery, just not at its best hours.

Which area should you choose: Ha Long, Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long?

Choose by crowd tolerance and by where you want to end up. All three are karst seascapes; what changes is the traffic on the water, the port you leave from and the fee.

Ha Long Bay's core routes

VHL1 visits Thien Cung Grotto and Dau Go Cave, and VHL2 visits Ti Top Island, Sung Sot Cave and Luon Cave. The route 2 page calls Sung Sot the largest cave discovered in the bay so far. These are the classic day routes, so expect company.

Lan Ha Bay

Lan Ha Bay sits off Cat Ba Island in Hai Phong, so it falls under Hai Phong's fees rather than Quang Ninh's. From 1 January 2026, Bao Hai Phong reported, bay routes in the Cat Ba archipelago cost 120,000 VND per adult, with overnight stays at 400,000 VND for one night, 600,000 VND for two and 650,000 VND for three. Cat Ba National Park charges 160,000 VND per adult. Quang Ninh's VHL6 route, added in 2025, runs from Ha Long to Cap Bai islet next to Gia Luan at the edge of Lan Ha Bay, according to Resolution 51/2025, which is how some Ha Long cruises reach it.

Bai Tu Long Bay

Bai Tu Long Bay lies northeast of Ha Long Bay, toward Van Don, and cruise operators usually market it as the less crowded choice. Its national park promotes itself as an ASEAN Heritage site. The Ha Long management board's fee rules cover both Ha Long and Bai Tu Long, so confirm the exact fee with your operator.

Where should you stay?

Stay on a boat if you can, and in Bai Chay or Cat Ba town if you cannot. Hotels make most sense for travelers who prefer to sleep on land and take a day boat.

Budget Your Trip puts traveler-reported hotel spending in Ha Long at about $54 (1,400,000 VND) per day. Treat it as a rough average, not a quote.

What is worth doing on the bay?

The best things on the bay are the quiet ones: kayaking into lagoons, swimming off the boat, and climbing for a view. Caves are impressive but crowded at midday.

  • Kayak or row through Luon Cave. The management board describes a tunnel-like cave that opens onto an enclosed lagoon where you can paddle or take a rowing boat.
  • Climb Ti Top Island. The island is named after the Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, who visited with President Ho Chi Minh in 1962, according to the route 2 page. The viewpoint is the classic photo.
  • Walk Sung Sot Cave. It sits about 20 m above sea level up a steep path, so wear proper shoes.
  • Pick route 3 or 4 for something different. They cost less and visit the Cua Van floating culture center (VHL3) or Thay and Cap La caves (VHL4).

How do you get to Ha Long Bay?

Most travelers come by road from Hanoi on a cruise shuttle or a limousine van, and the trip is under three hours on the expressways. Sun Group's travel site puts Hanoi to Van Don, east of Ha Long, at 2.5 to 3 hours. Cruise companies usually sell a round-trip shuttle from the Old Quarter with the cabin. For buses, vans and timings, see Hanoi to Ha Long Bay, and for the wider network, Starting from Hanoi.

How do you get around locally?

On land, use taxis or ride-hailing between your hotel, Bai Chay and Tuan Chau. On the water, you can only travel on licensed boats and routes, which is why independent island hopping is not really an option in Ha Long Bay itself. Cat Ba is easier to explore by motorbike or bicycle once you are on the island.

What safety issues are specific to Ha Long Bay?

Weather is the main risk on the bay, and sailings stop when authorities say so. On 13 June 2025, ahead of Storm Wutip, the management board suspended overnight permits and required boats to return passengers to the mainland by 6pm. On 20 July 2025, Tuoi Tre News reported, all tourist boats were halted ahead of Typhoon Wipha.

On 19 July 2025, the day before, the tourist boat Vinh Xanh 58 capsized in a sudden thunderstorm with 49 people aboard. Only 10 were rescued; by 24 July, 37 bodies had been recovered and 2 people were still missing, according to VOV. Forecasters said the storm came from wind convergence along a low-pressure trough, not from the typhoon. Our takeaways:

  • Book licensed boats; the management board publishes lists of licensed day and overnight vessels on its site.
  • Wear the life jacket on small transfer boats and kayaks, and keep children in theirs.
  • Treat a suspension as final. Do not accept an informal departure after an official stop.
  • Buy travel insurance that covers weather cancellations. Our Vietnam safety page has more.

How much does Ha Long Bay cost?

Your cruise choice decides the budget; fees and food are small in comparison. We converted at about 26,000 VND to US$1, between Vietcombank's published USD buying and selling rates (25,760 and 26,170) on 2 October 2026.

The Paradise Vietnam rates are for its own five-star boats and are per cabin, not per person. Budget and mid-range boats cost less, so compare like with like and check whether sightseeing fees, kayaks, drinks and the Hanoi shuttle are included.

What food is worth seeking out?

Seafood is the reason to eat well here. On cruises, meals are usually set menus with prawns, squid, clams and fish. On land, look for cha muc, Ha Long's fried squid cake, which shows up in markets and restaurants around Bai Chay and Hon Gai. At seafood restaurants priced by weight, confirm the price per kilo and weigh the catch before it goes in the pot.

When is the best time to visit Ha Long Bay?

October and November give the best balance of warm weather, low rain and fewer storm cancellations. WMO normals for Hai Phong, the nearest coastal station listed, show the pattern.

Limitations

Fees here match the management board's pages and the 2025 and 2026 fee decisions as of 2 October 2026; Quang Ninh and Hai Phong set them by resolution and can revise them. Cruise prices come from one five-star operator's published rates and are not representative of budget boats. Travel times are estimates and depend on traffic and your pickup point. Storm suspensions can be announced the same day, from June to October in particular. Before booking, confirm which route your boat sails, whether fees and transfers are included, and what the cancellation policy says about weather.
