Vung Tau is where Ho Chi Minh City goes to the sea, and that is both its appeal and its limit. It is close, cheap and lively, with a giant Christ statue, an old lighthouse and plenty of seafood. It is not a postcard beach. For a foreign visitor it works best as one or two nights midweek, or as a stop before the ferry to Con Dao, rather than as the beach week of a Vietnam trip.

How we built this guide: on 4 October 2026 we checked the ferry operator's own fare notices and booking system, Vexere bus listings, 2025 and 2026 Vietnamese news reports on the expressway, the lighthouse road and beach rescues, Wikipedia's entries and climate table, two visitor guides to the Christ statue, 12Go's car listings and a September 2026 Vung Tau guide on vietnamtourism.com. We did not visit Vung Tau for this update.

Where is Vung Tau, and what changed in 2025?

Vung Tau is a peninsula city about 95 km southeast of central Saigon, and since the 2025 reorganization it has been a ward of Ho Chi Minh City rather than part of Ba Ria Vung Tau province, per Wikipedia. The ward had about 117,000 people on 16.86 km² at the end of 2024. Two hills frame it, Nui Lon (Big Mountain) and Nui Nho (Small Mountain), and Nghinh Phong cape at its tip, the old Cap Saint-Jacques, is now the southernmost point of the city's mainland.

Expect to see both names on tickets and maps. Hotels may still give an old "Ward 2, Vung Tau City" address, while booking sites show Vung Tau ward, Ho Chi Minh City.

Is Vung Tau worth a foreign visitor's time?

Yes, if you want a short, easy taste of Vietnamese beach life close to Saigon; no, if you want clear water and quiet sand. The September 2026 vietnamtourism.com guide puts it plainly: Vung Tau suits travelers after proximity, local life and seafood, not a classic tropical holiday.

How many days do you need in Vung Tau?

One night is enough for the sights, and two let you slow down. A simple plan:

  • Day one: take the 09:00 ferry from central Saigon, arriving about 11:00, and have lunch. Climb Nui Nho to the Christ statue in the early afternoon, after its lunch break and well before it closes, then spend the late afternoon on Back Beach and eat seafood in the evening.
  • Day two: walk or ride the shuttle up to the lighthouse early for the view over Front Beach, have banh khot for breakfast, and take the 12:00 or 15:00 ferry back.

The ferry times are from GreenlinesDP's booking system for 17 and 21 October 2026. With a third day, add Long Hai or Ho Tram up the coast.

Which beach should you choose?

Swim at Back Beach and watch the sunset from Front Beach. Wikipedia lists four main beaches: Back Beach (Bai Sau), Front Beach (Bai Truoc), Strawberry Beach (Bai Dau) and Pineapple Beach (Bai Dua).

BeachWhat it is likeBest for
Back Beach (Bai Sau)Wide sand and the calmest water, where locals swim, per vietnamtourism.comSwimming between lifeguards, evening seafood stalls
Front Beach (Bai Truoc)The city's bay, shallower and less appealing for swimmingSunset views over the bay
Strawberry Beach (Bai Dau)Quieter, less developed and popular with localsA calm morning away from the crowds
Pineapple Beach (Bai Dua)A rocky cove with walking pathsA short walk, not a swim

How safe is swimming at Back Beach?

Safe enough if you follow the lifeguards, and risky if you do not. In October 2025, SGGP reported that lifeguards had pulled 28 people from the water at Back Beach in the first ten months of the year, out of more than 3 million swimmers. A 70-strong team watches the beach, about one lifeguard every 200 to 300 m, and black flags mark the rip currents, which are worst in the northeast monsoon from November to April. Rescuers advise staying in the shallows, keeping children close and not swimming before 6am or after 6pm.

Watch out: the water here is greenish-brown, not clear, and vietnamtourism.com advises skipping the sea for 24 to 48 hours after heavy rain. In the rainy months, check the sky before you plan a swim.

How do you visit the Christ statue?

Go early, dress modestly and bring water for about 800 steps. The statue stands 32 m tall on a 4 m base on Nui Nho, about 170 m above the sea, with arms spanning about 18 m, per Wikipedia. It was begun in the 1970s and finished in 1994. Vietnamese Wikipedia counts 811 steps up the hillside, and a spiral staircase of 133 steps inside the statue leads up to the arms.

Entry is free. VinWonders gives hours of 7:00 to 17:00 with a lunch break from 11:30 to 13:00, while Xanh SM gives a 16:30 close, so do not leave it late. Both ask for respectful clothing, and Xanh SM specifies no sleeveless tops or shorts above the knee. Both say you remove your shoes before the inner stairs, and that each group gets only about 5 to 10 minutes at the top, about three people at a time per Xanh SM. Our etiquette page covers dress at religious sites more generally.

Is the lighthouse worth the trip up?

Yes, for the best view of the peninsula, and it is easy now that a shuttle runs. The lighthouse on the top of Nui Nho was built in 1862 and restored in 1913, stands 18 m tall and still guides ships with a light visible 63 km away, per a July 2026 Zing report.

The same report explains the access rules. Since February 2026, cars have been banned from Hai Dang road from 5am to 8pm, and electric vehicles carry visitors up and back for 30,000 VND. The ward is widening the first 220 m of the road, a project due to finish in 2027, and visitors can still reach the lighthouse during the work. Vietnamtourism.com says entry is free.

What should you eat in Vung Tau?

Seafood, and the dishes the city is known for. Vietnamtourism.com names these:

  • Banh khot: small, crisp shrimp pancakes from a special pan, wrapped in lettuce with herbs. Vung Tau's signature dish.
  • Bun rieu: crab and tomato noodle soup, best at breakfast.
  • Grilled scallops: sold from street stalls along Back Beach in the evening.
  • Stingray hotpot: also on the guide's list of local dishes.

Ask the price by weight before you order live seafood. For the rest of the country, see what to eat in Vietnam.

What about Long Hai and Ho Tram?

Both are quieter coastal towns east of Vung Tau, and both are now part of Ho Chi Minh City. Long Hai lies about 15 km south of Ba Ria, with a fishing port, the Dinh Co shrine and a beach along the foot of Minh Dam mountain, and Vietnamese Wikipedia puts its visitors at 1.8 to 2 million a year. Ho Tram, about 30 km east of Ba Ria and roughly 100 km from central Saigon, is the resort coast, home to The Grand Ho Tram and its 18-hole golf course.

Choose Long Hai for a local beach town and Ho Tram for a resort stay. On 12Go, private cars from Ho Chi Minh City to Ho Tram for 21 October 2026 were timed at 2 to 2.5 hours.

When is the best time to visit Vung Tau?

December to April is the dry season, and weekdays beat weekends in any month. The climate table on Wikipedia, citing the Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology, shows the pattern.

MonthsRain a monthAverage highWhat to expect
January to April1 to 34 mm29.3 to 32.0°CDry and sunny; rip currents strongest in the northeast monsoon
May to October182 to 240 mm30.7 to 32.4°CRainy season; October is the wettest month
November and December16 to 64 mm29.8 to 30.6°CRain easing

Crowds matter as much as weather. From Friday afternoon to Sunday evening buses fill and hotels raise their rates, while Monday to Thursday prices drop by 30 to 50 percent, per vietnamtourism.com. Demand is rising: the ward welcomed 1.5 million visitors in the first quarter of 2026, 25 percent more than a year earlier, Zing reported. For the rest of the country, see best time to visit Vietnam.

How much does Vung Tau cost?

Vung Tau is cheap by beach-town standards, especially midweek. Vietnamtourism.com puts a budget traveler's day at 700,000 to 1,200,000 VND and a mid-range day at 1,500,000 to 2,500,000 VND. How do you get to and around Vung Tau?

Take the ferry for the experience, a bus or van for value, or a car for speed. The GreenlinesDP high-speed ferry leaves the Bach Dang waterfront in central Saigon at 09:00 and 12:00 and takes about 2 hours, and adults pay 350,000 VND on any day from 1 October 2026, per the operator's fare notice. Vexere lists 15 bus and van companies with an average trip of 2.8 hours.

Cars got faster in 2026. The 54 km Bien Hoa to Vung Tau expressway opened in full on 18 May 2026, for cars with fewer than nine seats only, per Tien Phong, so full-size buses cannot use it. Our Ho Chi Minh City to Vung Tau guide has the timetables, piers and pickup points, and the Tan Son Nhat airport guide helps if you land first. Vung Tau is also a departure port for Con Dao in calmer months; see Ho Chi Minh City to Con Dao.

In town, Grab lists Vung Tau among its service areas, so ride-hailing and taxis cover the short hops between the beaches, the hills and the ferry terminal. Our Grab and taxis page explains how to use them, and the Starting from Ho Chi Minh City hub lists other trips out of the city.

Limitations

The Christ statue's opening hours and dress rules come from two visitor guides, not an official notice, and they disagree on the closing time and the lunch break, so arrive in the morning. Beach descriptions, daily budgets and the weekend price gap come from one 2026 travel guide, and hotel rates move a lot around weekends and holidays. Ferry times come from the operator's booking system for two October dates, and the operator says on its website to confirm the schedule by hotline, so check before you travel. The rescue figures are for 2025, and sea conditions change daily. Climate figures are long-term averages.
