Buon Ma Thuot is a working highland city rather than a postcard town, and the reason to visit is in the cup. This is where much of Vietnam's coffee is grown and roasted, and two or three days here combine a serious coffee education with big waterfalls, a lake ringed by M'nong villages, and Ede longhouse villages. Come in the dry season, hire a driver for the out-of-town days, and leave the elephant rides off your plan.

How we built this guide: on 4 October 2026 we checked the World Coffee Museum's own 2026 price list, the provincial government's notice of its opening, Vietnamese Wikipedia's climate table for the city, 2022 to 2026 news reports on elephant tourism, the coffee festival plan and Dray Nur falls, a 2026 attraction price list, a 2025 provincial travel guide, and Vexere's flight and bus listings. We did not visit Buon Ma Thuot for this update.

Where is Buon Ma Thuot, and why is it the coffee capital?

Buon Ma Thuot sits in the middle of the Central Highlands at an average of about 500 m above sea level, roughly 350 km from Ho Chi Minh City, per Vietnamese Wikipedia. The same entry says coffee was first planted on a large scale here in French plantations after the 1930s, because the red basalt soil suited it so well.

The numbers explain the nickname. Dak Lak province produces more than 40 percent of Vietnam's coffee exports, and the region is the world's largest producer of robusta beans, VOV reported in June 2026, noting that National Geographic had named the city among its 15 best food destinations for 2026.

The map changed in 2025. A National Assembly resolution passed on 12 June 2025 merged Phu Yen province into Dak Lak, with Buon Ma Thuot as the capital, per Wikipedia, and the city itself was reorganized into wards. Tickets and addresses may show either the old or the new names.

How many days should you spend in Buon Ma Thuot?

Plan two full days at least, and three or four for a relaxed trip, as Local Vietnam also advises. A simple plan:

  • Day one: the World Coffee Museum in the morning, lunch in town, then an Ede village and a coffee farm near Ea Kao Lake in the afternoon.
  • Day two: Dray Nur falls in the morning, about 25 km out, and the Dak Lak Museum back in town.
  • Day three: Lak Lake and its M'nong villages, about 50 to 60 km south, or Yok Don National Park for the elephant-friendly program.

Is the World Coffee Museum worth it?

Yes, it is the easiest way into the city's coffee story, and it is in town. Trung Nguyen Legend opened it on 23 November 2018 on Nguyen Dinh Chieu street, with buildings whose cube shapes are based on the longhouses of the Central Highlands, per the provincial government. VOV describes thousands of artifacts on the history of coffee around the world, with interactive exhibits.

Prices are from the museum's own price list, and its website gives opening hours of 7:00 to 18:00. The 120-minute tour adds a visit to the museum's Zen garden to the exhibits. Dak Lak residents get lower prices, except on holidays.

Where can you taste coffee on a farm?

At farms and coffee villages around the city. VOV highlights two:

  • Aeroco Coffee Farm, on the shore of Ea Kao Lake, runs tours from cultivation to brewing, with quality-control demonstrations and tastings.
  • Trung Nguyen Coffee Village, a 20,000 m² site with tasting areas, cultural exhibitions and preserved old coffee trees. It is free to enter, per a 2026 price list from the travel agency Intour.

For something closer to daily life, Ako Dhong village is one of the most prosperous and picturesque Ede villages, with more than 30 traditional longhouses, per Local Vietnam. Ea Kao Lake itself is about 12 km from the center and popular at dawn and sunset, when the fishermen set out, per a Bac Ninh Newspaper guide.

Are Dray Nur and Dray Sap falls worth the trip?

Yes, especially in the wet months, when they are at their fullest. Dray Nur lies about 25 km from downtown Buon Ma Thuot on the Serepok River, reached via National Road 14 and the turning for the Buon Kuop hydropower plant, and its "water wall" is more than 30 m high, per a March 2026 VUFO feature. Visitors walk forest trails and can explore the cave behind the falls.

Intour's 2026 list puts Dray Nur's entry at 30,000 VND (about US$1.15). Dray Sap, which VUFO calls the "husband" waterfall, lies on the opposite bank in Lam Dong province since the 2025 merger. Local Vietnam's 2025 guide says paths and bridges connect the two, but we could not confirm from a 2026 source that the crossing is open, so ask at the Dray Nur gate before planning both.

Watch out: treat the rocks and pools at the falls as dangerous, especially after rain, keep back from the edge, and swim only where staff say it is allowed.

What is there at Lak Lake?

Lak Lake is the place to slow down. Local Vietnam calls it Vietnam's second-largest natural freshwater lake, about 50 km from Buon Ma Thuot, surrounded by M'nong villages with traditional longhouses, and suggests kayaking to see life along the shore. Wikipedia puts it about 60 km south of the city and notes that the province takes its name from it: "dak" means water or lake in M'nong. Intour lists entry to the lake area at 10,000 VND.

Some villages offer homestays, per Local Vietnam, so you can stay the night. Bring cash: Local Vietnam warns that rural homestays often do not take cards and ATMs are scarce outside the city.

What should you know about elephant rides at Lak and Yok Don?

Do not ride the elephants, and choose a program where you only watch them. This is what is on the record:

  • The plan: Dak Lak approved a project worth more than 55.4 billion VND (about US$2.2 million), supported by the Animals Asia Foundation, to replace elephant riding with "elephant-friendly" tourism in Buon Don and Lak districts from November 2022 to December 2026, Viet Nam News reported. The province then had 37 domestic elephants, and 22 had died between 2009 and 2021.
  • Buon Don: the Buon Don suspension bridge tourism center stopped rides on 10 February 2023, freeing six elephants from carrying tourists, per VietnamPlus.
  • Yok Don: Yok Don National Park has offered a no-riding experience with Animals Asia since July 2018, where visitors watch elephants eat, bathe and roam in the forest.
  • Lak: in March 2025, Viet Nam News reported 35 domestic elephants in the province, rides still on offer in Lak district, no official regulation banning them, and a provincial instruction to end riding completely after 2026.

We found no report confirming whether rides at Lak Lake had stopped by October 2026. If you see one offered, walk on. Intour lists Yok Don's entry at 60,000 VND; ask at the visitor center for its elephant program.

When is the best time to visit Buon Ma Thuot?

November to April, when the rain all but stops. The climate table on Vietnamese Wikipedia, citing the Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology, shows a sharp split.

MonthsRain a monthRainy daysAverage highWhat to expect
December to March5 to 25 mm1 to 626.4 to 32.8°CDry, sunny, cool nights; the best travel season
April86 mm8.333.6°CThe hottest month, showers starting
May to October222 to 310 mm17.7 to 25.328.6 to 32.0°CRainy season; waterfalls at their fullest; August is wettest
November96 mm1127.4°CRain easing

Local Vietnam adds that the wet season makes Dray Nur and Dray Sap more dramatic but turns some rural roads to mud. Book early if you are coming for the festival: the 10th Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Festival is planned for 5 March to 4 April 2027 in a draft reported in May 2026 by Doanh Nghiep Hoi Nhap, with about 600 exhibition booths and the theme "Buon Ma Thuot, destination of world coffee". It also marks the anniversary of the 10 March 1975 battle for Buon Ma Thuot. For the rest of the country, see best time to visit Vietnam.

How much does Buon Ma Thuot cost?

Sightseeing is cheap; transport out of town is the main cost. Prices were checked on 4 October 2026, and we convert at 26,000 VND to US$1, rounded from Vietcombank's published rate that day (25,790 VND buying by transfer, 26,170 VND selling).

How do you get to and around Buon Ma Thuot?

Fly from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, or ride a sleeper bus overnight. For 21 October 2026, Vexere showed five direct flights from Tan Son Nhat, timed at 55 minutes to an hour, from 919,781 VND, and its bus listings counted 54 companies with an average trip of 8.1 hours. Our Ho Chi Minh City to Buon Ma Thuot guide compares them, and our Fly or Ride research prices the hours a flight saves on this route.

From elsewhere in the highlands and on the coast, Local Vietnam times the road from Da Lat at about 5 hours and from Nha Trang at about 4 hours; see our Da Lat and Nha Trang guides. In town, Grab lists Buon Ma Thuot among its service areas, and our Grab and taxis page explains how to use it. For the waterfalls, the lake and Yok Don, a car with driver is the practical choice; drivers wait at each stop, though many speak limited English, Local Vietnam notes. If you plan to ride yourself, read renting a motorbike in Vietnam first.

Limitations

The waterfall, lake and national park prices come from one travel agency's 2026 list, not official notices, and Dray Nur's ticket may include extras on the day. We could not confirm whether the crossing from Dray Nur to Dray Sap is open in 2026, or whether elephant rides at Lak Lake have stopped; the latest report we found on rides is from March 2025. The festival dates come from a draft plan and may change. Distances to Lak Lake differ between sources, from about 50 km to about 60 km. Flight and bus fares are a snapshot for one date, and climate figures are long-term averages.
