Ban Gioc waterfall is worth the long trip north, but only if you give Cao Bang at least three days on the ground. The falls sit on the Chinese border, about two hours beyond Cao Bang city, and the best of the province is the countryside around them: karst peaks, rice valleys, a huge show cave and lakes linked by underground rivers. Visiting the Vietnamese side needs no special permit; crossing to the Chinese side is not open to foreign tourists.

How we built this guide: on 3 October 2026 we checked Vietnam's national tourism site, press reports on the Ban Gioc and Detian cross-border zone, Vietnam Coracle's February 2025 guide to the falls, two 2026 loop guides from tour companies, the UK government's travel advice, 2024 to 2026 reports on landslides and mobile coverage, and bus listings on Vexere and 12Go. We did not visit for this update.

What makes Ban Gioc and Cao Bang worth the trip?

Ban Gioc is the widest waterfall in Vietnam, and the landscape around it is some of the north's least crowded karst country. Vietnam's tourism board describes a fall about 300 m wide on the Quay Son River, with the main cascade dropping more than 30 m in three tiers down limestone cliffs, and Vietnam Coracle calls it the country's widest, though not its highest.

Much of the area lies in the Non Nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO Global Geopark, recognized on 12 April 2018. VTV put it at more than 3,270 km², home to over 250,000 people from nine ethnic minority groups. Cao Bang kept its borders in Vietnam's 2025 provincial mergers, one of 11 unchanged provinces (vietnam.travel).

Do you need a permit to visit Ban Gioc?

No separate permit is needed for the Vietnamese side; you buy a ticket at the gate. Vietnam Coracle said in its February 2025 update that foreigners can now simply turn up and buy one without any documents. Carry your passport anyway. The UK government warns that visiting a village close to the border may require permission from the provincial police, and that you should not photograph near military sites.

The cross-border zone is closed to foreigners

Vietnam and China opened a shared scenic area at the falls on 15 October 2024 after a one-year pilot, Viet Nam News reported. Only Vietnamese and Chinese citizens may cross, in groups of about 20 run by licensed agencies, for up to six hours and with entry between 8:00 and 14:00 Hanoi time. Third-country citizens are temporarily not allowed, per Bao Van Hoa, and the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office still described it that way in March 2025. Ignore anyone who offers to take you across informally.

When is the water highest?

The falls are fullest in the rainy season, from June to September, and calmest in the dry months. Sources disagree on the single best time, so choose by what you want to see.

Vietnam's tourism board recommends the dry season, October to April, as the best overall time to visit Cao Bang, while Oxalis Adventure suggests September to November and March to April for riding the loop. If the falls are your priority, aim for September to November. For the rest of the country, see best time to visit Vietnam.

What should you see around Ban Gioc?

Plan a full day for the falls and the sights within a few kilometers of them.

  • Ban Gioc waterfall. Bamboo rafts take you to the foot of the falls; Vietnam Coracle quoted 100,000 VND per person for about 10 minutes. Truc Lam Phat Tich pagoda, on a hill nearby, looks over the valley, per vietnam.travel.
  • Nguom Ngao cave. A limestone cave system 2,144 m long, of which 948 m is open to visitors, per vietnam.travel. It lies about 1 km down a paved lane from Khuoi Ky village, and Vietnam Coracle lists entry at 45,000 VND, with guided deeper tours at 200,000 VND.
  • Khuoi Ky. Known as a stone village, it sits near the cave and has budget homestays, according to Vietnam Coracle and Oxalis Adventure.

What is the Cao Bang loop?

The Cao Bang loop is a three-day ride from Cao Bang city to Ban Gioc and back by a different road. Oxalis Adventure puts it at roughly 200 to 250 km, while Local Vietnam's three-day tour covers about 290 km. Oxalis describes the roads as generally well paved with light traffic, but with steep passes and tight bends.

Thang Hen lakes

Thang Hen is a system of 36 small lakes linked by caves and underground channels; in the rainy season the water rises and joins them into one long lake through a valley of karst peaks, per vietnam.travel.

Pac Bo

Pac Bo is a village 3 km from the Chinese border where Ho Chi Minh sheltered in a cave for seven weeks in February and March 1941 after three decades abroad, per Wikipedia. The site now has a memorial and museum, according to vietnam.travel, and it is the usual reason to add a fourth day.

Riding it yourself or with an easy rider

Ride yourself only with a license that is valid in Vietnam; otherwise hire a driver or an easy rider. Oxalis puts most three-day easy rider tours at $180 to $220. License rules depend on your passport, and our Ha Giang guide explains the UK and Australian requirements in detail. Make sure your travel insurance covers riding on the license you hold.

How many days should you give Cao Bang?

Give it four or five days from Hanoi. Three days on the loop is the standard, with a night bus or a travel day at each end. With only two days on the ground, go straight to Ban Gioc and Nguom Ngao, sleep near the falls, and come back the same way.

Where should you stay?

Split your nights between Cao Bang city and the countryside near the falls.

Cao Bang city sits on National Road 3, about 270 km from Hanoi, in a valley where the Bang Giang and Hien rivers meet, per Wikipedia. Vietnam Coracle mentions a mid-range resort near the falls and budget homestays in Khuoi Ky. Oxalis puts private homestay rooms at 250,000 to 300,000 VND a night.

How do you get to Cao Bang from Hanoi?

By bus or limousine van, in about 5 to 9 hours. Vexere listed about 70 departures a day from 16 operators on 3 October 2026, between 05:00 and 21:35, with an average trip of 7.1 hours and an average fare of 315,000 VND. A few night sleepers run straight to Trung Khanh and Ban Gioc. Our Hanoi to Cao Bang guide compares the options, and Starting from Hanoi covers the rest of the north.

How do you get around once you are there?

By motorbike, car with driver, or the vans that link Cao Bang city with Ban Gioc. Vietnam Coracle puts the falls 83 km east of Cao Bang city, about 1.5 to 2 hours by road, with local buses several times a day, motorbikes at about 200,000 VND a day and a car with driver at $80 to $100 a day. On 12Go, vans left Cao Bang bus station for Ban Gioc at 07:00, 09:00 and 17:00 on 14 October 2026, taking 2 hours for 248,000 VND.

How much does Cao Bang cost?

Transport and your choice of rider are the main costs; entry fees are small. We converted at about 26,000 VND to US$1, between Vietcombank's published USD buying and selling rates (25,760 and 26,170) on 3 October 2026. Where a source gave dollars, the VND figure is our conversion.

What safety issues are specific to Cao Bang?

Landslides on mountain roads in the rainy season are the main risk. On 9 September 2024, during Typhoon Yagi, a landslide and flash flood swept a passenger bus with more than 20 people aboard off a mountain road in the Nguyen Binh area, leaving over 30 people dead or missing, DTiNews reported. Rains at the end of June 2026 flooded or damaged 175 points on National Road 34 in Cao Bang, according to the AHA Centre.

  • Travel by day and stop when heavy rain sets in; the UK government says night buses are more likely to crash.
  • Expect weak signal. A September 2026 review still listed Cao Bang among 13 provinces with villages lacking mobile coverage (VietnamPlus); download offline maps and see our SIM card guide.
  • Respect the border. Stay on marked paths at the falls, and do not take photos near military sites, as the UK government advises.

Our Vietnam safety page covers traffic and insurance.

What food is worth seeking out?

Try pho chua, the sour noodle dish that Vietnam's tourism board names as one of Cao Bang city's local specialties (vietnam.travel). In homestays, expect set family meals; tell your host in advance about any dietary needs.

Limitations

Entrance and raft prices come from Vietnam Coracle's February 2025 update and a 2026 tour company guide, not from an official 2026 fee list, and the two disagree slightly. The no-permit advice rests on Vietnam Coracle and could change; border rules are set locally. The cross-border zone rules come from 2024 and 2025 reports, and we found no announcement opening it to other nationalities by 3 October 2026. Loop distances differ between operators. Weather notes are patterns, not forecasts. Before you go, check road conditions and the forecast, carry your passport and cash, and confirm what your tour or homestay includes.
