Mui Ne is where Vietnam's south coast turns dry and windy, and that is the reason to come. Plan two or three nights between November and April, see the dunes at the edges of the day, and give it four or five if you want to learn to kitesurf. Do not plan a long swimming holiday: parts of the resort beach have eroded, and the wind that makes Mui Ne so good for kites also makes the sea rough.

How we built this guide: on 3 October 2026 we checked Vietnam's national tourism site, Vietnamese Wikipedia's entries for Mui Ne and Phan Thiet's climate, 2025 and 2026 news reports on the airport build and beach erosion, 2026 guides to kitesurfing, the dunes and the Fairy Stream, Vietnam Railways' timetable, Baolau and 12Go listings and published cost data. We did not visit Mui Ne for this update.

How is Mui Ne different from Phan Thiet?

Phan Thiet is the city, and Mui Ne is the resort and fishing ward about 25 km to its east. Since 1 July 2025 both have been wards of Lam Dong province, after Binh Thuan province merged into it. Mui Ne ward was formed from the old Ham Tien and Mui Ne wards and Thien Nghiep commune, and covers about 118.6 km² with around 50,000 people, per Vietnamese Wikipedia. Tickets, maps and hotel addresses may show either the old Binh Thuan names or the new ones.

For visitors, three places matter. Ham Tien is the long resort strip along Nguyen Dinh Chieu street, with the kite schools, restaurants and most bus drop-offs. Mui Ne village, at the east end of the bay, has the fishing harbor and the red dunes. Phan Thiet city has the train station and city prices. The tourism boom began with visitors who came for the solar eclipse of 24 October 1995, per English Wikipedia.

How many days should you spend in Mui Ne?

Two or three nights covers the sights, and kitesurfing needs two more. A simple plan:

  • Day one: arrive by early afternoon, walk the Fairy Stream when the heat drops, then watch the sunset from the red dunes.
  • Day two: a sunrise trip to the white dunes at Bau Trang, the fishing harbor on the way back, and the Po Shanu towers later in the day.
  • Day three: a kite lesson or a slow beach morning, then seafood in the evening.

Local Vietnam's kite guide, updated in May 2026, says a beginner needs around 9 to 12 hours of lessons over several days before riding alone.

Where should you stay: Ham Tien, Mui Ne village or Phan Thiet?

Stay on the Ham Tien strip for a first visit, but look at the beach in front of your hotel before you book.

The buses we checked set down in Ham Tien: FUTA Bus Lines (Phuong Trang) and Nam Hai Travel on Baolau, and Hanh Cafe at 117 Nguyen Dinh Chieu on 12Go. Budget Your Trip puts the average double room paid by its travelers at about US$51 (1,326,000 VND) a night. Vietnamtourism.com places the main kite area between the fishing harbor and the east end of the bay, where a sandbar makes a shallow lagoon.

Which sand dunes should you see?

See the red dunes at sunset if you have one evening, and add the white dunes at sunrise if you have a spare morning. They are very different trips.

Red dunesWhite dunes (Bau Trang)
Distance from Phan ThietAbout 25 km, north of Mui Ne villageAbout 65 km northeast
EntryNo fee; scooter parking about 10,000 to 20,000 VNDAbout 15,000 VND, plus about 10,000 VND parking
Best lightLate afternoon to sunsetSunrise
What people doSandboarding, about 50,000 VND a boardATV and jeep rides, about 500,000 to 800,000 VND

The distances come from the national tourism site, and the prices from a May 2026 Local Vietnam dunes guide.

The red dunes are the easy one: they sit by the road near Mui Ne village, their color shifts with the light, and Local Vietnam says a visit rarely takes more than 20 to 30 minutes. The white dunes are bigger, emptier and far out of town, "flying" sand hills around freshwater lakes in the national tourism site's words. Local Vietnam recommends arriving before 5:30am, ahead of the tour groups, and puts a jeep tour of both sets of dunes at around 500,000 VND per jeep for up to six people.

Watch out: ATV prices at Bau Trang are not fixed, per Local Vietnam. Agree on the price, the time and the route before you set off, and wear a helmet. The UK government warns that tour operators' safety standards in Vietnam may be lower than you are used to.

Is the Fairy Stream worth it?

Yes, for an hour in the late afternoon. Suoi Tien is a shallow stream between white and ochre rock formations, about 18 km northeast of Phan Thiet, per the national tourism site, and you walk up the streambed itself.

A May 2026 Local Vietnam guide puts entry at about 15,000 VND per adult, plus about 5,000 VND to leave your shoes, for a walk of about 1.5 km. The water rarely rises above the ankle, though some parts get deeper without warning. Go barefoot or in rubber-soled sandals, between 7 and 9am or 3 and 5pm, because there is very little shade. Buy the stream ticket itself: the guide reports visitors being sold 50,000 VND tickets for a small zoo by the entrance.

What else is worth your time?

The fishing harbor, the Cham towers and the seafood round out a stay.

  • The morning fish market: get up early to see the boats come in with the night's catch, as the national tourism site suggests. It fits neatly on the way back from the white dunes.
  • The Po Shanu Cham towers: on a hill northeast of Phan Thiet city stand the ruins of three Cham temples from the 8th and 9th centuries, built in the Hoa Lai style of the Champa kingdom and listed as national monuments, per the national tourism site.
  • Seafood: eat at the "bo ke" grills along the seaside wall, with live seafood in tanks, per vietnam.travel. Local specialties include sun-dried squid (muc mot nang), mai fish salad (goi ca mai), fish hotpot (lau tha) and thick noodle soup with fish cake (banh canh cha ca). For the rest of the country, see what to eat in Vietnam.

When is kitesurfing season in Mui Ne?

November to March, with the peak from December to February. A 2026 kitesurfing guide on vietnamtourism.com puts average afternoon winds at 15 to 25 knots in the peak months. The wind is thermal: mornings are calm, it picks up around 11am and it builds until sunset, so beginners take lessons early.

MonthsWindWho it suits
Late October to NovemberNortheast trade winds arrive and buildEarly-season riders, with the wind still building
December to FebruaryPeak season, 15 to 25 knots in the afternoonConfident riders; lessons in the mornings
February and MarchCalled the sweet spot by Local VietnamMost riders
May to SeptemberSoutherly winds of 10 to 14 knots, best late in the afternoonRiders with a large kite, around 14 m

The shoulder and summer figures come from Local Vietnam, which counts around 230 windy days a year; vietnamtourism.com treats June to August as the off-season. The same vietnamtourism.com guide prices a three-day beginner course at 2,500,000 to 4,000,000 VND, and gear rental at about 800,000 to 1,500,000 VND a day, with a deposit of 5,000,000 to 10,000,000 VND.

What is the beach like now?

Patchy. In August 2025, VnExpress reported erosion along the curving shore of the old Ham Tien ward, made worse by makeshift embankments that each resort built its own way. Sand-filled fabric tubes more than 20 m long and 1.5 m high, plus concrete and rock barriers, cut across the beach, and walkers have to climb over them to get from one resort to the next. SGGP described the same giant sandbags in July 2025. VnExpress added that Lam Dong's agriculture and environment department issued technical rules for temporary barriers from July 2025, and that a study of the causes is due by the end of 2026.

Tip: before you book a beachfront room on the strip, look at recent guest photos and ask the hotel whether its own stretch of beach is usable. A good pool matters more here than in most beach towns.

When is the best time to visit Mui Ne?

December to April: almost no rain, steady wind and warm days. The climate table on Vietnamese Wikipedia, citing the Vietnam Institute for Building Science and Technology, shows how dry the winter is in Phan Thiet.

MonthsRain in Phan ThietAverage highWhat to expect

May to October136 to 192 mm a month30.9 to 32.6°CRainy season, lighter southerly winds, fewer visitors

The national tourism site recommends November to April. For the rest of the country, see best time to visit Vietnam.

Has Phan Thiet airport opened?

No. The runway is built, but the civil terminal is still a building site. Sun Group broke ground on the civil works on 27 April 2026, a project of nearly 4 trillion VND (about US$152 million) for about two million passengers a year in a first phase, per Tuoi Tre News. In August 2026, VOV reported piling under way for the terminal inside Mui Ne ward, and the aim of opening in 2027. Until then, fly to Tan Son Nhat; our Tan Son Nhat airport guide covers the first leg.

How do you get to Mui Ne?

Most people come by road from Ho Chi Minh City, which got faster when the 99 km Dau Giay to Phan Thiet expressway opened on 29 April 2023, per Wikipedia's expressway table.

  • By bus or van: about 3.5 to 4 hours on the services we checked, such as FUTA's 4-hour bus from Mien Tay for 230,000 VND on Baolau, though The Sinh Tourist still schedules 5 to 5.5 hours.
  • By private car: about 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes on 12Go, from about US$52 per car.
  • By train: SPT2 runs Saigon to Phan Thiet in 3 hours 57 minutes, per Vietnam Railways, but only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11 September to 30 December 2026, per Bao Van Hoa. Daily SE trains stop at Binh Thuan station, outside the city.

Our Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne guide compares them in full. The Sinh Tourist also times Mui Ne to Da Lat at 4 hours for 160 km and Mui Ne to Nha Trang at 5 hours; see our Da Lat and Nha Trang guides, and the Starting from Ho Chi Minh City hub.

How do you get around Mui Ne?

Use ride-hailing or taxis along the strip, and a jeep tour or private car for Bau Trang. Grab lists Binh Thuan and Phan Thiet among its service areas in Vietnam. If you rent a motorbike, the UK government says you need the 1968 international driving permit with your home license, and that riding without third-party insurance is illegal.

What safety issues are specific to Mui Ne?

The sea and the dune rides are the main risks; our Vietnam safety page covers the general picture.

  • Rough water: in July 2023, seven visitors got into trouble in big waves off a resort beach in Phu Hai ward and were pulled out by locals and resort staff, per Nhan Dan, which noted rough seas across Phu Hai, Ham Tien and Mui Ne that afternoon.
  • ATVs, jeeps and kites: agree on terms first, skip any ride that feels reckless, and kite with a school until you can ride alone.
  • Storms: the UK government puts Vietnam's typhoon season at May to November.

How much does Mui Ne cost?

Mui Ne costs about as much per day as Phu Quoc: Budget Your Trip's travelers spent about US$53 a day here, budget travelers about US$23 and luxury travelers about US$101. Prices were checked on 3 October 2026. We convert at 26,000 VND to US$1, rounded from Vietcombank's published rate that day (25,790 VND buying by transfer, 26,170 VND selling).

Limitations

The kite season figures come from travel and kite guides, not a weather agency, and the wind varies from year to year. Dune, ATV and Fairy Stream prices come from a May 2026 travel guide rather than official price lists, and ATV prices are negotiated on the spot. Sources disagree on how far Bau Trang is: the national tourism site says about 65 km from Phan Thiet, and Local Vietnam about 60 km from Mui Ne, so allow plenty of time for a sunrise trip. The state of the beach changes with each monsoon and differs from one resort to the next. The 2027 airport target may slip, as airport dates in Vietnam often do. Hotel and daily costs are traveler averages, so compare live prices for your dates.
