Phong Nha is worth two nights for its caves, and you do not need an expedition to see the best of them. Paradise Cave and the boat ride into Phong Nha Cave are easy to visit on your own with a ticket bought at the gate. Son Doong and Hang En are real expeditions run by one licensed operator, and they are priced and booked accordingly. Plan around the weather: from mid-September through November, rain and floods close caves at short notice.

How we built this guide: on 2 October 2026 we checked the ticket and route pages of the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park Management Board, Oxalis Adventure's tour pages and FAQ, UNESCO's listing, Vietnam's national tourism site, the UK government's travel advice, WMO climate normals, transport listings on Baolau and 12Go, and news reports from 2018 to 2026 on floods and Son Doong bookings. We did not visit for this update.

How does Phong Nha work for a first-time visitor?

Phong Nha is a small riverside village at the edge of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, and you use it as a base for day trips into the caves. UNESCO inscribed the park in 2003 and changed its boundaries in 2015 and 2025; since the 2025 extension it has been a cross-border World Heritage property with Hin Nam No National Park in Laos, covering 217,447 hectares in total. UNESCO describes karst that began forming about 400 million years ago, the oldest large-scale karst area in Asia, with more than 220 km of caves and underground rivers documented.

The caves fall into two groups. Show caves, such as Phong Nha Cave, Tien Son, Paradise Cave and the Dark Cave, sell tickets at the entrance and need no booking. Adventure caves, such as Son Doong and Hang En, are reached only on multi-day treks with a licensed operator.

One more practical point: in 2025 Quang Binh province merged into Quang Tri (vietnam.travel), so the park's own pages now give addresses as Phong Nha commune, Quang Tri province. Older maps and guides still say Quang Binh.

How many days should you spend in Phong Nha?

Two nights covers the show caves without rushing. Spend the first full day at Paradise Cave and the Dark Cave, and the second morning on the boat to Phong Nha Cave and Tien Son before you move on. Add a third night if you want a one-day trek with Oxalis, or a fourth for the overnight Hang En trip.

Which caves should you visit, and how?

If you only see one cave, make it Paradise Cave; if you see two, add the boat trip into Phong Nha Cave. The table uses the national park's published adult prices and Oxalis's tour prices, both checked on 2 October 2026.

Paradise Cave

Paradise Cave is the one to prioritise. A British Cave Research Association expedition found it in 2005, and the park's Paradise Cave page gives its length as 31.4 km, with chambers up to 150 m wide and, in places, 100 m high. Visitors see the first kilometer on wooden stairways. From the gate you walk or ride an electric car for 1.6 km through the forest, then walk about 500 m up to the entrance. The 270,000 VND adult ticket includes the electric car; children from 1.1 m to 1.3 m tall pay 145,000 VND, and smaller children go free. The park also lists a guided 7 km route deeper into the cave, as a day trip or an overnight.

Phong Nha Cave by boat

Phong Nha Cave is the classic trip, and the boat ride is half the point. According to the park, boats leave the tourism center in Phong Nha village and travel about 30 minutes up the Son River. At the cave mouth they cut the engine and are rowed along roughly 1,200 m of underground river, and on the way out you walk through two dry chambers on raised walkways. The whole cave is 7,729 m long, and a visit takes about 2.5 hours.

Tickets cost 150,000 VND per person, and the boat is charged separately at 700,000 VND per boat for the return trip, for up to 12 passengers. That makes the boat cheap for a group and expensive for a couple, so it pays to share: split four ways, it is 175,000 VND each. An English-speaking guide costs 400,000 VND for one cave. The cave opens from 7:15 to 16:30 in summer and from 7:30 to 15:45 in winter.

Tien Son Cave

Tien Son is a dry cave about 100 m above Phong Nha Cave, up nearly 600 steps from the boat landing. Visitors walk about 400 m of its 980 m, per the park's Tien Son page. The ticket is 80,000 VND, and a boat for both caves costs 750,000 VND instead of 700,000 VND.

The Dark Cave

The Dark Cave is the active option, not a sightseeing one. The park's Song Chay - Hang Toi page describes a 400 m zipline across the Chay River to the cave mouth, a wild cave known for experiences rather than formations, a natural mud bath inside, then kayaking and water games on the river. The full package costs 450,000 VND for adults and takes about four hours, and a 220,000 VND package skips the cave. Bring swimwear and a dry bag.

Can you visit Son Doong or Hang En?

Yes, but only on an expedition with Oxalis Adventure, which says it is currently the only operator licensed to run trips into Son Doong (Oxalis). The cave was discovered in 1990, and UNESCO cites it for the world's largest documented cave passage in terms of diameter and continuity.

The Son Doong expedition takes 6 days and 5 nights, for groups of up to 10 people aged 18 to 70, and runs from January to August. Oxalis prices it at 80,000,000 VND (US$3,000) per person, including VAT, a US$600 entrance and environmental fee and a US$20 national park management fee, and it requires fitness tests before you join. Demand far exceeds supply. DTiNews reported in March 2026 that visitor numbers are capped at about 1,000 a year and that 2026 and 2027 were fully booked, and Oxalis's own page now lists limited places for 2028.

Hang En is the realistic alternative for most people. Vietnam's tourism board calls it the third-largest cave in the world (vietnam.travel). The Oxalis Hang En trip lasts 2 days and 1 night with a camp inside the cave, for groups of up to 16 aged 16 to 70, from December to mid-September, at 9,500,000 VND (about US$358 on Oxalis's site). For a shorter taste, Oxalis's one-day treks to Hang Tien and Tu Lan cost 2,000,000 VND, and a Nuoc Nut cave day costs 2,150,000 VND.

Where should you stay in Phong Nha?

Stay in or near Phong Nha village, where the cave boats leave. Vietnam's tourism board describes the choice as hostels and humble riverside guesthouses in town, or homestays, farmstays and villas in the rice fields around it (vietnam.travel).

We found no reliable, recent traveler-reported average for room prices in Phong Nha, so compare current rates before you book. The tourism board notes that many hotels lend bicycles for free.

How do you get to Phong Nha?

Most travelers come through Dong Hoi, the nearest city with an airport and a railway station. Baolau lists Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet flights from Hanoi taking about an hour, and from Ho Chi Minh City about 1 hour 30 minutes (Baolau). By train, the SE3 leaves Hanoi at 19:20 and reaches Dong Hoi at 04:45, 9 hours 25 minutes, on Baolau's listing for 8 October 2026.

From Dong Hoi it is 38 km to Phong Nha. 12Go listed private cars from about $29, with the fastest trip about 45 minutes, and Vietnam's tourism board mentions local buses from 35,000 VND that take 45 to 90 minutes.

Direct buses also run from Hanoi in about 7 to 8 hours, from about $18 on 12Go, and from Hue in about 4 to 5 hours, from about $9 (12Go). Our Hue to Phong Nha guide compares the options from Hue, and Hanoi to Hue shows how Phong Nha splits the long trip between the two cities.

How do you get around Phong Nha?

Boats handle Phong Nha Cave; for Paradise Cave and the Dark Cave you need a hired motorbike, a taxi or a driver, and a bicycle works around the village. Before renting a motorbike, read the license rules on our getting around Vietnam page. The UK government warns that motorbike accidents are common and tells inexperienced riders not to hire one.

What safety issues are specific to Phong Nha?

Floods, remoteness and old ordnance are the Phong Nha-specific risks. Our Vietnam safety page covers the rest.

  • Floods close caves fast. On 7 October 2020 the park's tourism center stopped visits to Phong Nha and Tien Son caves, the 4,500 m Phong Nha route, the Dark Cave and Nuoc Mooc because the Son and Chay rivers were rising, Bao Van Hoa reported. The center also closes Phong Nha Cave and Paradise Cave's 7 km route when long rains are forecast (Bao Van Hoa, 2018), and Oxalis closes its tours from mid-September to the end of October (Oxalis FAQ).
  • Rescue takes time. Oxalis says its rescue teams can take from 30 minutes to 2 hours to reach a casualty in the remote terrain. The insurance it buys for guests pays at most 50,000,000 VND per case, and it recommends your own comprehensive cover.
  • Unexploded ordnance. The UK government warns that landmines and other unexploded weapons remain in former battlefields, especially in central Vietnam and along the Laos border once crossed by the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and that mined areas are often unmarked. Stay on marked paths and with your guide.

How much does Phong Nha cost?

Cave tickets are cheap; transport and adventure tours are the big costs. We converted at about 26,000 VND to US$1, between Vietcombank's published USD buying and selling rates (25,760 and 26,170) on 2 October 2026.

What food is worth seeking out in Phong Nha?

Eat the Quang Binh dishes, since this was Quang Binh until 2025. Vietjet's Quang Binh food guide leads with chao canh, a noodle soup of fresh rice-flour noodles in a pork-bone broth with local seafood, and nem lui, minced pork grilled on lemongrass or bamboo sticks. It also lists banh bot loc, chewy tapioca dumplings filled with shrimp and pork, and khoai deo, sun-dried sweet potato with a mild, nutty sweetness that packs well for the road.

When is the best time to visit Phong Nha?

March to August is the safest window, and autumn is the season to avoid. Phong Nha has no WMO-listed station, so the table uses normals for Ha Tinh, the nearest listed station, on the same coast to the north.

MonthsRain at Ha TinhIn Phong Nha
December to February54 to 181 mm a monthCool, with cold spells in the caves; Hang En trips restart in December
March to May70 to 166 mm a monthDrier; Vietnam's tourism board singles out April to June
June to August117 to 228 mm a monthHot; Oxalis suggests April to August for swimming in caves
September to November274 to 742 mm a monthWettest, with October at 742 mm; floods close caves

Vietnam's tourism board puts the rainy season at October to December and says the area can be prone to flooding (vietnam.travel), and the UK government notes seasonal flooding in central Vietnam in October and November. Son Doong only runs from January to August. For the national picture, see best time to visit Vietnam.

Key facts at a glance

  • Paradise Cave: 270,000 VND per adult with the electric car, 31.4 km long, the first 1 km on walkways (national park).
  • Phong Nha Cave: 150,000 VND per person plus 700,000 VND per boat for up to 12 (national park).
  • Son Doong: 80,000,000 VND (US$3,000), 6 days, only through Oxalis (Oxalis); 2026 and 2027 sold out (DTiNews).
  • Gateway: Dong Hoi, 38 km by road and about 45 minutes by car (12Go).

Limitations

Ticket prices come from the national park's pages as of 2 October 2026, and the park charges for boats per boat, not per person, so your share depends on your group. Oxalis's prices, seasons and availability are the operator's own and can change, and Son Doong places open up when other people cancel. The flood examples we cite are from 2018 and 2020; we found no official list of 2025 or 2026 closures. We found no recent independent average for hotel prices, and the 35,000 VND local bus fare comes from an undated tourism board page. From September to December, ask your hotel each evening which caves are open, keep a spare day and buy insurance that covers delays and adventure activities.
