Fly from Hanoi to Luang Prabang unless the overland journey is the reason you are going. The direct flight takes about an hour and costs from about US$132, while the cheapest overland packages save around US$70 and cost you a night on a sleeper bus plus most of the next day on mountain roads. If you do go overland, the hard part is not the bus but the visa: Laos's e-visa is not valid at any crossing from Vietnam, and the official list shows visa on arrival at only one of them.

How we built this guide: on 4 October 2026 we read flight and overland listings on 12Go for 21 and 22 October 2026, Baolau, The Sinh Tourist's schedule, Laos's official e-visa site and fee calculator, the Lao Department of Immigration's checkpoint list, and UK government travel advice. We did not travel the route. Fares appear as each site showed them, with conversions at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per US dollar when we checked.

How long is the flight, and what does it cost?

About an hour, and usually US$130 to US$180 one way. On 12Go for 21 October 2026, Vietnam Airlines' VN931 left Noi Bai at 13:10 and reached Luang Prabang at 14:15 for about US$132 (3,462,000 VND), and Lao Airlines' 19:10 flight arrived at 20:20 for about US$176 (4,608,000 VND). Baolau names the same two carriers and listed Lao Airlines' QV314 at 4,332,999 VND for 10 October. Connecting flights on Thai AirAsia took almost 6 hours and cost more.

Flying also solves the visa question. Laos's Department of Immigration shows both visa on arrival and the e-visa at Luang Prabang International Airport on its checkpoint list. Allow time for the ride to Noi Bai; our Noi Bai airport guide covers bus 86 and Grab.

How does the overland route via Dien Bien Phu work?

Most packages run in three legs: a night sleeper bus from Hanoi to Dien Bien Phu, a van across the Tay Trang to Sop Hun border, and the Laos-China Railway for the last stretch. You buy one ticket and change vehicles twice.

Which overland packages run, and how long do they take?

On 12Go for 21 October 2026, every package left Hanoi's My Dinh bus station between 20:00 and 21:00.

The Sinh Tourist lists its own Hanoi to Luang Prabang sleeping coach at 17:00, arriving at 18:00 the next day and timed at 24 hours, without naming the border it uses.

What did travelers report in 2026?

Expect the schedule to slip. Reviewers on 12Go in 2026 described a sleeper of about 12 hours to Dien Bien, then a van of around 8 hours to Muang Xai on a slow, badly surfaced road, then about an hour on the train. One said the trip took about 23 hours instead of 19 after waiting for a later train, and another arrived five hours behind schedule for the same reason. The same March 2026 review called the Tay Trang crossing smooth with the driver's help.

Can you do it yourself?

Yes, in stages. Hai Van's sleepers leave My Dinh between 18:00 and 20:30 and reach Dien Bien Phu bus station in about 9.5 to 10 hours for 492,000 to 816,000 VND (about US$19 to US$31) on 12Go, and Vietnam Airlines flies there in about an hour, at 1,087,000 VND on Baolau for 10 October. From Dien Bien, 12Go listed two morning vans to Muang Khua in Laos for 22 October: HT Travel at 06:30 for 450,000 VND and Asian Bus Travel at 07:00 for 437,500 VND. 12Go listed no onward trips from Muang Khua to Luang Prabang, so arrange the next leg locally and allow for a night on the way.

Watch out: the UK government says roads in Laos are often in poor condition, mountain terrain is prone to slides in the rainy season, and travel after dark sharply raises the accident risk (FCDO). It also warns that unexploded weapons remain a hazard, so keep to main routes.

Can you go via Vientiane and the Laos-China Railway?

Yes, and it is the smoothest way to add the capital. On 12Go for 21 October 2026, Vietnam Airlines flew Hanoi to Vientiane at 09:20, arriving 10:35, for about US$135 (3.52 million VND), and Lao Airlines at 16:20 for about US$190. Buses took about 15 to 24.5 hours, from 1,000,000 VND (about US$38).

From Vientiane, trains reach Luang Prabang in about 1 hour 46 minutes on the faster services and around 2 hours 40 minutes on slower ones, on most of 12Go's listings for 22 October 2026. The prices there are resellers' prices with their own markups, so compare before you buy. Wattay airport accepts the Lao e-visa, so this route works for e-visa holders who fly into Vientiane.

What about the Nam Can crossing?

It is open but not useful for most visitors. Nam Can, in Ky Son district of Nghe An, faces the Lao checkpoint of Nam Kan in Xiengkhouang province, which opens from 07:00 to 19:00 and shows neither visa on arrival nor the e-visa on Laos's checkpoint page. Use it only with a Lao visa from an embassy or a visa-exempt passport, the same preparation the Dien Bien Phu route needs.

Which Lao visa do you need, and where can you get it?

Most Western visitors need a visa, and where you can get it depends on how you enter.

The e-visa

Apply on laoevisa.gov.la only. Its fee calculator showed US$50 for passports from the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, India and Japan, and US$35 for China, excluding bank charges (Lao eVisa). Processing usually takes 3 working days, and you receive an approval letter that you exchange for a visa sticker on arrival. The information page lists nine ports: Wattay, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports, Friendship Bridges I, II and IV with Thailand, the Boten road checkpoint and Boten railway station on the China border, and Khamsavath railway station in Vientiane. The UK government adds that the e-visa is single entry and suggests applying at least 5 days ahead (FCDO).

Visa on arrival and visa-free entry

At the airports, yes; at the Vietnam border, mostly no. Laos's Department of Immigration lists ten international checkpoints on the Vietnam border, and on our check only Dansavan, opposite Lao Bao, showed visa on arrival (Lao immigration). Sop Hun, opposite Tay Trang, does not appear on the list at all. The most recent official fee notice we found, from June 2022, set visa on arrival at US$40 for most nationalities (Tourism Laos).

Some passports need no visa. Wikipedia's summary lists 30 days visa-free for citizens of Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei, Japan, South Korea and a few others, and 15 days for Switzerland and Luxembourg. Everyone else going overland should get a tourist visa from a Lao embassy or consulate before setting off, an option Laos's immigration department describes on its visa page.

The Lao Digital Immigration Form

Laos introduced a digital arrival and departure form on 1 September 2025 at Wattay, Luang Prabang and Pakse airports and Friendship Bridge I. The Department of Immigration asks foreigners to submit it at immigration.gov.la within 3 days before arrival and before departure.

What do you need to leave Vietnam?

A valid stamp and the right exit gate. Tay Trang and Nam Can are both on Vietnam's list of land gates for e-visa holders (lsvn.vn, on Resolution 127/NQ-CP), and the UK government warns that e-visas restrict you to the exit points you chose when applying (FCDO). A single-entry e-visa ends when you leave. Our Vietnam visa guide explains the multiple-entry option, and our routes from Hanoi cover the rest of the north.

Limitations

Fares and times are a snapshot of 12Go and Baolau listings read on 4 October 2026, and overland arrival times in particular are optimistic; 2026 reviewers reported delays of several hours. Package sellers did not always name the border they use, and we rely on traveler reviews for the Tay Trang and Muang Xai routing.

Visa information is the part to recheck. Laos's checkpoint list is the official source, but it does not show Sop Hun at all, and traveler reports describe crossings there, so ask your operator in writing which visa they expect you to hold. The visa-on-arrival fee comes from a 2022 notice, and the visa-exempt list comes from Wikipedia's summary rather than a Lao government page. Road conditions change with the rainy season and landslides, so check with your operator before you leave.
