The bus is the better Hanoi to Sapa choice for most travelers. It leaves from the Old Quarter, runs up the Noi Bai to Lao Cai expressway and drops you in Sapa town in 5.5 to 7 hours, from about $10. The night train is the comfortable alternative, but it stops at Lao Cai, below the mountains, so you add about an hour by road at dawn. A private car is the quickest door to door at about 5 hours, and the most expensive.
How we built this guide: we checked Vietnam Railways' official timetable and fare tables for 14 October 2026, bus, van, car and train listings on 12Go and Baolau on 2 October 2026, seat61's Hanoi to Lao Cai guide (updated 10 June 2026) and published notices on the expressway. We did not ride these services for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 2 October 2026. Where a site showed dollars, the VND figure is our conversion.
Which way from Hanoi to Sapa suits you?
Pick the bus for speed and price, the train for a proper bed, and a car if you are three or more and want to stop on the way. Our Sapa guide covers where to stay once you arrive.
| Mode | Time, Hanoi to Sapa | Price seen on 2 Oct 2026 | Comfort and safety | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sleeper or cabin bus | 5.5 to 7 hours | $10 to $23 (about 262,000 to 602,000 VND) on 12Go | Lie-flat berths or private cabins, one rest stop, winding final climb | Budget trips, flexible departure times |
| Limousine van | About 5 to 5.5 hours | From about $14 to $16 (about 366,000 to 419,000 VND) on 12Go | Reclining seats, fewer passengers | Day travel in a seat, not a berth |
| Night train plus road transfer | About 8 hours to Lao Cai, then about 1 hour by road | 475,000 to 801,000 VND (about $18 to $31) for Vietnam Railways berths; 1,000,000 to 1,800,000 VND (about $38 to $69) in private carriages | Real beds, toilets, room to walk; very early arrival | Saving a hotel night, families, anyone prone to carsickness |
| Private car | About 5 to 6 hours | $83 to $213 per vehicle (about 2.2 to 5.6 million VND) on 12Go | Door to door, stops when you want | Groups, heavy luggage |
How long does each option really take?
Plan on 5.5 to 7 hours by bus, about 5 hours by car, and about 9 hours door to door by train once you add the transfer.
Sleeper and cabin buses: 5.5 to 7 hours
The road is fast because of the 245 km Noi Bai to Lao Cai expressway, which opened on 21 September 2014 and was expected to cut Hanoi to Lao Cai driving time from seven hours to 3.5, according to Tuoi Tre News. Buses then leave the expressway and climb into the mountains, which is where the extra time goes.
For Wednesday 14 October 2026, 12Go listed more than 600 bus departures from $10. Examples: an Inter Bus Lines sleeper at 13:00 arriving 19:00 for $10, a Sao Viet single cabin at 10:30 arriving 16:30 for $18, and an HK Buslines cabin at 23:30 arriving 06:00 for $19. Limousine vans started at about $14 to $16, with a 07:40 van timed at about 5 hours 10 minutes.
Night train: about 8 hours to Lao Cai
Vietnam Railways' timetable for 14 October 2026 shows two overnight trains over the 294 km line: SP3 leaves Hanoi at 22:00 and reaches Lao Cai at 05:55, and SP7 leaves at 22:40 and arrives at 06:25. On some dates Baolau also listed a TK15 at 21:50 carrying private carriages. The train is slower than the bus, but you sleep through it.
From Lao Cai station it is about 38 km and 50 minutes up to Sapa, per seat61, which puts the regular bus at around 50,000 VND, a seat in a shared minibus at 40,000 to 100,000 VND and a private car at about $30. 12Go allows an hour to 90 minutes for the same leg, so expect to be in Sapa by about 07:00 to 08:00.
Private car: about 5 hours
12Go listed 39 car transfers for the same date. Private cars ran from $83 for a 3-seat car timed at 5.5 hours to $213 for a 9-seat limousine timed at 5 hours, and the fastest listing was 4 hours. A car is the only option that lets you stop for photos or a meal when you choose.
Are private train carriages worth the extra money?
Only if the decor and service matter to you, because they do not get you there faster. Companies such as Fanxipan Express, Sapaly Express, Laman Express, Chapa Express, King Sapa Train and New Livitrans run their own carriages hooked onto the same Vietnam Railways trains, so they leave and arrive at the same times. On Baolau for 14 October 2026 their berths ran from 1,000,000 VND (about $38) to 1,800,000 VND (about $69) for Tonkin Heritage Express.
Vietnam Railways' own fare table for SP3 listed 4-berth sleepers at 475,000 to 555,000 VND (about $18 to $21), a 2-berth compartment at 646,000 VND and a 2-berth VIP compartment at 801,000 VND. Seat61 suggests reading up before paying roughly twice the price for a private carriage. The catch is availability: Vietnam Railways' own berths showed as sold out on Baolau for both 7 and 14 October, while private carriages still had space.
Is the bus or the train more comfortable and safer?
The train is the calmer ride, and the bus is the more practical one. On a train you lie in a closed compartment, can walk to a toilet and arrive with no winding road until the transfer. 12Go notes the road to Sapa is winding in parts and suggests the train if you suffer from motion sickness.
Buses give you more departure times, including daytime runs with valley views. Some cabin buses list an onboard toilet on 12Go and many do not, so expect one rest stop. If a mountain road at night worries you, take a morning bus rather than an overnight one.
Tip: Traveling as a group of four on the train? Seat61 notes that Baolau shows a seat map for Vietnam Railways berths if you book more than 72 hours ahead, so you can take a whole compartment.
Where do buses and trains leave from and arrive?
Buses leave from company offices in Hanoi's Old Quarter, and trains leave from Hanoi Railway Station on Le Duan street.
- Buses from Hanoi: 12Go's listings showed departures from offices such as 70 Nguyen Huu Huan, 5 Tran Nguyen Han and 114 Tran Nhat Duat, and many companies offer pickup around Hoan Kiem Lake. Buses arrive at their own offices in Sapa, several of them on Dien Bien Phu street.
- Trains from Hanoi: trains go from Hanoi Railway Station at 120 Le Duan, per Baolau. Seat61 says Lao Cai trains use platforms 5 to 10, which you can reach from the main building on Le Duan or the second building on Tran Quy Cap street. Private carriage companies check in at one side or the other, so confirm which. SP3 also calls at Gia Lam station at 22:20.
- At Lao Cai: the station is on Khanh Yen street, and buses and minibuses to Sapa wait in the car park outside.
Tips for luggage and night travel
Pack for an early arrival and keep your bag small enough to manage on a sleeper.
- On buses, big bags go in the hold. Keep your passport, phone, cash, water and a warm layer with you in the berth.
- Baolau advises reaching the station 30 minutes before a train leaves and the bus office at least 60 minutes before a bus, because some companies shuttle passengers to the main bus.
- If you arrive at Lao Cai before 06:00, pre-book a transfer through your hotel or take the bus from the car park rather than haggling in the dark.
- Coming back for a night train, seat61 suggests leaving Sapa around 17:00 to 17:30 to allow for delays on the road down.
Going the other way: Sapa to Hanoi
The return has one advantage: a daytime train. Vietnam Railways' Lao Cai to Hanoi timetable for 14 October 2026 lists SP8 leaving Lao Cai at 12:05 and reaching Hanoi at 19:37, and the overnight SP4 leaving at 21:30 and arriving at 05:35. Buses run back through the day and evening. For other trips out of the capital, see our routes from Hanoi and the wider guide to getting around Vietnam.

Limitations
These figures are a snapshot of listings checked on 2 October 2026 for trips on 7 and 14 October, and they will move. Bus prices vary by company and class, private-carriage fares change with demand, and Vietnam Railways' own berths can sell out well ahead. Timetables also change: seat61's June 2026 page still showed an SP1 at 21:35, while the current Vietnam Railways timetable lists SP3 and SP7, so check the official timetable on dsvn.vn before you book.
Tet is the hardest time to travel. Vietnam Railways opened Tet 2027 ticket sales on 5 September 2026 for a holiday travel period from 23 January to 25 February 2027, per Bao Lao Cai. Expect sell-outs on trains and buses around those weeks.
Weather can close the line or the road. Vietnam's tourism authority describes June to August as Sapa's stormy season (Vietnam National Authority of Tourism), and in September 2024 a typhoon (storm No. 3) forced the cancellation of SP4 because of landslides and flooding on the line, per Bao Lao Cai. The expressway widening may also slow traffic on the Yen Bai to Lao Cai section while work continues. Before you go, check the weather, your operator's pickup address and the current timetable.
