Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat is about 310 km by road (Vexere lists 314 km, The Sinh Tourist 310 km), and the road into the highlands still has no continuous expressway. That is why flying wins clearly on time here: 55 minutes in the air against 6 to 9 hours by bus. If you prefer the road, a daytime limousine or cabin bus is the comfortable budget pick, and a private car shaves an hour or two.
How we built this guide: we checked fares and timetables on 12Go and Vexere and The Sinh Tourist's published schedule on 2 October 2026, using 12Go's flight results for 14 October 2026, plus 2025 and 2026 news reports on the Dau Giay to Lien Khuong expressway. We did not ride these services for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 2 October 2026. Where a site showed dollars, the VND figure is our conversion.

On 12Go, FUTA's VIP cabin coach was timed at 8 hours for about $16.79 (about 439,000 VND), Binh Minh Tai Limousine's 22-cabin coach at 7 hours 30 minutes for about $19, and the quickest limousine sleeper, Dien Linh's, at 6 hours 15 minutes for about $13. Some services stretched to nearly 9 hours. The Sinh Tourist schedules an 08:30 day bus that arrives at 15:00 and a 22:00 night bus that arrives at 05:00, and allows 8 hours in the other direction.
How long does a private car take, and has a new expressway opened?
A private car takes about 4.75 to 6.5 hours, because only part of the route is expressway. 12Go listed cars from about $101 to $165 per vehicle (about 2.64 to 4.32 million VND), timed from 4 hours 45 minutes for an SUV from Tan Son Nhat airport to 6 hours 20 minutes from the city centre.
Cars use the Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh to Dau Giay expressway, open since 2015 per Wikipedia's expressway table, then continue on the older highway through the tea and coffee town of Bao Loc, as 12Go's route notes describe. The planned expressway on to Lien Khuong is still being built in stages. In August 2025, Saigon Times reported the first section, Dau Giay to Tan Phu, as due for completion in 2026 and operation in 2027. In August 2026, Tuoi Tre reported the 66 km Tan Phu to Bao Loc section with only about 30 percent of its land handed over and completion targeted for the fourth quarter of 2027. We found no report of any section of the planned Dau Giay to Lien Khuong expressway opening by October 2026.

Where do buses leave from in Saigon and arrive in Da Lat?
Buses leave from bus stations and from company offices across the city, so check the exact pickup point on your ticket. Vexere showed Phuong Trang leaving from Mien Tay bus station and arriving at Da Lat bus station, Dien Linh Limousine from a District 9 office and Dieu Hoa from a Binh Thanh office. On 12Go, Binh Minh Tai Limousine left from 119 Nguyen Cu Trinh and arrived at A5 KQH Pham Hong Thai in Da Lat.
If you fly, you land at Lien Khuong, south of the city. Our Da Lat guide covers the city itself. For what to see before you leave, see our Ho Chi Minh City guide, and for other trips from the city, routes from Ho Chi Minh City.
Day bus, night bus or flight: what about comfort and safety?
A morning bus or a flight is the calmer choice. Night coaches arrive in the small hours, The Sinh Tourist's at 05:00, and the UK government's travel advice warns that bus and coach crashes are more likely at night and that tired night drivers keep driving. It also flags petty theft on buses and trains, so keep your passport and phone on your body, not in the luggage hold.
Da Lat sits about 1,500 m above sea level, per Wikipedia. A 5:00 arrival there is likely to feel cold after Saigon, so keep a warm layer in your day bag. For luggage on flights, check the fare: budget fares may leave out checked bags, as VietJet's did on our check. If you are heading on to the coast, our Nha Trang to Da Lat guide covers the Khanh Le Pass and its current night closure.
Tip: If you want the road but not the night, take a bus leaving between 06:00 and 08:30. You arrive in mid-afternoon with daylight to find your hotel.

Limitations
Fares and timetables were checked on 2 October 2026, with flight results for 14 October 2026, and they change often. Booking sites show partner prices, and our dollar and dong conversions are approximate. Confirm flight times with the airline for your date.
Expressway timelines in Vietnam often slip. Our statement that no section of the new expressway had opened is based on the latest reports we found, dated August 2026. If a section opens, car times will drop first, as they have elsewhere in the country.
Tet falls on 6 February 2027, per Wikipedia's Tet date table, and Vietnam Railways' Tet timetable runs from 23 January to 25 February 2027, per its announcement. There is no train to Da Lat, but buses and flights in that window are likely to fill early and cost more. We found no published 2027 surcharge.
The UK government lists June to September as the rainy season in the south, and landslides can block mountain roads in heavy rain. Allow extra time on the climb to Da Lat in those months, and see getting around Vietnam for other options.
