Fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc unless the journey itself is the point. Nonstop flights take about an hour and started at about 688,000 VND on Baolau for 8 October 2026. The overland alternative, a sleeper bus to Ha Tien or Rach Gia and then a speedboat across, takes 9 to 10 hours door to door on paper and saved less than 200,000 VND on the same day. It does show you the Mekong Delta and the coast on the way, and it works when flights sell out.

How we built this guide: on 2 October 2026 we checked flight, bus and ferry listings on Baolau for Thursday 8 October 2026 and on 12Go for Wednesday 14 October 2026, Phu Quoc Express's own site, Green SM's island taxi prices, 2025 and 2026 reports on Tan Son Nhat's terminals, and weather guidance from Vietnam's tourism authority and the Australian government. We did not make the trip for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 2 October 2026. Where a site showed dollars, the VND figure is our conversion.

Which way from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc suits you?

Fly for time and nearly the same money, and go overland only if you want the ride or a stop on the coast. Our Phu Quoc guide covers where to stay on the island.

How long does each option really take?

Plan on about an hour in the air plus your airport time, or 9 to 10 hours or more overland.

By air: about an hour in the air

On Baolau for 8 October 2026, nine nonstop flights by VietJet and Vietnam Airlines left between 08:05 and 20:30, timed at 55 minutes to 1 hour 5 minutes. The cheapest was VietJet's VJ331 at 17:20 for 687,621 VND, and Vietnam Airlines fares ran from 858,181 VND. On 12Go for 14 October 2026, 48 flights started at $25 (about 654,000 VND), including Sun PhuQuoc Airways' 9G1969 at 11:35 for $29 and Vietnam Airlines' VN1827 at 13:05, timed at 55 minutes. Baolau also names Bamboo Airways and Pacific Airlines on the route.

Check which terminal you need before you leave for the airport. By January 2026, Vietnam Airlines, Bamboo Airways, Vietravel Airlines and Sun PhuQuoc Airways flew domestic routes from Terminal 3 and VietJet from Terminal 1, per Tap chi Kinh te Tai chinh. Our Tan Son Nhat airport guide covers the ride from the center.

Via Ha Tien: the shortest sea crossing

FUTA Bus Lines (Phuong Trang) runs sleepers from Mien Tay bus station to Ha Tien bus station in 8 hours for 300,000 VND, with ten departures from 07:00 to 23:58 on Baolau for 8 October 2026. From Ha Tien port, Superdong speedboats left at 06:10, 10:00 and 13:15, took 1 hour 15 minutes and cost 225,818 VND on Baolau. Phu Quoc Express lists the same crossing at 1 hour 30 minutes on its site.

On paper, the 21:10 bus reaches Ha Tien at 05:10, in time for the 06:10 boat, which lands at 07:25. You still need to get from the bus station to the port, and that leaves little margin if the bus runs late, so the 10:00 boat is the safer target.

Via Rach Gia: a shorter bus, a longer boat

FUTA's buses from Mien Tay to Rach Soi bus station in Rach Gia took 5 hours 45 minutes for 260,000 VND, with 18 departures listed for 8 October 2026 on Baolau. Rach Soi is about 7 km southeast of Rach Gia's center according to 12Go's route notes, so budget a taxi to the pier. Superdong boats left Rach Gia port at 07:10, 10:30 and 13:10, took 2 hours 30 minutes and cost 324,000 VND on Baolau. A 01:45 bus arriving at 07:30 lines up with the 10:30 boat.

Tip: Since the 2025 provincial mergers, Kien Giang province, which included Rach Gia, Ha Tien and Phu Quoc, has been part of a merged An Giang province, per vietnam.travel. Tickets and maps may show either name.

Where do buses and boats leave from and arrive?

Buses leave from Mien Tay bus station on the western side of Ho Chi Minh City, and all the boats we found land at Bai Vong port.

  • Mien Tay bus station: 395 Kinh Duong Vuong, per Baolau. Allow a long taxi ride from the old District 1, and arrive 30 to 60 minutes before departure, as Baolau advises for buses.
  • Ha Tien: buses arrive at Ha Tien bus station on National Highway 80, and boats leave from the port on Kim Du street.
  • Rach Gia: buses arrive at Rach Soi bus station at 12 Mai Thi Hong Hanh, and boats leave from Rach Gia port on Nguyen Cong Tru street.
  • On Phu Quoc: boats arrive at Bai Vong port at Ham Ninh, on the island's east side, while flights land at Phu Quoc International Airport.

How do you get from the airport or port to your hotel?

By taxi or app car, booked before you walk out. Green SM's airport price list for Phu Quoc charges 206,000 VND (about $7.90) for up to 18 km between the airport and the south of the island, and 400,000 VND (about $15) for up to 35 km on its standard airport package. If your hotel is on the west coast, landing at Bai Vong means a cross-island ride, so arrange a pickup through your hotel if you arrive by boat.

What about luggage, weather and sea conditions?

Pack for a 20 kg limit if you take the boat, and avoid the sea route in stormy months.

  • Luggage: Phu Quoc Express allows up to 20 kg of free baggage and charges for excess, and the ID you board with must match your ticket, per its FAQ. Airline allowances depend on your fare, so check whether checked bags are included before you compare prices.
  • Seasons: Vietnam's tourism authority describes December to April as the south's dry season and May to November as its rainy season, per vietnam.travel.
  • Storms: Baolau warns that the Rach Gia and Ha Tien ferries may be interrupted in the storm season from July to October. Smartraveller, updated on 24 September 2026, says the country's storm season usually runs from June to November and can disrupt flights and roads too.

Watch out: If you are prone to seasickness, the 1 hour 15 minute Ha Tien crossing is the gentler bet than the 2 hour 30 minute run from Rach Gia, simply because it is shorter.

Going the other way: Phu Quoc to Ho Chi Minh City

The same choice applies in reverse. Flights back to Tan Son Nhat take about an hour. By sea, boats run back to Rach Gia and Ha Tien, per Baolau, and from either town you pick up a bus back to Mien Tay. For other trips south and west of the city, see our routes from Ho Chi Minh City and the Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho guide.

Limitations

Fares and schedules here are a snapshot of listings checked on 2 October 2026 for 8 and 14 October, and airfares in particular move daily and climb around holidays. Baolau showed only Superdong boats on the dates we checked, although it says Phu Quoc Express also runs both crossings, so compare both operators. The 12Go combined ticket's 14 hour 30 minute timing is the listing's own figure and may include waiting time.

The Rach Soi to port distance comes from 12Go's route notes, not a map we measured, and the overnight connections we describe are timetable arithmetic, not a tested trip. Sea crossings can be cancelled at short notice in rough weather, so check with the operator the day before and keep a spare day in the storm season.
