Hoi An to Nha Trang is a long haul of about 515 to 530 km by road (Daytrip lists 515 km, The Sinh Tourist 530 km). Fly from Da Nang if your days are short, take the train from Da Nang if you want comfort on a budget, and take the overnight sleeper bus if you want the cheapest ticket that leaves from Hoi An itself. If none of those appeal, stop a night in Quy Nhon and do it in two daytime rides.
How we built this guide: we checked fares and timetables on 12Go, Vexere and Daytrip and The Sinh Tourist's published schedule on 2 October 2026, using 12Go's listings for 14 October 2026 where it needed a travel date, plus 2026 news reports on the North-South expressway. We did not ride these services for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 2 October 2026. Where a site showed dollars, the VND figure is our conversion.
What is the fastest way from Hoi An to Nha Trang?
Flying from Da Nang to Cam Ranh is fastest. On 12Go for 14 October 2026, the only direct option was Vietnam Airlines flight VN1941, leaving Da Nang at 18:00 and landing at Cam Ranh at 19:15, for about $45 (about 1.18 million VND). Every other result connected through another city and took 4 hours or more.
The flight is only part of the day. Hoi An to Da Nang is 29 km, about 40 minutes by car, per Daytrip, and Cam Ranh airport sits about 30 km from central Nha Trang, per Wikipedia. Add check-in time and our rough estimate is 4 to 5 hours door to door, still far quicker than any road or rail option.
How long do sleeper buses take now?
Plan on 8 to 11 hours by sleeper or cabin bus. On 2 October 2026, Vexere listed 11 companies and 43 daily departures, with an average of 9.2 hours and fares from 266,000 to 800,000 VND (about $10 to $31). Its cheapest was Hanh Cafe - Ha Phuong Limousine at 266,000 VND on an 18:00 departure. Viet Lao (Da Nang) charged 450,000 VND and HK Buslines 650,000 VND.
The Sinh Tourist's open bus leaves Hoi An at 18:15 and arrives at 05:00, a 10 hour 45 minute night. On 12Go, the quickest coach was Viet Lao Bus's 22-cabin service, timed at 7 hours 45 minutes for about $27 (about 707,000 VND), while most other sleepers ran 9 to 13 hours for $13 to $38.
What changed on the expressway in 2026?
The eastern North-South expressway is now complete between Quang Ngai and Nha Trang, and that mostly helps cars. VOV reported that the 88 km Quang Ngai to Hoai Nhon section opened on 29 April 2026, with a 90 km/h limit for cars and 80 km/h for sleeper buses, per VOV. The Chi Thanh to Van Phong section, one of the last links north of Nha Trang, was set to open in full on 19 May 2026, per Bao Xay Dung. The Vietnamese Wikipedia expressway table dates the other sections between 1 January and 18 May 2026.
The result shows in car times. 12Go timed one private car at about 6 hours 50 minutes for $282 per vehicle (about 7.38 million VND), while Daytrip still quoted 9 hours 30 minutes, from $90 per person, with optional sightseeing stops. Sleeper buses run slower, often make rest stops and pick up along the way, so their times have not fallen as far.
Is the train worth it when Hoi An has no station?
Yes, if comfort matters more than the extra transfer. The North-South line does not pass through Hoi An, so you start at Da Nang station, about 40 minutes away by road. On 12Go for 14 October 2026, the fastest train took 9 hours 6 minutes, leaving Da Nang at 13:29 and arriving at 22:35 with soft seats for about $23 (about 602,000 VND). An overnight train left at 22:30 and arrived at 08:40, with six-berth sleepers and other classes from about $25 to $36 (about 654,000 to 942,000 VND). The SE21 with a Hana Train VIP four-berth car took 11 hours 23 minutes for about $86 (about 2.25 million VND).
12Go also sells a train-plus-van package from Hoi An for about $65 (about 1.7 million VND) if you would rather book one ticket. Trains have toilets and room to stretch, which a bunk on a bus does not.
Should you break the trip in Quy Nhon?
A night in Quy Nhon turns one long haul into two easy daytime rides. On 12Go, buses from Hoi An to Quy Nhon took about 4 hours 45 minutes to 7 hours for $13 to $30. Trains from Da Nang reach Dieu Tri, the main-line station for Quy Nhon, in 5.5 to about 6.25 hours from about $12, per 12Go's train results.
The second leg is shorter. Buses from Quy Nhon to Nha Trang took about 3.5 to 5 hours for $9 to $25 on 12Go, and The Sinh Tourist schedules 4 hours for the 215 km in the other direction. Quy Nhon now sits in Gia Lai province after the 2025 provincial mergers, as the Vietnamese Wikipedia expressway article reflects, so booking sites may show either the old or the new province.

Where do you board and get off?
Sleeper buses leave from company offices in Hoi An and finish at offices or the bus station in Nha Trang. 12Go listings on 2 October 2026 started at 255 Nguyen Tat Thanh in Hoi An and ended at operator offices or the Nha Trang New Southern Bus Station. Some recent reviewers on 12Go's Da Nang to Nha Trang page say they had to arrange a separate transfer from an outer drop-off point, so ask before you pay.
By train you board at Da Nang station. By air you fly from Da Nang International Airport, which 12Go's travel notes place close to the city centre, and land at Cam Ranh, about 30 km south of the city. For the city end of the trip, see our Nha Trang guide, routes from Hoi An and Da Nang and routes from Nha Trang.
What should you know about night travel, comfort and luggage?
Night buses save a hotel night but carry more risk. The UK government's travel advice warns that bus and coach crashes are more likely at night and that tired night drivers sometimes keep going. It also flags petty theft on buses and trains, especially while people sleep on overnight trains, so keep valuables on your body.
Daytrip includes one suitcase and one carry-on per passenger. On sleeper buses and budget flights, check the baggage rules in the listing before you book, since cheaper fares can leave out checked bags. If you are heading on to the highlands, our Nha Trang to Da Lat guide covers the next leg.

Limitations
Fares and timetables were checked on 2 October 2026, with 12Go searches for 14 October 2026, and they change often. Booking sites show partner prices, and our dollar and dong conversions are approximate. Flight schedules on this route are thin, so check the airline's own site for your date.
Tet falls on 6 February 2027, per Wikipedia's Tet date table. Vietnam Railways opened sales on 5 September 2026 for its Tet timetable from 23 January to 25 February 2027, per its announcement. Expect trains, buses and flights in that window to sell out and cost more. We found no published bus surcharge.
The UK government puts typhoon season at May to November and central Vietnam's rainy season at October to December, with floods most likely in October and November. Storms can delay or cancel buses, trains and flights on this coast, so keep a spare day in those months.
The new expressway times are recent. Bus operators may not have updated their schedules yet, so the hours above may fall further. Our door-to-door flight estimate is our own arithmetic, not an airline figure. See getting around Vietnam for how these modes compare across the country.
