Hue and Hoi An sit about 120 to 130 km apart by road (Daytrip lists 122 km, The Sinh Tourist 130 km), with the Hai Van Pass in the middle. The quick, cheap way is a tourist bus or limousine van through the Hai Van tunnels in about 3 to 4 hours. The memorable way is over the pass itself, by private car with stops or on the back of an Easy Rider motorbike, which turns a transfer into most of a day.
How we built this guide: we checked Vietnam Railways' heritage-train timetable, The Sinh Tourist's published bus schedule, and fares on Vexere, 12Go and Daytrip on 2 October 2026, plus Da Nang's official tourism site on the pass and the tunnel rules. We did not ride these services for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 2 October 2026. Where a site showed dollars, the VND figure is our conversion.
Which way from Hue to Hoi An suits you?
Pick the bus for price, a car for comfort and flexible stops, and a motorbike tour if the ride is the reason you came. If you are still planning the ends of the trip, our Hue guide and Hoi An guide cover where to stay and what to see.
| Mode | Time, Hue to Hoi An | Price seen on 2 Oct 2026 | Comfort and safety | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tourist bus or limousine van (tunnel) | 3 to 4 hours | 170,000 to 650,000 VND (about $6.50 to $25) on Vexere | Fixed stops, reclining seats or cabins | Budget trips, heavy bags |
| Private car, no stops (tunnel) | About 2 hours 40 minutes | $44 to $153 per car (about 1.15 to 4 million VND) on 12Go | Door to door, air-conditioned | Families and small groups |
| Private car over the pass with stops | About 3.5 hours or more | From $24 per person (about 628,000 VND) on Daytrip, before stops | You set the pace, sit in comfort | Seeing the pass without riding |
| Easy Rider motorbike tour | A full day | $65 to $75 per person (about 1.7 to 2 million VND) | Open to sun, rain and traffic | The classic Hai Van ride |
| Train to Da Nang, then car | 2.5 to 3.75 hours on the train, plus about 40 minutes by road | 79,000 to 265,000 VND (about $3 to $10) for the train, plus the transfer | Seats, toilets, coastal views | Rail fans and a slow day |
How long does each option really take?
Allow 3 to 4 hours on a bus, under 3 hours in a car that takes the tunnel, and most of a day if you go over the pass.
Bus and limousine van
The Sinh Tourist schedules a 07:30 departure that arrives at 11:30 and a 13:15 departure that arrives at 16:45. On 2 October 2026, Vexere counted 27 companies and 325 daily trips, with an average of about 3.4 hours and fares from 170,000 to 650,000 VND. On 12Go, a 28-seat VIP limousine coach was timed at 3 hours for $12 (about 314,000 VND), and 9 and 11-seat limousine vans at about 3.5 hours for around $18.
Private car
Daytrip times its 122 km door-to-door transfer at 2 hours 40 minutes without stops. Its Hai Van Pass stop is listed as 45 minutes, so a car that climbs the pass and pauses at the top lands closer to 3.5 hours, longer with a swim or lunch at Lang Co.
Easy Rider motorbike
This is a full-day trip. Local Vietnam's version costs $75 per person, picks up at 8:00 in central Hue, puts you behind an English-speaking driver, and stops at Lap An Lagoon, Lang Co Beach, the pass and the Marble Mountains, with lunch and your luggage sent ahead by van. Southeast Asia Backpacker starts from $65 per person and also offers a self-ride option.
Train plus road
Regular SE trains take about 2 hours 32 minutes to 2 hours 44 minutes to Da Nang, with fares from about 79,000 to 163,000 VND on Vexere's train listing for 2 October 2026. The heritage train is slower: HĐ1 leaves Hue at 07:05 and arrives at 10:10, and HĐ3 leaves at 14:30 and arrives at 18:15, both stopping at Lang Co, per Vietnam Railways. From Da Nang station you still need about 40 minutes by road for the 29 km to Hoi An, per Daytrip. Our Da Nang to Hoi An guide covers that leg.
Is the Hai Van Pass worth the detour?
Yes on a clear day, but only if your car or bike actually goes over it. Da Nang's tourism portal, Da Nang Fantasticity, describes a pass of about 20 to 21 km that climbs to around 500 m, roughly 20 km north of central Da Nang and 80 km south of Hue. At the top stands the Hai Van Gate, a fortress built in 1826 under Emperor Minh Mang, and the north side looks down on Lang Co Bay.
The tunnels are why most bus passengers never see any of this. Hai Van Tunnel 2, 6.2 km long, opened beside the original tunnel on 11 January 2021, per Viet Nam News. Motorbikes are not allowed inside, so riders take the old pass road or a bike shuttle. Buses and standard transfers use the tunnels, which is why Daytrip sells the pass as an add-on stop.
Tip: If you want the views but not the motorbike, book a car with the Hai Van stop for the morning. You reach the top before the midday heat and still check in at Hoi An by early afternoon.
Where do buses and trains leave from and arrive?
Most tourist buses pick up at offices on or near Le Loi and Nguyen Thai Hoc streets in Hue and drop at company offices on the edge of Hoi An, not at a bus station. Listings on 12Go on 2 October 2026 started from 45 Le Loi and from 17, 19 and 37B Nguyen Thai Hoc, and ended at addresses such as 134 and 190 Ton Duc Thang, 32 Nguyen Phan Vinh and 320 Ly Thuong Kiet in Hoi An. On Vexere, one operator ran from Vincom Plaza Hue to 44 Cao Hong Lanh. Ask whether hotel pickup and drop-off are included before you pay.
Trains leave from Hue station and terminate your rail leg at Da Nang station, because the North-South line does not pass through Hoi An. 12Go sells a train-plus-van combination for about $18 (about 471,000 VND) if you want one booking.
How do comfort, safety and luggage compare?
Daytime travel by bus, car or train is the comfortable middle ground, and night buses are not worth it for a trip this short. 12Go lists cabin buses leaving Hue after midnight for about $7.70, but the UK government's travel advice warns that bus crashes are more likely at night and that tired night drivers keep driving.
On two wheels, the same advice says motorbike travel in Vietnam is much riskier than at home, helmets are compulsory, and riding yourself needs the 1968 international driving permit, your home license and third-party insurance. On an Easy Rider tour a local driver rides and you sit behind.
For luggage, Daytrip includes one suitcase and one carry-on per passenger. Local Vietnam sends bags by van, and Southeast Asia Backpacker carries one piece per person. On buses, keep passports and phones on you, since the UK advice flags petty theft on buses and trains.

Limitations
Fares and timetables on this page were checked on 2 October 2026 and move often. Booking sites show partner prices, and our dollar and dong conversions are approximate.
Tet, the Lunar New Year, falls on 6 February 2027, per Wikipedia's Tet date table. Vietnam Railways opened sales for its Tet timetable, covering 23 January to 25 February 2027, on 5 September 2026, per its announcement. Expect full buses and higher prices in that window. We found no published bus surcharge for 2027, so compare before you pay.
The UK government lists October to December as central Vietnam's rainy season, with floods most likely in October and November. Storms can close the pass, as the October 2023 landslide did, while the tunnels stay open. Check the forecast before you book a pass tour.
Our point that standard buses use the tunnels is based on how operators sell the pass as an optional stop. Ask your operator if it matters to you. Easy Rider prices come from two operators only.
