A limousine van with an Old Quarter pickup is the easiest way from Hanoi to both valleys. Vans reach Mai Chau in about 3 to 3.5 hours and Pu Luong in about 4 to 4.5 hours, and many drop you at your homestay or lodge. A private car takes about the same time and makes sense for three or four people. Between the two valleys, a shared or private car covers the 42 km in 1 to 2 hours.

How we built this guide: we checked van, bus and car listings on Baolau for 9 October 2026 and on 12Go for 14 October 2026, plus press reports on the Thung Khe pass and the new expressway, all on 3 October 2026. We did not ride these services for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar, checked on 3 October 2026. Where a site showed dollars, the VND figure is our conversion.

Limousine vans and buses to Mai Chau

For Wednesday 14 October 2026, 12Go listed 195 trips, with buses from about $6 and vans from about $11. Daiichi Travel's limousine left Hanoi Opera House at 06:45, 07:00, 09:45, 10:00 and 13:30 and reached a lodge in Mai Chau in 3 hours 30 minutes for $15 (about 393,000 VND). 12Go's general timetable showed 9-seat vans from operators such as Mai Chau Smile and Phuong Ha Limousine taking about 2 hours 30 minutes, for about $8.50 to $10.

On Baolau for Friday 9 October, Huong Kien Limousine left Hoan Kiem at 07:00 and reached Mai Chau at 10:05 for 250,000 VND (about $9.55). Baolau describes its vans as seven-seaters with one extra seat beside the driver, and says most vans leave from company offices in the Old Quarter and finish at company offices in Mai Chau.

Vans and buses to Pu Luong

Baolau listed three Expats Way Travel vans for 9 October: 06:45 for 360,000 VND, and 07:00 and 13:30 for 400,000 VND, each taking 4 hours 30 minutes and finishing at company offices in the former Ba Thuoc district. On 12Go for 14 October, Lan Anh Limousine's van left Hanoi Opera House at 07:00 and 13:30 and took 4 hours for $14 (about 366,000 VND), and King Express Bus left 19 Hang Thiec at 06:30 and reached a Pu Luong inn at 11:00 for $14. 12Go counted about 10 departures a day, all between 06:20 and 13:30, so there is no late-evening option.

Private car

Private cars take about 3 hours 30 minutes to Mai Chau and about 4 hours to Pu Luong. On 12Go for 14 October, a car for up to three people to Mai Chau cost about 1.74 million VND (about $66), and an SUV for five from the Old Quarter about 1.87 million VND (about $71). To Pu Luong, the cheapest car was 1.8 million VND (about $69) for 4 hours, while the other listings we saw cost about 3.6 to 3.7 million VND.

What is the road like, and where is the Thung Khe pass?

The drive runs west out of Hanoi to Hoa Binh, then climbs Highway 6 over the Thung Khe pass before the turn into the Mai Chau valley. A 2024 VnExpress guide describes the main route as the Hoa Lac expressway to Hoa Binh, then Highway 6. Vietnamese Wikipedia places the pass between the old Tan Lac and Mai Chau districts, about 12 km before the Tong Dau junction, where Highway 15 turns off to Mai Chau.

Its other name, Da Trang or White Rock pass, comes from limestone that slid down the slopes when the road was cut, Bao Lao Cai reports, and a small roadside market at the top looks over the valley. Vendors there sell corn and bamboo-tube rice, per Tuoi Tre. Fog is the main hazard: Bao Lao Cai notes that evening fog makes the pass hard to drive, and Tuoi Tre describes winter fog as a nightmare for drivers.

Watch out: if you ride a motorbike, cross the pass in daylight and dry weather. The UK government calls motorbike travel in Vietnam much riskier than in the UK.

Will a new expressway make it faster?

Not in 2026. A Hoa Binh to Moc Chau expressway is under construction, and its 32.3 km Son La section is targeted for completion before 31 December 2027, Doanh nghiep Hoi nhap reported in June 2026. Until it opens, vans and cars use Highway 6 as above.

How do you get between Mai Chau and Pu Luong?

Book a shared or private car; the valleys are about 42 km apart. For 14 October 2026, 12Go listed nine trips, all leaving between 11:30 and 17:00. A shared car from Mai Chau homestays left at 11:30 and reached a Pu Luong resort an hour later for $19 per person (about 497,000 VND), and a private car for up to three people took about 1 hour 30 minutes from $34 per vehicle (about 890,000 VND). The cheapest option, at $10, was timed at 2 hours.

One recent reviewer on that page found the sedan too small for four adults, so book a larger car if you are a group with luggage. Note that the two valleys now sit in different provinces, Phu Tho and Thanh Hoa, after the 2025 mergers, so booking sites may list Pu Luong under Thanh Hoa and Mai Chau under either Hoa Binh or Phu Tho.

Where do vans leave from and arrive?

Most vans start in the Old Quarter, and many deliver you to your door at the other end.

  • Pickups in Hanoi: company offices in Hoan Kiem district, per Baolau, and meeting points such as Hanoi Opera House and 19 Hang Thiec on 12Go. Some operators collect from hotels.
  • Coaches: My Dinh, Giap Bat and Yen Nghia bus stations, per VnExpress.
  • Arrivals: company offices in Mai Chau or the former Ba Thuoc district, or named lodges and homestays. Check whether your lodging is on the drop-off list before you pay.
  • From the airport: a private car from Noi Bai took 3 hours 40 minutes for about 2.4 million VND on 12Go. For the bus into town instead, see Noi Bai to the Old Quarter.

Tips for timing, luggage and reliability

Leave in the morning, and confirm the details the day before.

  • Baolau asks passengers to reach the departure point 30 to 60 minutes early, as some companies shuttle passengers to the main vehicle.
  • Seven-seat vans have little luggage space, so mention a large suitcase when you book.
  • Read recent reviews. On 12Go in September 2026, one Pu Luong passenger reported several changes of vehicle, a delay of nearly three hours and a driver asking for extra money, and one Mai Chau passenger said the driver asked extra for a hotel pickup. Agree on pickup and drop-off points in writing.
  • Avoid driving in heavy rain. Vietnam's tourism authority warns that monsoon rains from June to August can flood local roads.

Going the other way: back to Hanoi

Vans run back through the morning and afternoon. On 12Go for 14 October 2026, Daiichi Travel left Mai Chau at 09:30, 11:00 and 16:00 and reached Hanoi Opera House in 3 hours 30 minutes for 403,200 VND, with the cheapest vans from 287,500 VND. From Pu Luong, Lan Anh Limousine left at 07:30 and reached Hanoi Opera House at 11:30 for 375,000 VND, and King Express Bus left at 13:00 and reached 19 Hang Thiec at 17:30 for 364,000 VND. If Ninh Binh is your next stop, compare the trip from Hanoi on Hanoi to Ninh Binh, and see every route out of the capital on Starting from Hanoi.

Limitations

Prices and times are listings seen on 3 October 2026 for travel on 9 and 14 October, and they change with dates, demand and vehicle class. 12Go's general timetable is not tied to one date, and booking sites show partner prices with fees added at checkout. Coach fares come from a 2024 guide and may have risen. Road times assume normal traffic; leaving Hanoi at rush hour or crossing the pass in fog adds time. Tet is the busiest period of the year, and in the rainy months, May to September, landslides and floods can close mountain roads at short notice, as the UK government's travel advice warns. Before you go, confirm your pickup point, your drop-off and the vehicle size, and check the forecast. For the wider picture, see getting around Vietnam.
