A limousine van with Old Quarter pickup is the easiest way from Hanoi to Ninh Binh. It takes about 2 to 3 hours, and many vans drop you in Tam Coc or at your hotel. The train is cheaper and just as quick at 2 hours 13 minutes, but only two morning departures suit a day out, and it stops at Ninh Binh station, a taxi ride from the boats and temples. A private car takes about 2 hours, and a day tour is the simplest choice if you only have one day.

How we built this guide: we checked Vietnam Railways' official timetable and fare table for 14 October 2026, van, bus and car listings on 12Go and Baolau, and day tours on Viator, all on 2 October 2026, plus a published notice on the expressway south of Ninh Binh. We did not ride these services for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 2 October 2026. Where a site showed dollars, the VND figure is our conversion.

How long does each option really take?

The road trip is 94 km by Baolau's count, so every option lands in the 2 to 3 hour range. The difference is where it starts and ends.

Limousine van and tourist bus: 2 to 3 hours

For Wednesday 14 October 2026, 12Go listed more than 900 van and bus departures, with vans and buses both from $7. A Cat Ba Discovery limousine left the Old Quarter at 11:45 and reached a travel office in Tam Coc at 13:45 for $10, and a bus-and-van combination from 160 Tran Quang Khai reached Tam Coc in 1 hour 50 minutes for $9.

On Baolau for 7 October, Trang An Limousine and The Long Travel ran vans roughly every half hour from 06:00, timed at 2.5 to 3 hours, for 300,000 to 500,000 VND. Baolau says most vans leave from Noi Bai airport or from company offices in Hoan Kiem and Hai Ba Trung districts.

Train: 2 hours 13 minutes

All Ninh Binh trains are North-South expresses heading for Hue and beyond. Vietnam Railways' timetable for 14 October 2026 lists six: SE7 at 06:00 arriving 08:13, SE5 at 08:00 arriving 10:13, SE9 at 13:00 arriving 15:14, and three evening trains (SE3 at 19:20, SE19 at 19:45 and SE1 at 21:45, which arrives at midnight). On SE7, a soft seat cost 106,000 to 126,000 VND and a sleeper berth 146,000 to 233,000 VND.

Trains arrive at Ninh Binh Railway Station on Hoang Hoa Tham street in the city, per Baolau, so budget extra time for a taxi or ride-hailing car to Tam Coc or Trang An.

Private car: about 2 hours

12Go's private cars started at $34 for a 3-seat car timed at 2 hours, with a 10-seat van from Noi Bai airport at $99. On Viator, a private transfer listed 2 hours to 2 hours 10 minutes from $58 per group.

Does the new expressway south of Ninh Binh change anything?

No, not for this trip. The 63 km Mai Son to National Highway 45 expressway opened on 29 April 2023, running from the Mai Son interchange in Ninh Binh's Yen Mo district south into Thanh Hoa province, per VietnamFinance. It speeds up journeys further south, not the drive from Hanoi to Ninh Binh itself.

Is a day tour better than going on your own?

A tour is better if you have one day and do not want to plan; going independently is better if you stay a night. Viator showed more than 200 results for day trips from Hanoi on 2 October 2026. Group tours ran from about $30 per person (Tam Coc or Trang An with Mua Cave, 10 to 11 hours) to about $85 to $90 for small groups capped at nine, while private day tours ran from about $65 (priced by group size) to $185 or more.

Judging by the tour titles, most itineraries pair a Trang An or Tam Coc boat ride with Mua Cave and one temple site, either the ancient capital at Hoa Lu or the Bai Dinh Pagoda complex. The trade-off is time: 10 to 13 hours, with about 4 to 5 of them on the road.

Tip: Doing it yourself in a day? The 06:00 train and a late-afternoon train back give you the longest time on the ground for the lowest fare.

Where do vans and trains leave from and arrive?

Vans start in or near the Old Quarter, and trains start at Hanoi Railway Station.

  • Vans and buses from Hanoi: company offices and pickup points in the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem district, such as 160 Tran Quang Khai, and some from Noi Bai airport, per 12Go and Baolau.
  • Vans arriving: travel offices and hotels in Tam Coc and Ninh Binh city. Ask before booking whether your hotel is on the drop-off list.
  • Trains: Hanoi Railway Station at 120 Le Duan to Ninh Binh Railway Station, per Baolau.

Tips for luggage and timing

Travel light if you plan to move between Tam Coc, Trang An and Hoa Lu by bike or scooter.

  • Baolau describes the limousine vans on this route as 7 to 10 seaters, so mention a large suitcase when you book.
  • Baolau asks bus passengers to reach the departure point well before departure, as some companies shuttle passengers to the main vehicle.
  • Avoid the evening trains unless your hotel expects a late arrival; SE1 reaches Ninh Binh at midnight.

Going the other way: Ninh Binh to Hanoi

If you are continuing south instead, see our Hanoi to Hue route, which uses the same trains. More options are on our routes from Hanoi page and in the guide to getting around Vietnam.

Limitations

Prices here are listings seen on 2 October 2026 for travel on 7 and 14 October, and they change with the date, the class and demand. Tour prices also vary with group size. Train times shift when Vietnam Railways issues a new timetable, so check dsvn.vn before you book.

Tet is the busiest period of the year. Vietnam Railways opened Tet 2027 ticket sales on 5 September 2026 for a holiday travel period from 23 January to 25 February 2027, per Bao Lao Cai, so book early for those weeks. Weather matters too: Vietnam's tourism authority lists June to August as Hanoi's rainy season (Vietnam National Authority of Tourism), and storms can disrupt road trips and boat rides at short notice. Before you go, confirm your pickup point, your drop-off and what a tour price includes.
