Fly from Hanoi to Hue if time matters: the flight is about 1 hour 15 minutes and started from about $37 for mid-October. Take the overnight train if you would rather save a hotel night and arrive with the day ahead of you: SE3 and SE1 take 12.5 to 13 hours. Sleeper buses are the cheapest option and, with the expressway now running most of the way, take about 10 to 12 hours. If you have an extra day, Phong Nha breaks the trip roughly in half.

How we built this guide: we checked Vietnam Railways' official timetables and the SE3 fare table for 14 October 2026, train, bus, flight and car listings on 12Go and Baolau, and official notices on Tet ticketing and the expressway, all on 2 October 2026. We did not ride these services for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 2 October 2026. Where a site showed dollars, the VND figure is our conversion.

How long does each option really take?

The flight is quickest by a wide margin. The train and the bus both take most of a night, and the bus is now slightly faster on paper.

Train: 12.5 to 14 hours

Vietnam Railways' timetable for 14 October 2026 lists six trains over the 688 km line. The overnight ones are SE3 at 19:20 arriving 07:50 (12 hours 30 minutes), SE19 at 19:45 arriving 08:45 (13 hours) and SE1 at 21:45 arriving 10:25 (12 hours 40 minutes). By day, SE7 leaves at 06:00 and arrives at 19:38, SE5 leaves at 08:00 and arrives at 21:35, and SE9 leaves at 13:00 and arrives at 03:07.

On SE3, a 4-berth sleeper cost 1,080,000 to 1,189,000 VND, a 6-berth sleeper 789,000 to 1,015,000 VND and a soft seat 500,000 to 572,000 VND. Baolau's fares for 7 October were similar, with SE19 4-berth sleepers at 1,206,000 VND. Private carriages from companies including Violette Trains, New Livitrans, Lotus Train, Laman Express and Tonkin Heritage Express run on SE1, SE3 and SE19 at the same times, listed on Baolau at 1.9 to 4.2 million VND (about $73 to $160).

Flight: about 1 hour 15 minutes

12Go's direct flights for 14 October 2026 included Vietjet's VJ563 at 09:20 arriving 10:35 for $37, and Vietnam Airlines' VN7543 at 07:00 arriving 08:20 for $39 and VN1545 at 16:35 arriving 17:55 for $54. Many other results on the same page were connections through other cities and took far longer, so filter for direct flights. Flights leave Hanoi's Noi Bai airport (HAN) and land at Hue's Phu Bai airport (HUI).

Sleeper bus: about 10 to 12 hours

12Go listed more than 130 bus departures for 14 October 2026, from $19. Examples: a Viet Lao Bus cabin coach from 82 Tran Vy at 22:00 arriving at Nguyen Hoang Bus Station at 08:00 for $34, and a G8 Sapa Open Tour cabin bus from 160 Tran Quang Khai at 20:30 arriving at Hue Railway Station at 07:30, also $34. These times reflect the North-South Expressway, which Vietnam's government described as complete from Cao Bang to Ca Mau at the end of 2025, per VOV. Baolau's own guide still allows 12 to 14 hours, which is a safer planning figure.

Private car: about 9 hours

12Go showed three private cars from $300 per vehicle, and its route timetable lists a 5-seat SUV at about 8 hours 50 minutes. That is faster than the bus on the same road because a car does not stop for pickups.

Should you stop in Phong Nha on the way?

Yes, if you have a spare day or two: it turns one long night into two shorter legs.

  • Hanoi to Phong Nha by bus: about 7 to 8 hours on 12Go, from about $20. An HK Buslines cabin bus leaves 76 Hong Tien at 08:00 and reaches Phong Nha at 15:00 for $28.
  • Hanoi to Dong Hoi by train, then a car: the same SE trains reach Dong Hoi in 9 hours 25 minutes (SE3) to 10 hours 45 minutes (SE9), from 383,000 VND on Baolau for 7 October. From Dong Hoi, a private car to Phong Nha takes about 45 minutes to an hour from $30 on 12Go.
  • Phong Nha to Hue: buses take about 4 to 5 hours and cost about $8 to $14 on 12Go, where one operator alone listed 16 departures for 16 October 2026.

Where do trains and buses leave from and arrive?

Trains run between Hanoi Railway Station on Le Duan street and Hue Railway Station on Bui Thi Xuan street. Buses use company offices.

  • Trains: Hanoi Railway Station, 120 Le Duan, to Hue Railway Station on Bui Thi Xuan, per Baolau. Baolau asks passengers to arrive 30 minutes before departure.
  • Buses from Hanoi: offices in the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem district, such as 208 Tran Quang Khai, 82 Tran Vy and 15 Hang Muoi, per 12Go. Baolau advises arriving at least 60 minutes early because some companies shuttle passengers out to the main bus.
  • Buses in Hue: Nguyen Hoang Bus Station, Hue Railway Station, or company offices around Le Loi street, depending on the operator.

Tips for luggage and night travel

Choose your berth and your bag size before you choose the mode.

  • On the train, lower berths in a 4-berth compartment cost a little more than upper ones, as the SE3 fare table shows: 1,154,000 against 1,080,000 VND.
  • On sleeper buses, big bags go in the hold. Keep passport, phone, cash and a layer in your berth.
  • If you arrive in Hue before dawn on SE9 or a bus, book a room from the night before or ask about early check-in.

Going the other way: Hue to Hanoi

The evening sleepers are the best choice northbound. Vietnam Railways' Hue to Hanoi timetable for 14 October 2026 lists SE4 at 15:10 arriving 04:36, SE2 at 15:54 arriving 05:42 and SE20 at 20:48 arriving 11:10, plus SE8 and SE6, which leave Hue before dawn and reach Hanoi at 16:20 and 19:14. If you are heading south instead, see our Hue to Hoi An route and the routes from Hue. More trips out of the capital are on our routes from Hanoi page, and the bigger picture is in our guide to getting around Vietnam.

Limitations

Fares and times are listings seen on 2 October 2026 for 7 and 14 October, and both move. Airfares change by the hour, private-carriage prices change with demand, and Vietnam Railways revises its timetable during the year; seat61's June 2026 timetable, for example, showed different departure times from the October one. Check dsvn.vn before you book.

Tet is the hardest time to travel this line. Vietnam Railways' Tet 2027 travel period runs from 23 January to 25 February 2027, per Bao Lao Cai. Under the Tet refund rules, returning a ticket costs 30% of the fare on even-numbered trains from 29 January to 8 February 2027 and on odd-numbered trains from 9 to 17 February, and individual tickets must be returned at least 24 hours before departure, per Vietnam Railway Transport JSC.

Weather also matters. Vietnam's tourism authority notes occasional flooding in Hue from September to November and says tropical storms can hit central Vietnam hard late in the year (Vietnam National Authority of Tourism). In that season, keep a spare day and travel insurance that covers delays.
