You do not need to go back through Hanoi. Direct buses and limousine vans run from Sapa to Ha Giang many times a day, taking about 5 to 6.5 hours for 285,000 to 700,000 VND depending on the seat, half the time of the Hanoi detour. A private car takes about 5 hours, and it is the only practical way to take the scenic road through Bac Ha, Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi. Travel by day, and book the loop itself with a licensed company once you arrive.
How we built this guide: on 4 October 2026 we checked Vexere's route pages for Sapa to Ha Giang and for the two Hanoi legs, 12Go listings for Tuesday 20 October 2026 in both directions, Baolau for Saturday 10 October 2026, route guides from redBus and Local Vietnam, Vietnamese reports on road conditions and the April 2026 loop rules, and the UK and Canadian governments' travel advice. We did not make the trip for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 4 October 2026. Where a site showed dollars, the VND figure is our conversion.

How long does the direct bus take?
Plan on about 6 hours. Vexere's route page, updated on 4 October 2026, counts about 23 trips a day from Bang Phan, Sao Viet, Quang Tuyen, Quang Nghi, Ket Doan Travel and others, with an average trip of 6.4 hours, fares from 285,000 to 450,000 VND (about $10.89 to $17.20) and departures from 07:30 to 23:00. Local Vietnam, a travel company that also sells transfers on this route, says the drive could be done in 5.5 hours but most buses take about 6.5 with stops.
On 12Go for 20 October 2026, 56 of the 61 trips listed were buses and vans. Examples:
- Sao Viet: cabin buses from its Sapa office at 10:00 and 13:00, timed at 6 hours, from 420,000 VND (about $16) for an upper single cabin with a toilet on board to 700,000 VND for a lower double cabin.
- Bang Phan: an 11:00 bus from 599 Dien Bien Phu to 100 Tran Phu in Ha Giang, timed at 6 hours, from 319,800 VND (about $12.22), or 373,100 VND for a single royal cabin. On Baolau, the same company charged 400,000 VND for 10 October.
- Quang Giang Bus: 18-seat limousine vans from 577 Dien Bien Phu at 14:00 and 16:00, timed at 5 hours, for 478,125 VND (about $18.27).
- Vin Bus: 18-seat limousine vans at 08:30, 16:00 and 16:30, timed at 6 hours, for 456,000 VND.
Quality varies. On 12Go, one Sao Viet passenger reported a delay of more than two hours on 2 October 2026, and a September rider on a Quang Giang limousine described worn seats and a bumpy ride. Read recent reviews before you book.
Is it faster to go back through Hanoi?
No. It takes about twice as long and costs more. Vexere's averages on 4 October 2026 were 5.9 hours from Sapa to Hanoi (500,000 VND average fare) and 6.2 hours from Hanoi to Ha Giang (390,000 VND), so about 12 hours on the road plus a change of bus across the city, against 6.4 hours and 367,500 VND on average direct. Two buses in a day also push you toward a night bus, and the UK government warns that bus crashes are more likely at night. Go via Hanoi only if you want a night there or the direct buses are full; our Hanoi to Sapa and Hanoi to Ha Giang guides cover those legs.
Which road does the bus take?
Main national roads, not the high border roads. redBus says buses on this route usually travel on National Routes 2, 70 and 279, and Local Vietnam says there is no expressway on the way, only town roads and mountain highways. Route 279 runs through Bac Quang and meets Route 70 at Bao Yen in Lao Cai province, per Vietnamese Wikipedia. Distances vary by source: about 230 km for Local Vietnam and redBus, 242 km for 12Go and 288 km for Vexere.
Since the 2025 mergers, Ha Giang has been part of Tuyen Quang province and Yen Bai part of Lao Cai, per vietnam.travel, so tickets and maps may show either the old or the new names.
The scenic way: Bac Ha, Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi
A mountain road runs farther north, through Bac Ha, Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi. Local Vietnam suggests it for motorbike riders over two or three days, with nights in Bac Ha and Hoang Su Phi, and as a detour by private car. We found no scheduled bus that advertises this road.
- Bac Ha: the Sunday market runs from about 06:30 to 14:00, and the town is about 3 hours from Sapa by road, per a 2026 vietnamtourism.com guide.
- Hoang Su Phi: about 100 km and at least 3 hours from Ha Giang city, per Local Vietnam's Hoang Su Phi guide. In 2012, 760 hectares of the district's roughly 3,000 hectares of terraces were recognized as a national relic, per VietNamNet, and they are most golden from late September into early October, per Viet Nam News. The terraces at Nam Khoa, at the top of this page, are in Hoang Su Phi.
What does a private car cost?
About 2.55 to 3.2 million VND for a car, and about 5 hours direct. On 12Go for 20 October 2026, MAI CAR TRAVEL's three-seat sedan cost 2,550,000 VND (about $97), timed at 5 hours; Saigon DMC's and OUROS Travel's three-seat cars $110.40 (about 2,889,000 VND), at 4 hours 50 minutes; and Hanoi VIP Transfer's five-seat SUV $114.30 (about 2,991,000 VND), at 5 hours. Ten-seat vans started at 4,125,000 VND. Local Vietnam allows 5.5 to 6.5 hours with stops. A car is what makes Bac Ha or Hoang Su Phi possible, so agree the route and any overnight stop with the company before you book.
What are the roads like in the rainy season?
Expect landslides after heavy rain, especially from June to September. The Government of Canada puts the north's rainy season in those months and says roads may become impassable from landslides, and Vietnam's tourism board calls June to August stormy in the far north and early October lovely, per vietnam.travel. On 5 August 2026, Bao Lao Cai reported slides at seven points on Route 4D between Lao Cai and Sapa, with fog and wet roads. Travel by day and keep a spare day in the wet months.
How do you combine the Sapa trek with the Ha Giang Loop?
Plan about nine days from Hanoi and back. Our Sapa guide suggests two or three nights there, and the Ha Giang guide three or four days on the loop. A workable order:
- Day 1: Hanoi to Sapa, about 6 hours by bus.
- Days 2 and 3: trek the Muong Hoa valley, with a homestay night.
- Day 4: a morning bus to Ha Giang, arriving mid-afternoon.
- Days 5 to 8: the loop.
- Day 9: the bus back to Hanoi, about 6 hours.
Timing can give you color on both sides. Hoang Su Phi peaks from late September into early October, and Ha Giang's buckwheat flowers bloom from October to December, with the festival opening on 6 November 2026 in Dong Van, per VietnamPlus. Sapa's own terraces usually turn gold earlier; our Sapa guide has the months.
What the April 2026 loop rules mean for you
Book the loop only with a licensed travel agency. After a 19-year-old British tourist died on a loop tour, the authorities ruled in April 2026 that only licensed agencies may organize or sell loop tours, per Viet Nam News. Operators must keep contracts, passenger lists and insurance records, plan routes, rest stops and emergency arrangements, brief riders on safety and protective gear, and supply maintained bikes with helmets. If a Sapa agency sells you a combined trek and loop package, ask which licensed company runs the Ha Giang part.
Do you need a license to ride the loop yourself?
Yes, and which one depends on your passport. The UK government says British riders need the 1968 international driving permit plus their UK license and third-party insurance, while Canada says its citizens need a Vietnamese license for 50cc or more. If you are not covered, ride behind an easy rider. Our motorbike rental guide explains the rules and what insurers cover.
Going the other way: Ha Giang to Sapa
The same companies run back. On 12Go for 20 October 2026, 75 trips were listed, 70 of them by bus from 319,800 VND, with cars from 2,600,000 VND. Some evening buses, such as Bang Phan's 18:00 from 100 Tran Phu, reach Sapa around midnight, so pick a morning departure if you can.

Limitations
Fares and timetables are a snapshot checked on 4 October 2026 for trips on 10 and 20 October, and they change, especially at weekends and around the buckwheat festival. Sources disagree on the distance, from about 230 km to 288 km. The roads come from redBus and Local Vietnam, not the bus companies, and Local Vietnam sells transfers and tours on this route. We found no 2026 report of a full closure on the direct bus route, but slides on mountain roads are common in the rains. We did not check motorbike rental prices. Check the forecast and your operator before you set off, and see routes from Hanoi for the trips out of the capital.
