The overnight train is the best way from Ninh Binh to Hue. SE3 leaves Ninh Binh at 21:36 and pulls into Hue at 07:50, so you sleep through the 573 km and wake up with a full day ahead. Sleeper buses that pick up around Tam Coc are a little cheaper and about as fast, but they drive through the night on the highway. Flying is not a real shortcut: there is no airport in Ninh Binh, no flight from nearby Tho Xuan to Hue, and backtracking to Hanoi eats most of the time you would save.
How we built this guide: on 4 October 2026 we checked Vietnam Railways' official timetables and fare tables for Wednesday 21 October 2026, bus, train, van and flight listings on 12Go for the same date, Baolau's route guide, two published reports on Tho Xuan airport, Seat61's guide to Vietnamese trains and UK travel advice. We did not ride these services for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 4 October 2026.
Which way from Ninh Binh to Hue suits you?
Take the night train for comfort, a sleeper bus if a Tam Coc pickup matters more than a proper berth, and the day train or a Phong Nha stop if you want to see the country. Our Hue guide covers where to stay at the other end.

| Phong Nha stop | Two days, about 5.5 to 6 hours plus 3.5 to 5 hours | From 588,000 VND for the first bus | Two daytime rides | Seeing the caves on the way |
How long does each option really take?
The night train and the night bus both take most of a night. The difference is the bed and the road.
Train: 10 hours 14 minutes to 11 hours 50 minutes
Every train that stops at Ninh Binh for Hue is a North-South express that started in Hanoi 115 km earlier. Vietnam Railways' timetable for 21 October 2026 lists six:
| Train | Leaves Ninh Binh | Arrives Hue | Time | 4-berth sleeper | Soft seat |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SE7 | 08:16 | 19:38 | 11 h 22 min | 749,000 to 836,000 VND | 401,000 to 461,000 VND |
| SE5 | 10:16 | 21:35 | 11 h 19 min | 749,000 to 836,000 VND | 441,000 to 461,000 VND |
| SE9 | 15:17 | 03:07 | 11 h 50 min | 866,000 to 946,000 VND | 444,000 to 520,000 VND |
| SE3 | 21:36 | 07:50 | 10 h 14 min | 946,000 to 1,041,000 VND | 460,000 to 527,000 VND |
| SE19 | 21:57 | 08:45 | 10 h 48 min | 986,000 to 1,099,000 VND | Sleepers only |
| SE1 | 00:03 | 10:25 | 10 h 22 min | 892,000 to 983,000 VND | 479,000 to 499,000 VND |
SE3 is the one to aim for: a sensible boarding time, the shortest journey and a breakfast-time arrival. SE19 runs 21 minutes later with sleepers only, including 2-berth VIP compartments at 2,139,000 VND. SE1 leaves just after midnight, and SE9 lands in Hue at 03:07, so avoid both unless the timing suits you.
Sleeper bus: 8 to 10.5 hours
12Go listed 183 bus departures for 21 October 2026, from 500,000 VND, with the fastest timed at 8 hours. HK Buslines ran single cabins from a Tam Coc agency at 21:30, 22:30 and 23:00, each taking 9 hours to 35 Nguyen Cong Tru in Hue, for 715,680 VND (upper) or 766,800 VND (lower). The cheapest listing, a Trekking Travel cabin bus at 20:00 from Ninh Binh railway station to Nguyen Hoang Bus Station or Tung Thien Vuong street in Hue, cost 500,000 VND but carried a 1.0 rating on the site.
Baolau is more cautious, timing Duc Duong Bus (650,000 to 850,000 VND) and HK Bus Lines (about 700,000 VND) at 10 to 10.5 hours. It says most buses leave from company offices in the Tam Coc area and asks passengers to arrive at least 60 minutes early.
Backtrack to Hanoi and fly: about 7 hours
It works, but it saves only about three hours on the night train and costs more. On 12Go for 21 October 2026, limousine-and-car transfers from Tam Coc to Noi Bai took about 3 hours for 537,500 VND (about $21), with the fastest at 2 hours for 559,200 VND. Our fly-or-ride research found VietJet's VJ563 from Hanoi to Hue that day at 919,781 VND (about $35) for a 75-minute flight. Add two hours at the airport and about 30 minutes from Phu Bai airport into Hue, and you arrive about 7 hours after leaving Tam Coc. Several reviewers on 12Go's Ninh Binh to Noi Bai page described being switched between vehicles on the way to the airport, so allow extra time.
What about flying from Thanh Hoa?
Tho Xuan airport, which serves Thanh Hoa, does not help: 12Go showed only trains and buses from Thanh Hoa to Hue for 21 October 2026. Its routes run mainly south: VnEconomy reported in July 2025 that VietJet had added Da Lat, Buon Ma Thuot and Can Tho and raised Ho Chi Minh City to six flights a day. Getting there is not quick either: Thanh Hoa station is 60 km beyond Ninh Binh by rail, per Vietnam Railways' distance table, and the airport sits a further 39 to 45 km west of Thanh Hoa city, per Sun Paradise Land.
Should you stop in Phong Nha on the way?
Yes, if you have two or three days to spare. It turns one night of travel into two daytime rides with the caves in between; our Phong Nha guide covers what to see.
- Ninh Binh to Phong Nha by bus: on 12Go for 21 October 2026, G8 Sapa Open Tour ran a single-cabin bus from its Tam Coc office at 08:15, arriving at 13:45, for 588,000 VND, and a VIP limousine from the Tam Coc boat station at 09:15, arriving at 15:00, for 630,000 VND. One September 2026 reviewer noted only one toilet stop, about 3.5 to 4 hours in.
- Ninh Binh to Dong Hoi by train: SE7 leaves at 08:16 and reaches Dong Hoi at 16:15, with soft seats from 298,000 VND (about $11), per Vietnam Railways. From Dong Hoi, Phong Nha is about 38 km, or 45 minutes to an hour by car, as our Hue to Phong Nha guide explains.
- Phong Nha to Hue: buses take about 3.5 to 5 hours, and the HQ1 heritage train leaves Tho Loc at 13:15 and reaches Hue at 17:25. Our Hue to Phong Nha guide has the details.
Where do trains and buses leave from and arrive?
Trains use Ninh Binh Railway Station in the city, while most buses start around Tam Coc.
- Trains: Ninh Binh Railway Station on Hoang Hoa Tham street to Hue Railway Station on Bui Thi Xuan street, as our Hanoi to Ninh Binh and Hanoi to Hue guides explain. If you are staying in Tam Coc or near Trang An, budget a taxi or ride-hailing car to the station.
- Buses from Ninh Binh: company offices and agencies in Tam Coc, the Tam Coc boat station area or, for some operators, Ninh Binh railway station, per 12Go.
- Buses in Hue: company offices such as 35 Nguyen Cong Tru, Nguyen Hoang Bus Station or addresses on Tung Thien Vuong street, depending on the operator.

Tips for berths, buses and safety
Book the berth early, choose the departure time with care and keep valuables with you.
- Lower berths cost more than upper ones: on SE3, 1,011,000 to 1,041,000 VND against 946,000 to 976,000 VND in a 4-berth compartment. In a 6-berth compartment the top tier is the cheapest, at 691,000 VND.
- Seat61 says booking for long-distance journeys opens about 60 days ahead, sometimes more (Seat61). Buy as soon as your dates are firm, especially for weekends and holidays.
- The UK government warns that bus and coach crashes are more likely at night and that vehicles are often poorly maintained. If you take the bus, wear the seat belt and keep your passport and phone in your cabin.
Tip: Staying in Tam Coc and catching the 21:36 train? Ask your hotel to book the taxi to Ninh Binh station in advance, and eat before you leave.
Going the other way: Hue to Ninh Binh
Northbound, SE20 is the friendliest timing. Vietnam Railways' Hue to Ninh Binh timetable for 21 October 2026 lists SE20 leaving Hue at 20:48 and reaching Ninh Binh at 07:59, with 4-berth sleepers at 741,000 to 833,000 VND (about $28 to $32). SE4 (15:10) and SE2 (15:54) are cheaper, at 683,000 to 760,000 VND, but arrive at 02:11 and 03:21. More trips from the old capital are on our routes from Hue page.

Limitations
These are listings seen on 4 October 2026 for Wednesday 21 October, and fares change with the date, the berth and how early you book. We could see Vietnam Railways' fare tables but not how many berths were left for boarding at Ninh Binh, so check availability on dsvn.vn. Bus times on 12Go (8 to 9 hours) are more optimistic than Baolau's 10 to 10.5 hours; plan on the longer figure. The 7-hour estimate for flying via Hanoi is our own sum of the van, the airport allowance and the flight, not a single ticket. Tho Xuan's route list comes from a 2025 news report and a 2026 article on a commercial site, so check the airport's current routes if you are flying from Thanh Hoa for another reason.
Weather matters on this route. Vietnam's tourism authority describes Hue's late rainy season, with wet, cool days from September to February and occasional flooding from September to November (Vietnam National Authority of Tourism). Floods and storms can delay trains and buses on the central coast, so keep a spare day in autumn.
