Fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Buon Ma Thuot if your budget allows: the flight takes about an hour, against 6 to 9 hours on the road, and fares start at about 920,000 VND. The bus is the budget choice, and an overnight cabin bus saves a hotel night, at the cost of a short night and the higher risk of night driving. No expressway reaches the highlands on this route yet, so a private car is expensive and barely faster than the bus. There is no train.

How we built this guide: on 4 October 2026 we checked flight and bus listings on Vexere for Wednesday 21 October 2026, 12Go's bus timetables for the same date, Baolau's listings for Saturday 10 October 2026, July 2026 news on the expressways planned for this road, and our own Fly or Ride dataset. We did not make the trip for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 4 October 2026.

Which way from Ho Chi Minh City to Buon Ma Thuot suits you?

Fly if time matters, take a day bus for value, and take a night cabin bus only if a saved hotel night matters more than sleep. Our Buon Ma Thuot guide covers the coffee, the waterfalls and Lak Lake once you arrive.

Vexere showed a 23 kg checked bag with Vietnam Airlines' cheapest fare and only a 7 kg cabin bag with VietJet's, so compare the total price if you travel with a suitcase. Wikipedia's airport page also lists Bamboo Airways at the airport, but we saw no Bamboo flight on this route for our date. If you are flying in from abroad, our Tan Son Nhat airport guide covers the first leg.

Is the flight worth the extra money? Our Fly or Ride research priced it for the same date: door to door, the 06:30 flight took about 4 hours 40 minutes against 8 hours 20 minutes on the cheapest bus, saving 3 hours 40 minutes at about US$6.77 an hour saved.

How long do sleeper and cabin buses take?

Plan on about 8 hours, sometimes less at night. Vexere counted 54 bus companies and about 488 trips a day on this route on 4 October 2026, with an average trip of 8.1 hours over about 356 km. These are some of the services listed for 21 October 2026:

  • Quoc Thinh: a standard sleeper at 11:00 from Mien Dong bus station to Dak Lak provincial bus station, 8 hours 20 minutes, 270,000 VND, the cheapest we saw.
  • Hai Luan: limousine sleepers from An Suong bus station at 07:30 and 21:01, 7 hours 25 minutes, 300,000 to 330,000 VND.
  • Long Van Limousine: VIP cabins at 08:00 from the old Mien Dong station, 8 hours, from 410,000 VND, and at 20:30 from its Binh Thanh office, 7 hours 55 minutes, from 486,000 VND.
  • Hoang Thuy: a VIP cabin bus at 23:00 from Mien Dong bus station to Buon Ma Thuot's southern bus station, 6 hours 15 minutes, from 350,000 VND (about $13.40).
  • Tien Oanh: limousine sleepers from its Tan Binh office, 8 hours 45 minutes on Vexere, 350,000 VND. On 12Go, Tien Oanh's buses from 266 Dong Den ran to 134 Hai Ba Trung in Buon Ma Thuot in 8 hours.
  • Kumho Samco: a limousine sleeper at 22:00 from the old Mien Dong station, 7 hours 30 minutes, 360,000 VND.

Baolau times the trip at 8 to 9 hours and notes that buses can run 30 minutes early or late with traffic.

Day bus or night bus?

Take a day bus if you can. Night cabin buses reach Buon Ma Thuot between about 03:00 and 08:00, and the UK government warns that bus and coach crashes are more likely at night, that tired night drivers keep driving, and that petty theft on overnight transport is a risk. Keep your passport and phone on your body, not in the hold.

Where do buses leave from and arrive?

Pickup points are spread across the city, so choose a bus that leaves near your hotel.

  • Mien Dong bus station: Vexere's listings name both "Mien Dong Bus Station" and the "Old Mien Dong" or "Old Eastern" station, so check which one your ticket means. Baolau places Mien Dong at 292 Dinh Bo Linh in Binh Thanh.
  • An Suong and the western bus station: Hai Luan and Quy Thao, among others.
  • Company offices: in Tan Binh (Tien Oanh at 266 Dong Den, per 12Go), Tan Phu and Binh Thanh.
  • In Buon Ma Thuot: buses arrive at the southern bus station, the provincial bus station or company offices in the center, such as Tien Oanh's at 134 Hai Ba Trung.

What about a private car, and is there an expressway yet?

A private car is not worth it on this route for most people. Baolau quoted a private transfer at 7,200,000 VND (about $275) per vehicle for 10 October 2026, timed at 8 hours, as long as the bus, and 12Go listed no private cars at all. Vietnamese Wikipedia puts the city about 350 km from Ho Chi Minh City, and Baolau gives 322 km.

The road will speed up, but not yet. Two expressways are planned along this corridor: Ho Chi Minh City to Thu Dau Mot to Chon Thanh, and Gia Nghia to Chon Thanh. In July 2026, Bao Dau Tu reported that Ho Chi Minh City had set 2 September 2026 as the deadline to hand over cleared land for the first. The second, nearly 130 km long, was planned in 2024 for completion in 2026, per Saigon Times. We found no report of either opening by October 2026.

Side note: Da Lat to Buon Ma Thuot

Buses link the two highland cities in about 6 hours. 12Go's timetable for 21 October 2026 showed Phuc Hai's VIP buses at 07:15, 10:15, 13:01 and 17:15, each taking 5 hours 50 minutes for 250,000 VND, while Kim Anh's buses at 08:00, 14:00 and 20:00 (250,000 VND) and Viet Nam Travel Bus cabins (290,000 VND) took about 6 hours 20 minutes. Local Vietnam puts the road at about 200 km and about 5 hours, and calls the connection not very convenient. Take a morning bus: the 20:00 departures arrive after 02:00. Our Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat guide covers the other side of the triangle.

Limitations

Fares and timetables are a snapshot of listings checked on 4 October 2026 for 10 and 21 October, and they change, especially around weekends, holidays and Tet. Bus times on booking sites are the operators' own figures, and the night buses we saw were timed faster than most day buses. We found only one private transfer quote, so compare prices with local drivers if you want a car. Expressway timelines in Vietnam often slip; if a section opens, car times will fall first. Rain is heaviest in Buon Ma Thuot from May to October, per the climate table in our destination guide, so allow extra time on the road in those months.
