Flying in Vietnam buys back a lot of time for very little money. We priced the cheapest flight and the cheapest sensible bus or train on 18 city pairs for Wednesday 21 October 2026 and timed every trip door to door: the median hour saved by flying cost about 26,000 VND, roughly US$1. On four routes, including Hanoi to Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh, the flight was cheaper than any bus or train as well as faster. The ground only wins clearly on short hops: from Hanoi to Dong Hoi, each hour saved by air cost about 187,000 VND (US$7.16).
How we built this guide: on 3 October 2026 we recorded the cheapest direct flight and the cheapest direct bus on Vexere and the cheapest train seat or berth on Vietnam Railways' official ticket site, all for travel on 21 October 2026. We then added airport time from Vietnam Airlines Group's published advice and airport transfer times from Grab, Vietnam's national tourism site and Vietnam Airlines. We did not ride these services for this study. Every fare in the dataset has its source link. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND), with US dollar figures at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 3 October 2026.
Methodology
We chose 18 city pairs that have both a scheduled direct flight and a scheduled direct bus or train: seven from Hanoi, nine from Ho Chi Minh City and two from Da Nang. Every fare is a one-way price for one adult on Wednesday 21 October 2026, a normal weekday 18 days after we checked, and we read them all on 3 October 2026. We priced one direction per pair, as named.
What we priced
- Flights: the lowest fare for a direct flight on Vexere's flight search. Vexere describes itself as listing more than 3,000 bus operators and all airlines and railway providers; on our routes it showed VietJet Air, Vietnam Airlines, Pacific Airlines, Vietravel Airlines and Sun PhuQuoc Airways. We took the price shown as payable per person, which on some fares included an automatic 30,000 VND site discount.
- Buses: the lowest fare for a direct bus on Vexere's bus search, sorted by price. A trip that runs past midnight had to be a sleeper or cabin bus, not a seated coach. We skipped trips the operator labels as connecting ("Nối"), trips listed under Da Nang whose pickup was in another town such as Hoi An, and one listing with an impossible two-week arrival date.
- Trains: the lowest fare in Vietnam Railways' fare table for any train on the date. A train that arrives the same day was priced in a soft seat; a train that runs past midnight was priced in a berth, usually the top bunk of a six-berth compartment. We ignored the "extra seat" stools sold when a train is full.
- The cheapest ground option is the lower of the cheapest bus and the cheapest train, with the shorter trip winning a tie. Its time is that service's own scheduled time.
Private cars, connecting flights, two-ticket combinations (a bus plus a separate boat, for example), checked-bag fees and the ride to a bus or train station are not counted.
How we timed the flight door to door
A flight is more than its time in the air, so for every route we added three things:
- 120 minutes before departure. Vietnam Airlines Group advises being at the airport at least two hours before a domestic flight, according to VietnamPlus in June 2026, and Vietnam Airlines' check-in page opens domestic check-in two hours before departure.
- 20 minutes after landing, our own allowance to leave the plane and the terminal with cabin bags only. With the 120 minutes, that makes a fixed airport overhead of 140 minutes.
- The ride between airport and city center at both ends, using the sources our airport and city guides already cite and taking the upper end of any range: 40 minutes for Noi Bai (Grab), 40 for Tan Son Nhat (Grab gives 25 to 40), 15 for Da Nang (Grab gives 10 to 15), 30 for Phu Bai and Hue (vietnam.travel) and 50 for Cam Ranh and Nha Trang by taxi (Vietnam Airlines gives 45 to 50). For the six airports our guides do not yet cover (Lien Khuong for Da Lat, Dong Hoi, Phu Cat for Quy Nhon, Phu Quoc, Vinh and Buon Ma Thuot) we used a default of 40 minutes, the median of the five sourced airports.
Our airport guides explain those rides in detail: Noi Bai to the Old Quarter and Tan Son Nhat to the city center.
The formulas
door_to_door_flight_minutes = origin transfer + 120 + flight_minutes + 20 + destination transferhours_saved = (ground_minutes - door_to_door_flight_minutes) / 60extra_cost_vnd = cheapest_flight_vnd - cheapest_ground_vndvnd_per_hour_saved = extra_cost_vnd / hours_saved, left empty if flying saved no time (it saved time on every route). A negative value means the flight was cheaper as well as faster.usd_per_hour_saved = vnd_per_hour_saved / 26,170vnd_per_hour_saved_with_hotel = (extra_cost_vnd + nights_on_board x 679,806) / hours_saved, wherenights_on_boardcounts the nights the ground option keeps you on board from midnight to 5 a.m., and 679,806 VND is Budget Your Trip's average traveler-reported price per person for a shared hotel room in Vietnam.
Ratios use unrounded minutes; the CSV rounds hours_saved to two decimals and per-hour figures to the nearest dong or cent.
What does each hour saved cost, route by route?
Anything from nothing to about 187,000 VND an hour. The table runs from the best deal for flyers to the worst.

The median of the 18 figures is 26,082 VND (US$1.00), and the median time saved is 10 hours 15 minutes. VietJet Air had the cheapest flight on 12 routes, Vietravel Airlines on 3, Vietnam Airlines on 2 and Pacific Airlines on 1. The CSV adds flight numbers, departure times, the named bus or train, and every source link.
Where is flying a bargain?
On the long routes, where a flight costs little or nothing extra and saves most of a day. Four flights were cheaper than any bus or train on the same date. The biggest saving was Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh: Vietravel Airlines' 13:15 flight cost 869,421 VND (about US$33), while the cheapest direct bus, a 29-hour sleeper, cost 950,000 VND (about US$36). From Hanoi to Nha Trang, Vietravel's 07:10 flight cost 707,421 VND (about US$27), against 760,000 VND (about US$29) for a 21-hour limousine sleeper bus. Our Nha Trang guide covers the city end.
The same pattern holds from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. The cheapest bus took 30 hours 50 minutes for 1,090,000 VND, the cheapest train berth (SE9) took 38 hours 26 minutes for 1,301,000 VND, and the flight cost 1,053,021 VND (about US$40) for 5 hours 50 minutes door to door. Our Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City guide explains when the train is still worth it, and our classic north to south route shows how to break the trip.
Five more routes cost under 26,000 VND for each hour saved, including Hanoi to Da Lat, where a 32-hour sleeper bus saved only 55,101 VND against the flight. The reason is simple. The cheapest flights in our set all fell between 636,821 and 1,430,181 VND whether they lasted 55 minutes or 2 hours 10 minutes, while ground fares and times grow with distance. The longer the ride, the cheaper each hour you buy back.
When is the bus or train the smarter ride?
On short hops of under about nine hours by road or rail, where flying saves less than four hours at about US$6 to US$7 an hour. Four routes fall in that band: Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat, Ho Chi Minh City to Buon Ma Thuot and Hanoi to Dong Hoi. From Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat, a 200,000 VND daytime cabin bus took 8 hours 15 minutes, against 4 hours 35 minutes door to door for an 843,181 VND flight; our Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat guide covers the buses, the flights and the planned expressway.
On the 13 routes where both run, the cheapest bus undercut the cheapest sensible train fare 12 times. The train was faster on 5 of them, four out of Ho Chi Minh City:
| Route | Cheapest bus (VND) | Bus time | Cheapest train seat or berth (VND) | Train time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang | 250,000 | 5h 45m | 239,000 (SE8 soft seat) | 7h 43m |
| Ho Chi Minh City to Quy Nhon | 380,000 | 10h 40m | 392,000 (SE8 soft seat, to Dieu Tri) | 11h 55m |
| Hanoi to Dong Hoi | 350,000 | 8h 30m | 383,000 (SE7 soft seat) | 10h 15m |
| Hanoi to Da Nang | 499,000 | 12h 30m | 551,000 (SE7 soft seat) | 16h 15m |
| Da Nang to Nha Trang | 360,000 | 15h 30m | 419,000 (SE3 soft seat) | 10h 22m |
| Hanoi to Hue | 405,000 | 12h | 479,000 (SE7 soft seat) | 13h 38m |
| Hanoi to Nha Trang | 760,000 | 21h | 1,164,000 (SE9 top berth, 6-berth) | 27h 52m |
| Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh | 950,000 | 29h 04m | 1,109,000 (SE6 top berth, 6-berth) | 27h 43m |
| Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang | 450,000 | 19h 30m | 630,000 (SE8 soft seat) | 17h 21m |
| Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Hoi | 800,000 | 27h | 1,007,000 (SE10 top berth, 6-berth) | 26h 03m |
| Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City | 1,090,000 | 30h 50m | 1,301,000 (SE9 top berth, 6-berth) | 38h 26m |
| Hanoi to Quy Nhon | 810,000 | 18h 15m | 1,098,000 (SE9 top berth, 6-berth, to Dieu Tri) | 23h 17m |
| Ho Chi Minh City to Hue | 500,000 | 20h 35m | 931,000 (SE6 top berth, 6-berth) | 19h 59m |
Two rows stand out. From Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang, Vietnam Railways sold an SE8 soft seat (06:00 to 13:43) for 239,000 VND, about US$9, the cheapest ground fare on that route. From Da Nang to Nha Trang, the SE3 soft seat cost 59,000 VND more than the cheapest bus but took 5 hours 8 minutes less, a far better trade than the only direct flight, Vietnam Airlines' VN1941 at 1,430,181 VND. Our Hoi An to Nha Trang guide covers that stretch, and our comparison of Vietnam's bus companies helps you choose an operator.
How does an overnight ride change the math?
It makes flying look pricier, because a bus or train that keeps you on board from midnight to 5 a.m. also replaces a hotel night. Budget Your Trip puts the average price per person for a shared hotel room in Vietnam at 679,806 VND (about US$26). Counting one such night, the median cost of each hour saved by flying on the 12 overnight routes rises from 17,891 VND to 79,034 VND (US$3.02):
| Route | Ground option and departure | Cost per hour saved | With one hotel night counted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh | A Ba sleeper bus, 11:00 | -3,419 VND | 25,427 VND (US$0.97) |
| Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City | Hoang Long sleeper bus, 09:00 | -1,479 VND | 25,713 VND (US$0.98) |
| Hanoi to Da Lat | Ngoc Hung Van Nhan sleeper bus, 03:00 | 2,079 VND | 27,732 VND (US$1.06) |
| Hanoi to Nha Trang | Thuan Hung Travel limousine sleeper, 12:15 | -3,467 VND | 41,356 VND (US$1.58) |
| Ho Chi Minh City to Dong Hoi | Phuong Hoang sleeper bus, 13:00 | 25,369 VND | 56,625 VND (US$2.16) |
| Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang | Tan Hiep sleeper bus, 14:00 | 14,552 VND | 60,125 VND (US$2.30) |
| Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc | Bon Luyen Express sleeper bus, 21:30 | -6,643 VND | 97,943 VND (US$3.74) |
| Hanoi to Da Nang | Kim Chi 265 limousine sleeper, 19:00 | 21,229 VND | 107,099 VND (US$4.09) |
| Da Nang to Da Lat | Thanh Thuy limousine sleeper, 15:30 | 84,350 VND | 154,675 VND (US$5.91) |
| Da Nang to Nha Trang | Hanh Cafe Ha Phuong limousine sleeper, 15:30 | 98,786 VND | 161,537 VND (US$6.17) |
| Hanoi to Hue | Minh Map Luxury limousine sleeper, 18:00 | 71,004 VND | 164,771 VND (US$6.30) |
| Ho Chi Minh City to Quy Nhon | Manh Hung sleeper bus, 18:30 | 92,534 VND | 209,072 VND (US$7.99) |
Hanoi to Hue shows the effect best. The 18:00 sleeper bus arrives at 06:00 for 405,000 VND, so flying saves 7 hours 15 minutes but also costs you a night's sleep somewhere, and the true price of each hour saved more than doubles to about 165,000 VND. Our Hanoi to Hue guide compares the overnight trains on that line.
The timing matters. We counted no hotel saving for rides that cross midnight but drop you in the small hours, such as the cheapest Ho Chi Minh City to Hue bus (05:45, arriving 02:20) or the Hanoi to Dong Hoi bus (19:30, arriving 04:00). A solo traveler who books a whole room saves more: Budget Your Trip's average for a double room is 1,359,612 VND.

Limitations
This is a one-day snapshot. We re-read the Hanoi to Nha Trang bus listing on 4 October 2026, when a 760,000 VND direct sleeper bus was on sale, and the dataset uses that fare. Fares move daily, climb near Tet and other holidays, and include whatever promotions each site ran on 3 October 2026, so rerun the numbers for your own date. We used one site per mode. A spot check on 12Go, in VND as that site displayed it, found its lowest flight fares within about 7% of Vexere's, in both directions: Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City from 1,122,833 VND against Vexere's 1,053,021, but Ho Chi Minh City to Hue from 888,444 VND against 919,781 and Hanoi to Dong Hoi from 1,003,040 VND against 1,052,181. Airline websites may show other prices again.
Bags change the math. Many of the cheapest fares, including VietJet's economy fares on Vexere, came with a 7 kg cabin bag only, so a checked bag adds both a fee and time at the carousel. We also used scheduled times throughout, and flights and long-distance buses can both run late.
The ground side is slightly flattered. We did not add the ride to the bus or train station, and many of the cheapest buses leave from outlying stations such as Nuoc Ngam in Hanoi or Mien Dong in Ho Chi Minh City; trains to Quy Nhon stop at Dieu Tri station, so add a local ride there. Six airports use our 40-minute default transfer rather than a sourced time. We counted only single-ticket services, so a bus plus a separate boat to Phu Quoc, or a private car, is a different calculation. Our guide to getting around Vietnam covers those options, and our money guide explains the exchange rate.
The biggest long-term change is the planned high-speed railway: a 1,541 km line designed for up to 350 km/h, targeted for 2035 according to VietnamPlus. Until it runs, the long north to south trips in this study will keep favoring the plane.
