Fly from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City unless the journey itself is the point. The flight takes about 2 hours 10 minutes and started from around $43 for mid-October, while the fastest train needs 32 hours 45 minutes and a 4-berth sleeper, at about $74, costs more than the cheapest flights. The railway earns its place when you break the trip into stops at Ninh Binh, Hue, Da Nang and Nha Trang. A high-speed line is planned, but it is not running and will not be for years.
How we built this guide: we checked Vietnam Railways' official timetables and the SE1 fare table for 14 October 2026, flight, train and bus listings on 12Go and Baolau, and government reports on air traffic, Long Thanh airport and the high-speed railway, all on 2 October 2026. We did not ride these services for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 2 October 2026. Where a site showed dollars, the VND figure is our conversion.
Which way from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City suits you?
Fly if you are going straight there, take the train in stages if you want to see the country, and ride the whole line in one go only if that is the experience you are after. Our Ho Chi Minh City guide covers the arrival end.
| Mode | Time, Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City | Price seen on 2 Oct 2026 | Comfort and safety | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flight | About 2 hours 10 minutes in the air | From $43 (about 1.13 million VND) on 12Go | Quick, frequent, airport transfers at both ends | Almost everyone |
| Train, end to end (SE1) | 32 hours 45 minutes | 4-berth sleeper 1,933,000 to 2,102,000 VND (about $74 to $80); private berth 3,300,000 VND on Baolau | Two nights and a day on board in a berth, toilets on board | Rail fans, a slow scenic trip |
| Train in stages | 2 to 14 hours per leg | Pay per leg | Sleep in hotels, ride by day or night | Seeing Hue, Hoi An and the coast |
| Sleeper bus | About 33 hours or more | From $47 (about 1.23 million VND) on 12Go | Long stretches in a berth, rest stops | Hard to recommend |
How long does each option really take?
Even after airport transfers and check-in, the flight wins by more than a day.
Flights: about 2 hours 10 minutes
On 12Go for 14 October 2026 there were 162 flight listings from $43, operated by Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet, Vietravel Airlines and Sun PhuQuoc Airways. Vietravel's VU775, for example, left Hanoi's Noi Bai airport (HAN) at 09:50 and landed at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat airport (SGN) at 12:00. It is one of the busiest air corridors anywhere: the route was the world's fourth-busiest domestic route in 2025 with more than 11 million seats scheduled, six carriers and an average one-way fare of US$67, according to OAG figures reported by Vietnam Government News.
A change is coming at the southern end. Airports Corporation of Vietnam has proposed starting commercial flights at Long Thanh airport on 1 December 2026, and Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet have registered Long Thanh to Hanoi routes, per VietnamPlus. This is a proposal, so check which airport your ticket names.
The whole train ride: 32 hours 45 minutes at best
Vietnam Railways' timetable for 14 October 2026 lists five through trains over the 1,726 km line:
- SE1: 21:45, arriving 06:30 two days later, 32 hours 45 minutes (fastest)
- SE3: 19:20, arriving 05:30, 34 hours 10 minutes
- SE5: 08:00, arriving 18:20 the next day, 34 hours 20 minutes
- SE7: 06:00, arriving 17:00 the next day, 35 hours
- SE9: 13:00, arriving 03:26, 38 hours 26 minutes
On SE1 a 4-berth sleeper cost 1,933,000 to 2,102,000 VND, a 6-berth sleeper 1,412,000 to 1,817,000 VND, a soft seat about 1,141,000 VND and a 2-berth VIP compartment 4,134,000 VND. Baolau also listed Violette Trains' private 4-berth carriage on SE1 and SE3 at 3,300,000 VND (about $126). Vietnam's tourism authority still describes the trip as a 36-hour ride, but the current timetable is faster. Seat61 notes that none of these trains officially carries the name Reunification Express, though the name is widely used.
Buses: 33 hours or more
12Go listed ten sleeper buses for 14 October 2026, from $47, timed at about 33 hours, from Nuoc Ngam bus station in Hanoi to the Mien Dong Moi bus station in Ho Chi Minh City. One traveler review on the same page described a May 2026 trip that ran about four hours longer than planned. With flights from $43 on the same day, the bus only makes sense for short hops between stops.
Is it worth breaking the trip with stops?
Yes, if you have the time. The SE trains stop at Ninh Binh, Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang and other cities along the way, so you can ride one leg, stay a few nights and catch the next train. Using SE1's stops on 14 October 2026 as a guide:
| Leg | Time on SE1 | Our guides |
|---|---|---|
| Hanoi to Ninh Binh | About 2 hours 15 minutes | Hanoi to Ninh Binh, Ninh Binh |
| Hanoi to Hue | 12 hours 40 minutes (SE3 is 12 hours 30 minutes) | Hanoi to Hue, Hue |
| Hue to Da Nang | About 2 hours 45 minutes | Hue to Hoi An, Da Nang to Hoi An, Hoi An, Da Nang |
| Da Nang to Nha Trang | About 9 hours | Hoi An to Nha Trang, Nha Trang to Da Lat |
| Nha Trang to Saigon | About 7 hours 50 minutes | Ho Chi Minh City to Da Lat, Ho Chi Minh City |

Tip: Seat61 says booking opens about 60 days ahead, sometimes more, for end-to-end journeys, while shorter segments open later. It also notes that outside Hanoi and Saigon some stations sell only journeys starting there, so buy each leg online or before you leave a city.
When will the North-South high-speed railway open?
Not until around 2035, on current plans. The National Assembly approved the investment policy on 30 November 2024 for a 1,541 km line designed for 350 km/h, at a cost of around VND1,713.5 trillion (US$67.6 billion), per Vietnam Government News. Government Resolution 106/NQ-CP of April 2025 requires the conditions for construction to be in place no later than 31 December 2026, with 23 passenger stations and operation targeted for 2035, per VietnamPlus. As of 2 October 2026 it is a project, not a service, and every train on this page runs on the existing line.
Where do trains and flights leave from and arrive?
Trains run between Hanoi Railway Station, 120 Le Duan, and Saigon Railway Station, 1 Nguyen Thong in District 3, per Baolau. SE1 also calls at Bien Hoa and Di An just before Saigon. Flights leave Noi Bai (HAN) and land at Tan Son Nhat (SGN).
Tips for luggage and a long train ride
Bring what you need for two nights on board and keep the rest in the hold or at your hotel.
- Vietnam's tourism authority says luggage transport and freight forwarding are available on the North-South trains, per its transport page, which helps if you are carrying a large suitcase.
- Lower berths cost more than upper ones on the SE1 fare table, 2,067,000 against 1,933,000 VND for a 4-berth compartment.
- Check your baggage allowance before you fly: some Vietravel fares on 12Go showed a 7 kg cabin bag and no checked bag.
Going the other way: Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi
Northbound, the evening sleepers are the fastest. Vietnam Railways' Saigon to Hanoi timetable for 14 October 2026 lists SE2 at 20:35 arriving 05:42 two days later (33 hours 7 minutes) and SE4 at 19:20 arriving 04:36 (33 hours 16 minutes). The same airlines fly the route northbound. For other trips, see our routes from Ho Chi Minh City, our routes from Hanoi and the guide to getting around Vietnam.

Limitations
These are listings seen on 2 October 2026, mostly for 14 October. Airfares change constantly, and the cheapest fares may not include a checked bag. Train fares vary by date and berth, and Vietnam Railways revises its timetable during the year; seat61's June 2026 timetable showed SE1 leaving at 20:50, not 21:45. Check dsvn.vn before you book.
Tet is the hardest time to travel the whole country. Vietnam Railways' Tet 2027 travel period runs from 23 January to 25 February 2027, per Bao Lao Cai, and returning a ticket costs 30% of the fare on even-numbered trains from 29 January to 8 February 2027 and on odd-numbered trains from 9 to 17 February, per Vietnam Railway Transport JSC.
The line also crosses central Vietnam, where the tourism authority notes occasional flooding in Hue from September to November and tropical storms late in the year (Vietnam National Authority of Tourism). In that season, build a spare day into any plan that depends on a train connection, and check the high-speed rail and Long Thanh dates again before relying on them.
