Fly from Hanoi to Da Nang unless the journey itself is the point. The flight takes 1 hour 20 minutes and started from about 700,000 VND for late October, which is barely more than a sleeper bus. Take the overnight train if you want a real bed and the best scenery of the trip: SE3 takes about 15 hours and runs along the coast past Lang Co after breakfast. Sleeper buses are cheapest, at 12 to 13.5 hours, but they are the option we would skip. With a spare day, stop in Hue on the way.

How we built this guide: on 4 October 2026 we checked Vietnam Railways' official timetables and fare tables for Wednesday 21 October 2026, flight, bus and train listings on 12Go for the same date, Seat61's guide to Vietnamese trains, UK travel advice and recent bus safety reporting. We compared everything with our own fly-or-ride research, which priced this route for the same day. We did not ride these services for this guide. Prices are in Vietnamese dong (VND) with US dollar estimates at Vietcombank's selling rate of 26,170 VND per dollar on 4 October 2026.

Which way from Hanoi to Da Nang suits you?

Fly for speed, take the night train for comfort and views, and take the bus only if the lowest fare beats everything else. Our Da Nang guide covers where to stay and what to see once you arrive.

How long does each option really take?

The flight wins by most of a day, even after airport transfers. The train and the bus both take a night, and the train is the more comfortable way to spend it.

Flight: 1 hour 20 minutes, about 4.5 hours door to door

12Go showed 112 flight listings for 21 October 2026, from 699,009 VND. The cheapest direct ones were VietJet's VJ501 at 05:40, arriving 07:00, and VJ521 at 18:45, arriving 20:05, both 699,009 VND with a 7 kg cabin bag and no checked bag. Vietravel Airlines' VU635 left at 06:15 and landed at 07:40 for 823,220 VND (about $31), and Vietnam Airlines' VN177 left at 16:10 and landed at 17:35 for 1,226,255 VND (about $47). Some results were long connections, so filter for direct flights.

Our fly-or-ride research timed this flight at 4 hours 35 minutes door to door: 40 minutes from central Hanoi to Noi Bai, two hours at the airport before departure, the flight, 20 minutes to leave the terminal and 15 minutes into central Da Nang.

Train: 15 to 17 hours

Vietnam Railways' timetable for 21 October 2026 lists six trains over the 791 km between the two stations:

  • SE3: 19:20, arriving 10:28, 15 hours 8 minutes (fastest)
  • SE19: 19:45, arriving 11:35, 15 hours 50 minutes (sleepers only)
  • SE1: 21:45, arriving 13:14, 15 hours 29 minutes
  • SE7: 06:00, arriving 22:15, 16 hours 15 minutes
  • SE5: 08:00, arriving 00:21, 16 hours 21 minutes
  • SE9: 13:00, arriving 05:48, 16 hours 48 minutes

On SE3, a 4-berth sleeper cost 1,147,000 VND for an upper berth and 1,226,000 to 1,261,000 VND for a lower one. A 6-berth sleeper cost 838,000 VND (top tier) to 1,078,000 VND (bottom tier), and a soft seat 575,000 to 654,000 VND. SE1 and SE19 also sell 2-berth VIP compartments, at 2,313,000 and 2,499,000 VND, and private carriages on 12Go ran from about 1,930,722 VND per berth (Violette Trains) to 2,556,000 VND (Laman Express on SE19).

The overnight trains are also the scenic choice. They reach Hue after dawn and then follow the coast south: SE3 leaves Hue at 07:55 and arrives in Da Nang at 10:28. Seat61 calls this stretch, where the line runs along the sea from cliff to cliff, the most magical part of the whole railway. Lang Co, in the photo above, sits on it.

Sleeper bus: 12 to 13.5 hours

12Go listed 174 bus departures for 21 October 2026, from 585,000 VND, with the fastest timed at 11 hours. Examples:

  • Tuan Trinh VIP Luxury 34: 18:00 from Giap Bat bus station, arriving at 27 Tu Mo in Da Nang at 06:00, 12 hours, 585,000 VND.
  • HK Buslines single cabins: 20:00 from 70 Nguyen Huu Huan, 13 hours, 920,159 VND upper and 971,280 VND lower.
  • Viet Lao Bus Cabin 22: 22:00 from 82 Tran Vy, arriving at 10:15, 950,000 VND.

Recent traveler reviews on the same page are mixed, with complaints about cargo stacked in the aisle and late departures on some budget runs. Our comparison of Vietnam's bus companies explains how the main operators differ.

How does this compare with our fly-or-ride research?

The pattern is the same; only the fares have moved a little. Our fly-or-ride research recorded fares for the same date on Vexere and Vietnam Railways on 3 October 2026: VJ501 at 667,061 VND, a Kim Chi 265 limousine sleeper bus at 499,000 VND for 12 hours 30 minutes, and an SE7 soft seat at 551,000 VND. A day later, 12Go showed VJ501 about 5% higher and its cheapest bus at 585,000 VND, while the SE7 seat price was unchanged. Either way, flying saves about 7.5 to 8 hours for roughly 110,000 to 170,000 VND more than the cheapest bus, which is why we put the flight first.

Should you break the trip in Hue?

Yes, if you have a day or two. It turns one long night into a night train and a short morning ride, and Hue is worth the stop on its own; see our Hue guide.

  • Hanoi to Hue: SE3 leaves at 19:20 and reaches Hue at 07:50, 12 hours 30 minutes, with 4-berth sleepers at 1,080,000 to 1,189,000 VND on Vietnam Railways for 21 October 2026. Our Hanoi to Hue guide compares the flight and bus too.
  • Hue to Da Nang by regular train: about 2.5 hours, with soft seats from 78,000 VND (about $3) on SE3, which leaves Hue at 07:55 (Vietnam Railways).
  • Hue to Da Nang by heritage train: HĐ1 leaves Hue at 07:05, stops at Lang Co from 08:28 to 08:38 and reaches Da Nang at 10:10, with seats from 227,000 VND (about $9). HĐ3 leaves at 14:30.

Want another stop? Phong Nha is 3.5 to 5 hours north of Hue by bus; see our Phong Nha guide and Hue to Phong Nha route. To skip the train entirely between Hue and Da Nang, our Hue to Hoi An guide covers buses and cars over or under the Hai Van Pass.

Where do trains, buses and flights leave from and arrive?

Trains run between Hanoi Railway Station and Da Nang Railway Station, flights between Noi Bai and Da Nang International, and buses from company offices.

  • Trains: Hanoi Railway Station on Le Duan street to Da Nang Railway Station. Da Nang is a through stop, so SE3 waits 15 minutes before heading south.
  • Flights: Da Nang's airport is only 10 to 15 minutes from the center by car, per the Grab figures in our Da Nang guide.
  • Buses: from Giap Bat bus station in the south of Hanoi or Old Quarter offices such as 70 Nguyen Huu Huan and 82 Tran Vy, to company offices around Da Nang such as 27 Tu Mo, per 12Go.

Heading on to Hoi An? It is about 29 km and 40 minutes by car; our Da Nang to Hoi An guide compares cars, shuttles and the public bus.

Tips for luggage, sleep and safety

Choose the berth, the bag and the departure time before you choose the mode.

  • On the train, upper berths cost less than lower ones: 1,147,000 against 1,226,000 VND in SE3's 4-berth compartments. Lower berths are easier with children or heavy bags.
  • The cheapest VietJet fares include only a 7 kg cabin bag on 12Go, so add checked baggage when you book if you carry a suitcase.
  • On sleeper buses, keep your passport, phone and cash in your berth. The UK government warns that bus and coach crashes are more likely at night and that vehicles are often poorly maintained. Vietnam's Traffic Police Department counted 199 deaths in long-haul bus crashes between 1 February and 5 July 2026, Tuoi Tre News reported.

Going the other way: Da Nang to Hanoi

The afternoon sleepers are the best choice northbound. Vietnam Railways' Da Nang to Hanoi timetable for 21 October 2026 lists SE4 at 12:28 arriving 04:36 (16 hours 8 minutes) and SE2 at 13:21 arriving 05:42, both with 4-berth sleepers at 932,000 to 1,032,000 VND (about $36 to $39). SE20 leaves at 18:00 and arrives at 11:10, and SE8 leaves at 23:41 and arrives at 16:20. Taking SE4 or SE2 means riding the coast to Hue in the afternoon. For other trips, see our routes from Hanoi and routes from Hoi An and Da Nang.

Limitations

These are listings seen on 4 October 2026 for Wednesday 21 October, and both fares and times move. Airfares change by the hour, and the cheapest ones often exclude checked bags. Vietnam Railways' fares vary by date, berth and how early you buy, and it revises its timetable during the year. Check dsvn.vn before you book. We did not check journey times for private cars, so the car row shows a price only.

Tet is the hardest time to travel this line. Vietnam Railways opened Tet 2027 sales on 5 September 2026 for a holiday travel period from 23 January to 25 February 2027, per Bao Lao Cai, so book early for those weeks.

Weather matters too. Vietnam's tourism authority says tropical storms hit central Vietnam hard from September and warns of occasional flooding around Hue from September to November (Vietnam National Authority of Tourism). Storms can delay trains and flights on this route, so keep a spare day in autumn and buy travel insurance that covers delays.
